Florida immigration council questions deportation numbers
The Trump administration has made it clear that undocumented immigrants in this country will be deported, but sheriffs in central Florida are saying that is not happening as promised. Now the State Immigration Enforcement Council is sounding the alarm. 9 Investigates has been looking into some arrests after finding several cases where illegal immigrants were taken into custody and not detained. In April, when we told you about Paula Hernandez Lazaro was arrested after a crash with a Belle Isle police officer. According to the report, she did not have a license nor legal status in the U.S. and entered the country illegally. She was taken to jail but then released. The State Immigration Enforcement Council says cases like that are happening all over the state because of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Last week, the council passed a resolution asking the governor and other state officials to meet with Trump administration officials. The council would like a federal executive order making it easier for law enforcement to detain and hold all undocumented immigrants and not just those who have committed major crimes. But that would mean having places to hold them until the migrants are deported. The number of migrants in Florida who have been deported since January is unclear. The government has not been forthcoming about the actual number of deportations happening in this state or any other. But even if that did happen, there is no infrastructure right now for the state to hold everyone they pick up. That means right now the state can't crack down as hard as it said it would. FDLE investigating Orange County commissioners' use of Skybox tickets
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating how Orange County commissioners are using Skybox tickets. 9 Investigates obtained an email showing FDLE investigators requesting records from Orange County on all Skybox ticket receipts. FDLE specifically asked for the tickets issued to each county commissioner for each event from December 1, 2018 to the present day, in an email sent to the county on May 14. In a statement to 9 Investigates, the agency said it would not comment on complaints received or active investigations. Our 9 Investigates team has investigated how Commissioner Mayra Uribe gave hundreds of free Skybox tickets to her husband's former charity, All Star Dads. Some of these were tickets to big games like USA v Brazil and big-name acts like Bad Bunny, Travis Scott and Def Leopard. After our investigation, the county changed its Skybox policy. When Uribe announced she was running for Orange County mayor, she also told Channel 9's Ashlyn Webb that she would release information clearing up questions surrounding her use of Skybox tickets. Uribe said she would release that information by May 20. However, she hasn't released any new information so far. Check back with Channel 9 for updates. FAA ranks Florida third in nation for lasers pointed at aircraft
The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting that laser strikes on aircraft nationwide are 'dangerously high,' with Florida ranking third among all states in 2024. The issue is not new, but it seems the incidents continue to give pilots another thing to worry about. Experts say lasers pointed at pilots can temporarily can temporarily impair their sight. Since the agency began monitoring these incidents in 2010, 328 pilots have been injured. In Orange County, pointing lasers at pilots, including a sheriff's helicopter, has led to multiple arrests in the past few years. Orange County has not seen any in the past year, but more than 12,000 other pilots did. While officials say those results are a 3% decrease from 2023, the numbers are still too high. California and Texas have the most incidents with more than 1,400. Florida came in third with 810. The report comes amid the most recent arrest in Florida. Dann Wagner, 61, was charged with felony misuse of a laser lighting device. Investigators say he pointed a green laser at a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office helicopter that was assisting in an assault case on March 27. Anthony Brickhouse teaches aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach and says these incidents can be dangerous. 'I know just to the common eye, it doesn't seem that serious, but it can be a very serious situation. It could cause an accident. It could cause permanent damage to the pilot's eyes. So what a lot of people do, having fun, could end up being criminal at the end of the day,' he said. People who shine lasers at aircraft can face FAA fines up to $11,000 per violation and up to $30,800 for multiple laser incidents. Offenders can also face federal criminal penalties of up to five years in prison for a $250,000 fine, as well as state and local penalties. Do you have a story for WFTV's 9 Investigators?
