Israel Launches 'Targeted' Ground Operations in Lebanon Despite Ceasefire
The Israeli military on Wednesday announced that its forces launched ground operations in parts of southern Lebanon, for the first time in months since a ceasefire agreement took hold between Israel and Hezbollah in November 2024. The military said its 'targeted operations' aimed to dismantle military infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah, without revealing details about when the operations took place. In a statement, the Israeli army's Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, said: 'Following intelligence information and the identification of Hezbollah weapons and terrorist infrastructure in several areas of southern Lebanon, the soldiers launched special, targeted operations to dismantle them and prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing itself in the area.' The statement added that the 9th Brigade operated in the Labbouneh area, near the border, targeting 'a compound containing weapons depots and firing positions.' Meanwhile, the 300th Brigade troops operated in the Jabal Blat area further west, where they struck 'an underground structure used for storing weapons and weapons hidden in thicketed terrain, including a multi-barrel launcher, a heavy machine gun, and dozens of explosive devices.' In November 2024, Hezbollah and Israel signed a ceasefire agreement, ending months of fighting between both sides. Under the ceasefire, brokered by the US and France, both sides had an initial 60-day halt in fighting, during which Hezbollah would end its armed presence in southern Lebanon while Israel would gradually withdraw its troops to the other side of the border. However, Israel has stayed in five locations in Lebanon and has launched dozens of airstrikes and drone attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon, claiming it is targeting Hezbollah sites and operatives, as well as members of the Palestinian movement Hamas, according to AFP. Israel army says launched 'special, targeted operations' in south Lebanon
JERUSALEM: Israel's military said on Wednesday (Jul 9) its troops entered southern Lebanon as part of targeted operations to dismantle infrastructure belonging to the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. "Following intelligence information and the identification of Hezbollah weapons and terrorist infrastructure in several areas of southern Lebanon, the soldiers launched special, targeted operations to dismantle them and prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing itself in the area," an army statement said. The military did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment on whether this was the first time Israeli troops had operated on the ground in Lebanon since a November ceasefire. But the army shared a video captioned "footage from a targeted nighttime operation of the 9th Brigade in southern Lebanon", showing troops walking on the ground. AFP was unable to verify the footage, the time or location it was shot. The army statement said the 9th Brigade was in the Labbouneh area, just over the border. Troops from the 300th Brigade operated in the Jabal Blat area further west, also within sight of the frontier. Despite a November truce with Hezbollah, Israel has kept up its strikes on Lebanon, mainly saying it is targeting the group's sites and operatives but also occasionally members of their Palestinian ally Hamas. The Nov 27 ceasefire sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, including two months of all-out war that left the group severely weakened. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, about 30km from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region.

Israel sends troops deeper into south Lebanon to destroy alleged Hezbollah sites
Israel 's military on Wednesday said its troops pressed further into south Lebanon to carry out ground operations to dismantle alleged Hezbollah infrastructure, before retreating. The Israel military already occupies five points of Lebanese territory along the border, but the latest operations took place outside of those areas. Soldiers from the 300th Brigade found an alleged Hezbollah compound containing weapons and firing positions on the Jabal Blat ridge, which were later destroyed, the Israeli military said. In another operation, members of the 9th Brigade found and confiscated a multi-barrel launcher, a heavy machinegun and dozens of explosive devices hidden in thicketed terrain in the Labbouneh area which they confiscated, it said. 'In the area, an underground structure used for storing weapons was located, and the infrastructure was dismantled in an engineering operation by the brigade's troops,' it added. It was unclear when the operations took place but the announcement was made on Wednesday. In addition to the continued presence of its troops in Lebanon, the Israeli military conducts near-daily air strikes on people and sites allegedly linked to Hezbollah in the south and other areas. It has also struck Beirut several times since the ceasefire agreement was sealed. The Palestinian militant group Hamas, a Hezbollah ally, on Wednesday denied that any of its members were hit in an Israeli strike on the city of Tripoli. Three people were killed and at least 10 wounded in the rare attack in northern Lebanon on Tuesday. Israel claimed it was aimed at a Hamas official. 'There was no targeting of any Hamas official in the assassination that took place in Tripoli,' a Hamas official based in Beirut said. 'The Israeli narrative is completely false regarding the targeting of any of our members,' he told The National. Hezbollah was severely weakened during a year-long war with Israel that ended with a ceasefire in November. Israel's military campaign destroyed much of the group's infrastructure and killed its top leaders and senior commanders. Under the terms of a ceasefire, Hezbollah must pull all military equipment and fighters out of southern Lebanon, and all non-state militant groups must be disarmed across the country. Lebanon is under pressure externally and internally to disarm these groups, including Hezbollah and Palestinian factions that have a presence in the country.

Israel says it launched ‘special, targeted operations' in southern Lebanon
Israeli troops have entered southern Lebanon, the military says, to dismantle infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah, in its latest near-daily violation of its November ceasefire with the Lebanese armed group. The military said in a statement on Wednesday that it had launched 'special, targeted operations' to destroy Hezbollah facilities and prevent the group from 'reestablishing itself in the area'. It claimed the ground incursion had been launched, acting on 'intelligence information and the identification of Hezbollah weapons and terrorist infrastructure in several areas of southern Lebanon'. The army statement said the 9th Brigade was in the Labbouneh area, while troops from the 300th Brigade were operating in the Jabal Blat area further west – both within sight of the border. It shared a video captioned 'footage from a targeted nighttime operation of the 9th Brigade in southern Lebanon', troops were shown walking on the ground. The army has not commented on whether the incursion marks the first time it has operated on the ground in Lebanon since agreeing to the United States-brokered ceasefire in November 2024. Since striking the deal, which sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah – including several months of all-out war – Israel has continued to carry out near-daily strikes across Lebanon, including multiple strikes on the capital, Beirut. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah arms depots and fighters, but numerous civilians have been killed and wounded, and residential buildings were destroyed. Israeli attacks across Lebanon The new operation was announced as Israel intensified its strikes in Lebanon amid Hezbollah's weakened position, the Lebanese army staying on the sidelines and the international community's failure to pressure Israel to abide by the truce. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has repeatedly asked the US and Israel to rein in Israel's attacks on the country. On Sunday, the Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the group remains open to peace, but it will not disarm or back down from confronting Israel until it ends its air raids and withdraws from southern Lebanon. 'We cannot be asked to soften our stance or lay down arms while [Israeli] aggression continues,' Qassem told thousands of supporters gathered in Beirut's southern suburbs for Ashura, an important day in the Shia Muslim calendar. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Israel was required to fully withdraw its troops from the country, but has kept them in five locations it deems strategic to its own interests. Thomas Barrack, an adviser to US President Donald Trump who serves as Washington's ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy for Syria, returned to Beirut on Monday, praising the Lebanese government's response to a US proposal aimed at disarming Hezbollah amid Israel's continued military presence in the country. Since the Gaza war started in October 2023, Israel has also carried out attacks against members of Palestinian factions that maintain a presence in various areas of Lebanon, mostly in camps for Palestinian refugees. On Tuesday, an Israeli strike on a vehicle near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli killed at least three people and injured 13 others, according to Lebanon's Ministry of Health. The military later announced that it had killed Mehran Mustafa Ba'jur in the strike, describing him as one of Hamas's key commanders in Lebanon. It underscored that Israel's assaults are being launched across the country, not just in the south. It was the first time an Israeli assassination had taken place in the area since the truce.

Israeli army says it raided and destroyed Hezbollah sites in south Lebanon
The Israeli army has said its troops conducted several raids on southern Lebanon and destroyed Hezbollah weapon depots and other infrastructure. In a statement, it said that reservists from the 300th Brigade destroyed a Hezbollah compound that included a weapons depot and firing positions. It added that reservists from the 9th Brigade identified a weapons cache in the Labbouneh area. Hezbollah has not yet commented. Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have continued in violation of a November 2024 ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.
