Nelly and Ashanti parent differently

Nelly and Ashanti take very different approaches to parenting. The 50-year-old singer already had Shawn, Chanelle, Sydney and Cornell before he and his wife welcomed son KK into the world 11 months ago, and while he is a more-hands off dad, Ashanti admitted she is "very mama bear-ish" and has a lot of concerns. She told People magazine: "For me, obviously this is my first child. "We have to boil everything and sanitise everything. Everything has to be organic. His sheets are organic, his socks, food-grade silicone, everything. I'm just very, very protective." Nelly said: "I think I understand a little bit more about children. They learn more on their own." The Hot in Herre hitmaker thinks Ashanti, 43, is "motherly overprotective" but he is more "safety overprotective" and insisted it is important for parents not to do everything for their children. He said: "I know if they don't learn certain things by the time they reach a certain age, we're going to pay for that, I promise you. And it's going to backfire on us in a big way." He jokingly added: "Right now I know she's loving it, but that boy turns 17 or 18, she going to be like, 'Why is he acting like this?' And I'm going to ask [Ashanti's mom and manager, Tina Douglas] for that video of him being three. And I'm going to say, 'You see this right here when he used to...'" But despite their different approaches to parenting, Nelly thinks Ashanti is a "great" mom to their son. He said: "I have no complaints. I wish all mothers could see the way that she get down a little bit. You wish every kid had that type of love." In their reality series, Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, Nelly told of how his family struggled financially and he wants to give his son a better life. He said: "I'm just trying to be a better father than I had. And don't get it twisted, I love my father, but I've been through a lot." But he noted that, with Tina, Ashanti has "some tough shoes to fill". His wife laughed: "Yeah, Momager is a whole different beast. I'm very grateful."

Nelly asks Ashanti if she ‘really be up at night' with their baby

Nelly isn't sugar coating his role as a father to the child he shares with fellow performer Ashanti. In a clip from their reality show on Peacock, 'Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together,' the 'Air Force Ones' rapper admitted that he doesn't have any plans of caring for their child until he's old enough to walk and talk. While discussing Nelly going on tour and leaving the house for a 'long time,' Ashanti admitted she was a little sad that he was leaving despite being 'proud' of him. 'I think it will be fine,' Nelly told Ashanti, who noted that it was going to be 'a lot' with a baby at home. 'Well, listen, it's all you. I ain't gonna even lie. You know, I ain't got nothing for him,' Nelly told Ashanti as they ate a meal together. 'Absolutely not,' she said in agreement. The clip then flashed back to a conversation Nelly was having with his friends, telling them that until their son can express his needs he's hands off. 'I'm trying to understand, how is it that you sleep through when he starts crying,' Ashanti asked Nelly. 'Do y'all really be up at night? I heard about it,' Nelly responded as Ashanti rolled her eyes. In addition to his 11-month-old son, KK, he shares with Ashanti, Nelly is also a father to 30-year-old Chanelle and 26-year-old Cornell, who he shares with his ex-partner Channetta Valentine. Nelly is also an adoptive father to his late sister's children, Shawn and Sydney, after his sister died of leukemia in 2005. In an interview with The Shade Room, Nelly admitted that he's 'pretty much on cruise control with parenting' after starting over at 50. Now, Nelly says he lives vicariously through Ashanti, 44, as he watches her go through her first experience as a parent. 'I know she's always wanted kids, and I know when you're in this business, sometimes timing cannot work, and some artists have went their whole lives through this business and never get a chance to see that, or never get a chance to experience that,' Nelly continued. 'So watching her go through it, I'm, in a sense, living vicariously through her, but letting her know, she knows I'm here, she knows she has a support, she knows whatever she needs I provide, and that includes nannies.' In the comments, fans debated Nelly's parenting style. 'Sometimes it's better to just stay private! I liked the image they painted for us before the show,' one commenter wrote. 'Sad for her? The man said he'll provide all the nannies she needs to help. That's a fair balance. We mad at men who won't help and can't provide a nanny,' another commenter countered. Nelly and Ashanti previously dated for years at the height of their respective music careers in the early 2000s, the 'Today' show reported. They later reconnected in 2021 before marrying in 2023. During a conversation with Today, Nelly also opened up about how he felt having a fifth child at the age of 50, saying that he was open with Ashanti in the beginning. 'I said, 'Now listen, I'm here, but chasing toddlers at 50,'' he told the 'Today' co-hosts. 'I said, 'As many as she wants, but as many nannies as we can afford.'

Ashanti and Nelly Almost Rekindled Their Relationship About 10 Years Ago. Why It Didn't Work Out (Exclusive)

Peacock's new reality show, Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, is out now The series reveals Nelly and Ashanti nearly rekindled their relationship about a decade ago "I don't think the timing was great back then," Ashanti tells PEOPLETiming is everything for Nelly and Ashanti. The married couple stars in Peacock's new reality series Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, which comes over 20 years after they started dating for the first time in 2003. Since then, the relationship has endured ups and downs. They broke up, spent years apart, reunited in September 2023 and quietly married in December of the same year. What fans didn't know is around a decade ago, between the first and second acts of their romance, as the series reveals, they nearly rekindled. Plus, Nelly almost proposed. "There was just so much going on in our careers, and we didn't live in the same state," recalls Ashanti. "It wasn't meant to happen then. We had a lot of kinks to work out." "I don't think the timing was great back then," adds the "Foolish" singer, explaining they both had some "growing and learning" to do before getting back together. As for why their relationship works today, Nelly explains it's not about being "100% sure" it'll be successful but rather "100% willing to take the chance" on love. "It's all a leap of faith. It's all about making yourself vulnerable in certain situations. And we're in this business where we are guarded towards certain things at certain times," says the "Hot in Herre" rapper, a father of five who shares 11-month-old son KK with Ashanti. "So it is hard to let yourself be put into a situation to where it's out of your control and you have to compromise." Nelly continues, "Compromise is tough when you're leading businesses. She's leading the Ashanti business, I'm leading the Nelly business." "Relationships, that s--- sometimes gets pushed to the side," he declares. They work hard to make sure that doesn't happen. "Communication is extremely important, especially with us traveling," says Ashanti. "Sometimes, he's on the other side of the world. And sometimes, I'm on the other side of the world." Despite the awkward moments, both stars are open to the idea of having more children in the future. Ashanti said: "I think we both wanna kinda grow a family. it's funny, when I was younger I was like, 'I want six kids! Six!' " In the meantime, the loved up couple are sharing their lives on screen in new reality show Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together. Nelly, 50, revealed he let his wife - whom he secretly married after their reunion - decide whether or not their son should feature on the programme. He explained: "When it came to KK, that was definitely her decision, her being a new mother and the anxiety of putting it out there, showing your first child to the world. "Hopefully we can inspire [people]!" Meanwhile, Ashanti wants fans to know that they're not sugarcoating or exaggerating their life for the sake of the show. She added: "I hope the fans get that we are just authentically, organically living our lives. It's not, like, 'for the cameras!' "These are our lives, we have careers, we're newly married, we have our first child together, he already has kids!"
