NWDA meet on June 24 on Godavari-Cauvery interlinking project

The National Water Development Agency will hold the sixth consultation meeting here on June 24 to arrive at consensus for implementation of the Godavari (Inchampalli)-Cauvery (Grand Anicut) Link Project. The meeting, called by the task force on interlinking of rivers, would be chaired by the Chairman of Central Water Commission (CWC), who is also the chairman of the task force on interlinking of rivers. It is expected to discuss several issues raised by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on the Godavari-Cauvery link project. While A.P. has expressed its willingness to take part in the project, Telangana has raised several objections. Telangana has been arguing that it could be taken up only after adjudication of Krishna water shares by the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal and has also strongly objected to the proposal to use Nagarjunasagar as the balancing reservoir stating that such a move would harm its interests in the long run. Further, Telangana has been demanding clearances by the Centre to all its ongoing and contemplated projects based on the Godavari water and also an assurance from the Centre that the interlinking project would not harm its interests before taking up the Godavari-Cauvery link. Telangana has reservations on the utilisation of 148 tmc ft of un-utilised water share of Chhattisgarh in Godavari since that State too could have future needs and also against taking up the interlinking from Inchampalli, Sammakkasagar or Indravathi river from Telangana, stating it would make flood control very difficult. In case water is diverted from Telangana the State should be given 51% share in the water drawn for the interlinking project. On the other hand, A.P. has been suggesting that the Centre take up the interlinking from Polavaram and include Somasila reservoir too in the interlinking project. It also suggested construction of balancing reservoir to store 300 tmc ft of water at Bollapalli in the upstream of Polavaram, now planned as the balancing reservoir for the Polavaram (Godavari)-Banakacherla (Krishna) Link Project for which the State has recently secured assurance from the Centre to fund it. Meanwhile, the Polavaram Project Authority has requested the CWC to take up drainage congestion study due to water storage at full reservoir level in Polavaram project in six major streams in Telangana — Turubakavagu, Yetapakavagu, Edullavagu, Peddavagu, Domalavagu, Kinnerasani and another local stream — and that it (PPA) would bear the costs associated with the survey. A.P. has plans to complete Polavaram by 2027.

New U.S. student visa norms unjust, seek central intervention, CPI(M) urges Naidu

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) wrote a letter to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu requesting him to exert pressure on the central government and ensure that the new rules with regard to student visas imposed by the U.S. government were halted. In the letter dated Thursday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said that the U.S. government was scrutinising the social media accounts of the students who have applied for visas. Every year, around 3,00,000 students from India travel to the United States for higher education. A significant number of these are from Andhra Pradesh. ''Now, due to a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump, many students are being denied visas. They are being allowed only after a thorough inspection of their social media accounts. This year, approximately 38% of applicants were rejected. As a result, students and their parents are in great distress,'' he said. In Indian universities, students hold diverse opinions and are free to express those views on social media. ''Expecting students in India not to post any views about the U.S. is undemocratic. Denying student visas on such grounds is unjust. This goes against principles of international natural justice and established protocols. Our government does not impose such restrictions on visitors from the United States,' he said. Students and their families were taking loans to apply for these visas and were anxiously awaiting approvals. Even the State government supports foreign education. ''Under these circumstances, scrutinising social media posts and granting visas based on them is discriminatory towards India. This biased approach causes serious harm and injustice to the students. Therefore, I urge you to intervene and take steps through the central government to get these new U.S. visa rules revoked,' he said. At the same time, the A.P. government could take initiatives to develop high quality higher education in public sector of the country that could compete with the U.S., he added.

Plans on the anvil to achieve $2.40 trillion GSDP by 2047: Naidu

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has asserted that Andhra Pradesh has a favourable atmosphere for investments and for overall development of the State, and the government is focussed on its Swarnandhra objectives, which are in alignment with the Viksit Bharat vision. Addressing the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi on Saturday (May 24, 2025), Mr. Naidu highlighted the availability of abundant natural resources, other geographical advantages, and the urban-rural synergy model of development being followed by the government with due focus on adoption of advanced technologies. He said plans were on the anvil to achieve the targeted $2.40 trillion Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by 2047 through new policies and data-centric planning and governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi exhorted the Chief Ministers of other States to replicate some of the development plans made out by the A.P. government under Mr. Naidu's leadership. Mr. Naidu suggested that a national-level committee be formed to use technologies in governance on a much wider scale. He had a discussion with Mr. Modi on issues like governance, new policies and investment opportunities in various sectors. Yoga Day On the International Yoga Day scheduled to be observed on June 21, Mr. Naidu said the government was making arrangements to organize it in a grand manner in Visakhapatnam, in which Mr. Modi would be taking part, and that awareness on the benefits of yoga were being spread by conducting Yoga Month from May 21 to June 21. Referring to the Swarnandhra vision, he said it offered a scalable, inclusive model for national development and rooted in family-centric governance, innovation, digital infrastructure and sustainability. Reaffirming the State's commitment to lead by example in driving national transformation through strong, coordinated leadership at both the State and the Union levels, he praised India's remarkable rise over the past decade under the visionary leadership of Mr. Modi, highlighting India's rise from the world's 10th to 4th largest economy, on track to become the 3rd largest by 2047. 'Reforms like Digital India, GST, Startup India, PM Gati Shakti, and Jal Jeevan Mission have redefined India's development landscape,' Mr. Naidu asserted. He insisted that the State was committed to contributing significantly to the national aspiration of Viksit Bharat — a $30 trillion economy marked by high- quality infrastructure, equitable development and empowered citizens. Under the Swarnandhra vision, the State targeted to achieve Zero Poverty by 2029 through the innovative P4 model, which unites government, private sector, and citizens' efforts to support vulnerable families and promote economic upliftment, he siad.

Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar and his Telangana counterpart Uttam Kumar Reddy discussed key issues relating to both the States in Hyderabad on Friday (May 23, 2025). Later, addressing the media, Mr. Manohar said there should be good relations between the two States. 'Assets' transfer is necessary. Andhra Pradesh is fully handing over the A.P. Civil Supplies building, which spans 25,000 square feet, to Telangana. Andhra Pradesh will adopt technological advancements happening in Telangana,' he said. Also read: TG and A.P. resolve to strengthen inter-state cooperation in civil supplies sector 'We are exporting rice from Kakinada to the Philippines, and we discussed the facilities required for that. Our aim is to benefit the farmers of both the States. The intention is to make high-quality rice available to consumers at an affordable price. In Andhra Pradesh, from June 12, fine rice will be supplied as part of the midday meal scheme in schools,' he said. Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy recalled that it was under Mr. Manohar's leadership that the Telangana Bill had been passed in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He said the credit for it should go to Mr. Manohar, who was the Legislative Assembly Speaker then. Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said, 'We discussed about the civil supplies policies of both States and the technology being used. We also spoke about curbing illegal transportation of grain between the States. There is also a discussion on asset transfers. During bifurcation, half of the Civil Supplies building went to Andhra Pradesh. From June 1, the remaining portion will be handed over to Telangana. From now on, the food and allied departments will operate from this office. There are 16 flats in Shanti Shikhar Apartments, and they are also being allotted to Telangana.'

BRS flays Centre's decision to fund A.P.'s Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project

HYDERABAD The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has criticised the Centre's decision to fund 50% of funds required for the execution of Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project to divert Godavari water to the Krishna and Penna Basins without mandatory clearances and to allow Andhra Pradesh to mobilise the remaining 50% funds by borrowing loans beyond Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act limits. The Centre's move was nothing but allowing A.P. to undertake illegal water diversion in violation of Telangana's riparian rights, senior leader of the BRS T. Harish Rao said, alleging that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and his Cabinet colleagues were maintaining silence. He requested the Chief Minister to oppose A.P.'s illegal project in every possible way. Mr. Rao reminded the Centre, A.P. and Telangana governments that as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act provisions, it was mandatory to get clearance from the river management boards established under the Act for taking up new projects in the Krishna or Godavari Basins. 'The Centre was unfortunately encouraging the violators by providing funds', Mr. Harish Rao said in a statement. The BJP-led government was doing grave injustice to Telangana, he said and questioned the silence of Congress and BJP leaders of Telangana, including their 16 Parliament members, and two Union Ministers from the State. Step-motherly treatment He stated that the Centre had cut Telangana's borrowing limit under FRBM in lieu of the loans taken from the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) for executing the Kaleshwaram Project. However, A.P. is being allowed to borrow loans for the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project beyond the FRBM limits, indicating the Centre's step-motherly treatment to Telangana. He recollected that it was the Congress that had allowed injustice to Telangana when the rulers of combined A.P. diverted Krishna water illegally by expanding Pothireddypadu Head Regulator to draw water from Srisailam to meet the needs in the non-basin areas at the cost of in-basin areas of Telangana. It was the Congress again now which was allowing illegal diversion of Godavari water.
