Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore hosts state-level para-table tennis

The Ganga Spine Injury Rehabilitation Centre, a unit of Ganga Hospital, hosted Tamil Nadu's first state-level Para table tennis ranking championship in Coimbatore on August 10. The event witnessed the participation of more than 80 para athletes from across the State. A. Saravana Sundar, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, felicitated the winners. S. Rajasekaran, Chairman of Ganga Hospital and Managing Trustee of the Ganga Spine Injury Foundation, said the journey began when a rehabilitated spinal cord injury survivor expressed interest in table tennis. The foundation has significantly expanded itself by including other sports like wheelchair racing, field athletics, and basketball. This championship marked a significant achievement for the foundation which offers support to para athletes, from coaching to finance. Many athletes supported by the foundation have achieved milestones including representing India at the Asian Games and securing selection for Common Wealth games apart from winning several national medals.

Registration opens for Annual Coimbatore Marathon

Registration opened for the 13th Annual Coimbatore Marathon on July 27. The marathon will take place on December 21, 2025 and will see over 23,000 walkers and runners participate in support of cancer awareness. Participants can race in any of four categories: half marathon, 10km run, 5km timed run or 5km walk. The registration was launched with Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavarm, Commissioner of Police A. Saravana Sundar and Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabakaran signing up for the race. Thus far, the Coimbatore Marathon has raised over ₹6.14 crore for the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, which has been supporting cancer survivors and raising awareness. The marathon is organised by CCF in collaboration with Coimbatore Runners, a non-profit organisation. This year's marathon has Walkaroo as title partner and will be powered by ELGi Equipments. Registration fees are as follows: half marathon ₹1,300; 10km ₹1,100; 5km timed run ₹850 and 5km walk ₹650.

Coimbatore City Police, Young Indians conduct awareness programme on drugs

Coimbatore City Police and Young Indians (CII) joined hands to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 with an event at Thomas Park, Race Course. A. Saravana Sundar IPS, City Police Commissioner, took part. More than 200 students from various colleges across the city came together to stand united against substance abuse and spread the message of drug-free life. Caroline Rajan, Co-Chair, Yi Health, said 'Namakku Vendam' was one of the earnest efforts to prevent society from the harms of drugs. Saumya Gayathri, Chair, Yi-Yuva, said Yi in collaboration with Yuva - a college students' network, conducted 13 events, reaching out to nearly 8,000 students. Neil Kikani, Chair- Yi Coimbatore, spoke about the importance of safeguarding our neighbourhood, friends and the city from drug abuse. Mr. Saravana Sundar that drug abuse could hinder the productivity of youth, the strength of labour and the growth of our nation. The Commissioner administered an International Day Against Drug Abuse pledge to the participants. Students from Dr. NGP Arts and Science College, KPR College of Arts, Science and Research, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science performed on the theme 'Namaku Vendam – Say No to Drugs'.

Freedom run to create awareness on cyber crime against women in Coimbatore on August 10

We Wonder Women and Prompt Infotech, in association with Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, will jointly present the 5th edition of 'Freedom run: cyber crime against women' on August 10. The initiative is aimed at raising awareness on violence against women, particularly cybercrime, and to promote safety and empowerment of women in all aspects of their lives. The event features a 10-km awareness run, along with a 5-km run and a 5-km walk, all beginning and ending at V.O.C. Park in the city from 5.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, who launched the official poster of the Freedom Run, said that participation in the run not only promotes physical health, but also sends a strong message that cybercrime against women will not be tolerated. N. Sundaravadivelu, District Governor of Rotary Coimbatore, launched the official Freedom Run T-shirt, while Kavitha Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Governor of Rotary Coimbatore, unveiled the Freedom Run medal. Sankarraj Subramanian, Cybercrime Investigator and founder and CEO of Prompt Infotech, invited corporates, students, and the general public to support this cause and work together to empower women in their fight for safety and equal rights. Students, police and armed forces mark Yoga Day in Coimbatore

International Yoga Day saw large-scale participation in Coimbatore on Friday, with events held across educational institutions and public venues. At the Isha Yoga Centre, over 200 personnel from the Rapid Action Force in Vellalore and the 35th and 43rd regiments from Madukkarai and Sulur took part in yoga training. The event was part of more than 2,500 free sessions conducted by Isha Foundation across the country, reaching over 10,000 security personnel and members of the public. At the Police Recruits School campus in the city, more than 100 police personnel participated in a 40-minute yoga session led by City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, organised by the Coimbatore City Police. Educational institutions also observed the day. At Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, students demonstrated yoga postures and performed a themed dance. At Nirmala College for Women, 1,000 incoming students attended a session led by a certified trainer, while T.V. Sekharan Memorial School hosted yoga practitioners who guided students through daily practices. Former Minister S.P. Velumani joined students at Brindavan Vidyalaya in Madukkarai for a yoga session and spoke about its role in improving mental calm and physical health. VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science collaborated with Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Thondamuthur, for a joint programme. S. Nirmala Devi, SKY Professor from The World Community Service Center, led a session encouraging students to take up yoga as a daily routine.
