Two-wheeler rally taken out in Coimbatore to commemorate World No Tobacco Day

A two-wheeler rally involving over 200 participants was held in Coimbatore on Saturday to raise awareness about the health risks of tobacco use. The event was organised by the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, District Tobacco Control Cell, and the bikers community, with support from CSW Foundation and Akshayam Charitable Trust, as part of World No Tobacco Day observance. The rally was flagged off by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, and Deputy Director of Health Services P. Balusamy. The rally began at the District Collector's bungalow and ended at the District Health Office in the city. Participants took part in a pledge and signature campaign to endorse a tobacco-free lifestyle. Speaking to the reporters, the Collector emphasised the importance of raising public awareness regarding the health hazards associated with tobacco use. On illegal tobacco sales near educational institutions, the Collector said joint inspections by food safety officials, police, and local body officials had resulted in the seizure of numerous tobacco products across the district, and these efforts would be further intensified. A State-wide Yellow Line Campaign to keep tobacco away from the vicinity of educational institutions was launched during the event. All institutions are required to mark a 100-yard (300 feet) tobacco-free zone with a thick yellow line, with the support of local bodies and Parents Teachers Associations (educational institutions concerned), within 30 days from May 31. They should ensure that there is no tobacco sale within the yellow line. The initiative supports enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. Separately, PSG Hospitals, in association with Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, Cancer Care India, and the National Cadet Corps, observed World No Tobacco Day with a programme focused on exposing industry tactics and encouraging tobacco cessation.

Use of air horns continues unabated in Coimbatore

After a lull, use of high decibel air horns has become rampant among private buses and goods carriers in Coimbatore. Though the police claim that periodic vehicle checks are conducted to curb their use, many private buses, especially omni buses, are found to be using them. The private bus operators allege that the State-run buses are also involved in violations. A police officer said private bus operators were occasionally reminded to not use air horns, which caused noise pollution and distraction to other motorists. The permitted noise range for horns was between 93 decibel and 112 decibel as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, the official said. Lack of decibel meters, a device required to check noise level of horns, was another hurdle for the police and Transport Department. Decibel meter, which is used by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is held at a distance of 7.5 metres from the horn, at a height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres, to check the noise level. Consumer rights activist K. Kathirmathiyon said consumer organisations raised the issue of air horns on city roads with the Transport Department officials at a meeting with Regional Transport Officers (RTO) held in March. 'Vehicle owners should be booked or fined if they are found using air horns, instead of merely seizing them. As no such action is being taken, there is no deterrent effect. After the issue was highlighted, the Department agreed to conduct joint drives with TNPCB,' he said. City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said the police would carry out surprise vehicle checks to curb use of air horns.

Coimbatore City Police issues externment orders against 29 persons

The Coimbatore City Police have issued externment orders against 29 history-sheeters, directing them to stay away from the city for a period of six months. According to the police, people were often fearful of filing police complaints due to the presence of the said history-sheeters in the city. Additionally, others hesitated to appear in court as witnesses in cases where the history-sheeters have been involved. Based on instructions from Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, show-cause notices were served on 29 history-sheeters under Section 51-A (power to direct removal of persons from city in special cases) of the Madras City Police Act, 1888. They appeared before Deputy Commissioners of Police R. Uthayakumar and N. Devanathan and submitted their explanations. The police further conducted direct and discreet inquiries on the 29 persons and found out that they had been involved in criminal activities. The Commissioner issued externment orders against them on April 21.
