Vape ban Perak to make decision after thorough study

IPOH: The Perak government is currently conducting a comprehensive review on the need to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes) in the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the matter was recently raised in the State Executive Council (MMK) meeting, but there are issues that need to be examined in greater depth. He said the matter has also been entrusted to State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan for further scrutiny. "I have spoken to him (Sivanesan) about the issue, as it requires an in-depth study from a health perspective, but there are also several other aspects that must be considered. "In addition, we have also received a request from the vape traders' association for a meeting, so there are matters we need to review before making any decision," he said at a press conference after launching the Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and Perak Smart Cities Blueprint 2040 here today. Also present were State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching and State Communication, Multimedia and NGOs Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi. Saarani said the study is expected to be presented at the upcoming MMK meeting and will cover all aspects, including health and the impact on vape traders and other stakeholders. He had previously said that any decision on banning vape sales was expected to be made at the MMK meeting on May 28. – Bernama

Watchmaker blacklisted after smashing MPTI glass doors

TELUK INTAN: A watchmaker in a mall outlet in Jalan Bandar here, who ran amok by breaking the glass door entrance of the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) building last week, has been blacklisted from further rental. Perak executive councillor of Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration A. Sivanesan said MPTI has given the 63-year-old man a month's notice to vacate his shop. 'His action (going on a rampage and damaging public property at the MPTI building) is unacceptable and we (the state) cannot tolerate the matter. He will be blacklisted by MPTI and will not be able to rent any stall or shop here in future. 'Also, he has not paid rent for two months, which is only RM150 per month. This serves as a lesson for him and other tenants, not to take the law into their own hands,' he said. Sivanesan made these remarks during a visit to the Chithirai Pournami festival at the Sri Subramaniam Temple which was attended by some 20,000 Hindu devotees on Jalan Bandar here today. On Thursday, Hilir Perak police chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the watchmaker arrived at the MPTI building on a motorcycle and proceeded to smash both of the building's main glass doors with a sledgehammer. Bakri stated that in his testimony, the man defended his misdemeanour due to dissatisfaction with MPTI's decision to set up tents in front of his shop during the annual Chitra (or Chithirai) Pournami festival, as they obstructed customers' view of his watch repair shop. Earlier, a one-minute 30-second viral video showed a man astride a motorcycle descending on the MPTI building to smash the glass doors in a rage.

Tomyam fried rice blamed for food poisoning of 43 students

TELUK INTAN: Tomyam fried rice is suspected to be the cause of a food poisoning incident involving 43 students from Sekolah Menengah San Min on Jalan Sungai Nibong here last month. Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said the infection source was believed to be food prepared by the school canteen on April 21. He said the food poisoning case was first detected when two students showed symptoms on April 22, followed by an official notification to the Hilir Perak District Health Office (PKD) two days later. "All affected students, aged between 13 and 18, experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. They received outpatient treatment and are in stable condition. "Two clinical samples tested positive for norovirus and sapovirus infections. The PKD is conducting further investigations to determine the exact source of the infections and any contributing factors," he told a press conference after visiting the school today. Sivanesan said the PKD's hygiene inspection of the school's canteen found the cleanliness level unsatisfactory. He said a four-day closure order was issued under Section 18(1)(f) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 [Act 342], effective immediately. "The canteen operator has taken corrective actions as instructed, and after a re-evaluation, the premises were allowed to resume operations," he said. Sivanesan said the Perak Health Department would continue to monitor the situation and work with all relevant parties to ensure that students' health and food safety were consistently safeguarded. –Bernama
