Tomyam fried rice cause of 43 students food poisoning

TELUK INTAN: Tomyam fried rice is suspected to be the cause of a food poisoning incident involving 43 students from Sekolah Menengah San Min on Jalan Sungai Nibong here last month.
Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman, A. Sivanesan, said the infection source is believed to be food prepared by the school canteen on April 21.
He said the food poisoning case was first detected when two students showed symptoms on April 22, followed by an official notification to the Hilir Perak District Health Office (PKD) two days later.
'All affected students, aged between 13 and 18, experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. They received outpatient treatment and are in stable condition.
'Two clinical samples tested positive for norovirus and sapovirus infections. The PKD is conducting further investigations to determine the exact source of the infections and any contributing factors,' he told a press conference after visiting the school today.
Sivanesan said the PKD's hygiene inspection of the school's canteen found the cleanliness level unsatisfactory.
He said a four-day closure order was issued under Section 18(1)(f) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 [Act 342], effective immediately.
'The canteen operator has taken corrective actions as instructed, and after a re-evaluation, the premises were allowed to resume operations,' he said.
Sivanesan said the Perak Health Department will continue to monitor the situation and work with all relevant parties to ensure that students' health and food safety are consistently safeguarded.

17 medical devices that failed tests not safe to be uses, says MDA

PUTRAJAYA: The Medical Device Authority (MDA) confirms that the 17 types of medical devices sold online, which previously failed safety tests, are now safe for use by the public. MDA chief executive Dr Muralitharan Paramasua said that based on a review of the investigation report and re-testing submitted, it has found that all the medical devices now meet the standards and are safe and effective for continued use by the public. The affected devices are Dynmed brand oxygen concentrators; Angel Biss (SH01) and Carer; blood pressure monitors (BPLife, Novoplus, Yuwell and Ouson+); glucose meters (Roche, Sinocare and Yasee); thermometers (BioCare, Scaneo dan Ouson+) as well as surgical and examination gloves (Gammex, Shirudo, Puritex and Infinity Latex). Dr Muralitharan said that thorough investigations and corrective actions had been carried out by all the companies following the Feb 15 MDA report regarding the devices' failure to comply with standards. "All the establishments involved showed a high commitment to undergoing full investigations. This is in line with the post-market responsibilities outlined in the Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737)," he said in a statement Tuesday (June 3). Dr Muralitharan said comprehensive actions, such as the improvements in quality control systems, compliance with regulation guidelines as well as increased transparency in managing safety and efficacy issues of the devices had helped restore public confidence. He also advised the public to be more cautious when purchasing medical devices online. "The public needs to ensure the medical devices bought are registered with the MDA and sold by licensed establishments," he said. Vape device interim licence issued by Miti

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has clarified that a recent interim licence for manufacturing nicotine-based vape devices was issued by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti). The licence was granted through the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) under the Industrial Coordination Act 1975 and local licensing laws. This comes after media reports said a Nasdaq-listed company from the United States had received Malaysia's first federal licence to produce nicotine products. The Health Ministry explained that while Miti issues manufacturing licences, the production, import, and sale of nicotine liquids are regulated under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852). Section 2 of the Act defines nicotine liquids—including substances like nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerol, and triethylene glycol—as smoking products. These products can be sold in Malaysia, but they are strictly regulated. The ministry said it is responsible for monitoring the contents and emissions of these products to protect public health. "The regulation of these smoking products also involves other government agencies, including an import control by the Customs Department through restrictions covering raw materials and finished goods under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2008. "Among others, device safety standard testing by Sirim, enforced under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking) of Electronic Cigarette Devices (Vape Device) Order 2022 under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, under the purview of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry," the statement read. The Health Ministry stressed that all decisions on vape liquid production and sales are made jointly by relevant authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to strong enforcement and public health safety.
