CITU Launches Protest Demanding Pending Salaries for Hostel Worker
Gadwal: In a strong show of support for long-neglected hostel workers, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest rally on Tuesday demanding immediate disbursement of pending wages. The rally began at the old Collector's office and culminated in a dharna (sit-in protest) in front of the District Collectorate. District Secretaries A. Venkataswamy and V.V. Narasimha declared that the fight will continue until every worker receives their rightful wages. The protest highlighted the financial distress faced by workers due to the non-payment of salaries for 6 to 7 months. Seven Months Without Pay: Workers in Crisis According to the CITU leaders, SC hostel workers have not received their salaries for seven months, and BC hostel workers have gone unpaid for six months. They criticized the government for ignoring essential service providers, comparing hostel workers' duties to those in emergency services. 'How are workers' families supposed to survive without salaries for months?' questioned the leaders during the protest. Demand for Direct Payment Through Corporations CITU demanded that the government disburse wages directly through the SC and BC Welfare Corporations, bypassing third-party agencies, to ensure timely and transparent payment. They also condemned district welfare officials, accusing them of negligence and irresponsibility, which has led to failures in depositing PF (Provident Fund) and ESI (Employee State Insurance) contributions into workers' accounts. Allegations of Arbitrary Appointments and Exploitation Leaders alleged that favoritism and irregular appointments have become rampant. Workers are being shuffled arbitrarily between pre-matric and post-matric hostels, often at the whims of local officials. In the BC college hostel, workers have reportedly not shown up for four months, and the workload is falling entirely on just two individuals. This scenario is repeating across many hostels in the district, resulting in severe overwork and exploitation. They also accused past and current officials of making unauthorized appointments without issuing proper notifications, denying long-serving workers official recognition and security. Key Demands Presented to Authorities The protest concluded with the submission of a petition to Additional Collector Lakshmi Narayana, listing several key demands: Immediate release of pending wages Issuance of appointment letters and job charts specifying each worker's role Proper PF and ESI deposits into worker accounts Regularization and recognition of long-time workers End to arbitrary postings and political favoritism in hostel appointments Warning of Larger Agitation CITU warned that if the government fails to address these concerns promptly, the union will launch a long-term agitation across the district and state. Protest Led by Worker and Union Leaders The protest saw participation from: Ranjith Kumar and Anand Raju (District President & Secretary, Hostel Workers' Union), Upper Narasimha (CITU District Vice President), Jayakar (District Treasurer, Hostel Workers' Union) Shashikala, Lakshmi (Vice Presidents) Pravalika, Chintarevula (Assistant Secretaries) Gopal, Haimavati, Ramakrishna, Anji, Sridevi, Padma, and several other workers.

CPM Demands Immediate Compensation for Farmers Devastated by Fire in Pragaturu Village
Gadwal: In a strong appeal to district authorities, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has demanded immediate financial assistance and support for farmers who suffered severe losses in a fire accident in Pragaturu village, Undavalli Mandal. Speaking on behalf of the affected farmers, CPM District Secretary A. Venkataswamy submitted a petition to the District Collector at the district headquarters on Saturday, seeking government intervention and compensation. According to the petition, the tragic incident occurred around midnight on May 1st, when a massive fire broke out in Pragaturu village. The blaze completely destroyed 18 haystacks belonging to 12 farmers. The destroyed fodder included valuable animal feed brought in from distant locations at significant cost, such as jowar stalks, pigeon pea husks, chickpea husks, black gram husks, green gram husks, and millet stalks. In addition to the fodder loss, the fire also consumed essential agricultural equipment, including cattle sheds, oil engines, and borewell pumps, leaving the farmers devastated and without critical farming infrastructure. The total estimated loss from the incident is pegged at around Rs. 25 lakhs. Highlighting the hardships faced by the farmers, A. Venkataswamy noted that the incident has come at a particularly difficult time. With summer in full swing and scarcity of fodder already being a major concern, the destruction of stored feed has pushed the farmers into a crisis. Many are now forced to travel long distances in search of fodder to sustain their livestock, causing both emotional and financial distress. The CPM leader called for a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire and urged the government to take swift action to compensate the affected farmers. He also demanded immediate distribution of fodder from government reserves to alleviate the ongoing crisis. Among those who participated in the representation were CPM district committee members Singaraju Maddileti, Upperu Narasimha, Advocate Lakshman, Pragaturu branch secretary Madhu, and local members Chennarayudu, Ranganna, Hussain, and Danayya, along with the affected farmers.

Only a Workers' State Can Solve Labor Issues," Says CPM on May Day in Jogulamba Gadwal
Gadwal: On the occasion of International Workers' Day (May Day), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] District Secretary A. Venkataswamy emphasized that only the establishment of a workers' state can resolve the growing challenges faced by the working class in India. He hoisted the CPM flag at the party's district office in Gadwal on Thursday and addressed party members and workers. Venkataswamy stated that the country is undergoing an unprecedented economic, political, and social crisis. He attributed the worsening conditions to the policies being driven by capitalist interests, which prioritize corporate profits over people's welfare. He strongly criticized the government's ongoing support for corporate entities by amending laws in their favor, allowing unchecked corruption, and undermining public institutions. He condemned the aggressive privatization of public sector undertakings and pointed out the rising exploitation of labor in private sectors as a major factor behind the declining living standards of workers. He also accused the ruling authorities of systematically eroding trade union rights, preventing workers from organizing to protect their interests. Calling for the inspiration of the historic Chicago workers' struggle, Venkataswamy declared that the CPM will continue its fight for a society free of inequality. He urged the working class to gear up for a transformative movement aimed at establishing a worker-centric governance system in the country. He also extended full support to the nationwide general strike planned on May 20, urging laborers, farmers, and the general public to participate in large numbers to protest against the central government's anti-people policies. The event was attended by CPM district committee members including Upper Narasimha, Naresh, Ramakrishna, Bhasha, Ranganna, Venkatesh, Ramudu, and Gajendra, among others.
