The new Alpine A290 Rallye is ready to go racing
Alpine has unveiled its first 100% electric competition car. Built for one-make rally events and local competitions, the A290 Rallye differentiates itself from its road-going sister with key safety upgrades such as an FIA-compliant roll cage and Sabelt bucket seats. Though peak output remains unchanged at 164kW and 300Nm, the hatchback's e-motor now sends drive to the front wheels via a competition-spec ZF limited-slip differential. Alpine has also paired it with an updated gearbox and the electronic management system. Chassis tweaks include ALP Racing Suspension shock absorbers and 18" EVO Corse wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport A tyres. Controlled by Alpine Racing's bespoke ABS control unit, stopping power is provided by six-piston monoblock calipers and 350mm discs up front, while the rear gets single-pot calipers working on 280mm rotors. There's also a hydraulic handbrake to help initiate controlled slides and rotations during cornering. The new Alpine A290 Rallye is priced at €59,990 (R1,243,952 excluding VAT) and is set to make its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 10 to 13.

Alpine Wants You to Race Its New Electric Hot Hatch
Alpine turns 70 this year, and to celebrate, it's offering its first electric race car to customers. The brand based the car on its new A290 hot hatch. It's called the A290 Rallye and features all the kit you'd expect from a proper rally car. The electric motor sends 220 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque through a ZF limited-slip differential to the Rallye's front wheels. It has five more hp than the range-topping road-going A290, which can hit 62 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds. Alpine says it updated the car's gearbox and the electronic management systems to better handle the demands of stage rally driving. Photo by: Alpine Photo by: Alpine The Rallye also has a modified suspension complete with ALP Racing shock absorbers, with 18-inch EVO Corse wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A tires. Six-piston front brakes and single-piston rears with 13.8- and 11.0-inch discs provide the stopping power, which use a specific ABS tuning from Alpine Racing. And, of course, it has a hydraulic handbrake. The car uses the same 52.0-kilowatt-hour battery as the regular A290, and it'll also have a "new innovative system" that correlates the sound to the car's speed and throttle position. Inside, it has a welded roll cage and Sabelt bucket seats, both of which comply with the FIA's latest regulations. The car costs €59,990, or $70,500 at today's exchange rate. That buys you a complete, fully assembled, and painted car. This example with the white wheels and painted tires looks great. Alpine is organizing a single-rally challenge for before the end of the year that'll bring all the A290 Rallyes together. New Alpine A290 hot hatch goes extreme
Alpine has a rich history of rallying, having won the inaugural World Rally Championship in 1973 - and the firm isn't about to let people forget, because it has just unveiled the A290 Rallye. Like the A110 Rally unveiled in 2019, the all-electric Alpine A290 Rallye is a genuine racing car, which Alpine says is a 'gateway to electric competition and designed in line with the latest rally regulations'. The new car has been developed by Alpine's hi-tech engineering facility in Viry-Châtillon, France, and will hit the start line at a 'single-rally challenge' before the end of the year. The regular Alpine A290 hot hatch features some major changes over the Renault 5 on which it's based, and the Rallye includes further key motorsport upgrades. For starters, there's a full roll cage, bucket seats from Sabelt, a quick-release bonnet and a roof-mounted air intake. Advertisement - Article continues below The Rallye comes with the same 52kWh battery as the regular A290 road car, though, while the 217bhp, 300Nm front-mounted electric motor has also been retained. As a result, assuming the Rallye has a stripped-out interior, it should beat the road car's 6.4-second 0-62mph time. The A290's bespoke ZF limited-slip differential is kept, too, but the single-speed gearbox and electronic management system in the Rallye are revised, though. The Rallye gets a tweaked suspension set-up too, with ALP Racing shocks to go with the A290's bespoke subframe and multi-link rear. The Rallye also has six-piston brake calipers up front with huge 350mm discs, plus 18-inch rally wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. While the standard Alpine A290 GTS costs from £37,500, pricing for the Alpine A290 Rallye starts at 59,990 Euros (roughly £52,000) excluding VAT. While Alpine says the Rallye is designed for one-make rallying, we can't help but think how a head-to-head event with the Vauxhall Corsa Electric Rally would go.
