Delhi Police arrest 7 auto-lifters, two proclaimed offenders in separate operations

New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough, Delhi Police teams from West and South West Districts have arrested a total of nine auto-lifters and two proclaimed offenders (POs) in separate operations across the national capital. The crackdown comes as part of intensified efforts to tackle street crime, motor vehicle theft, and absconding criminals evading trial. According to a press release issued by the West District Police on Tuesday, seven notorious auto-lifters were apprehended during a series of patrol operations led by multiple police teams. The accused, identified as Dinesh alias Teda, Swantantar alias Babu, Arjun alias Teesmar Khan, Nikhil alias Noni, Ravi, Vishal, and Chetram, have collectively been previously involved in over 60 criminal cases, including theft, snatching, and violations of the Arms Act. The arrests were made during targeted patrolling by units from AATS, Punjabi Bagh, Hari Nagar, Tilak Nagar, and Vikas Puri police stations. A total of six stolen scooties and three motorcycles were recovered from their possession, helping the police solve nine separate FIRs registered across various parts of Delhi. The accused were tracked with the aid of CCTV surveillance and local intelligence. Meanwhile, in South West Delhi, teams from PS Kishangarh and PS Palam Village arrested two proclaimed offenders wanted in separate cases under the NDPS and Arms Act. In a press note issued by DCP South West, Amit Goel, it was revealed that Ifeanyi, a Nigerian national wanted in a 2018 NDPS case, and Rahul alias Jaggi, a 22-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, evading arrest in an Arms Act case since 2020, were successfully nabbed following technical and manual surveillance. "Secret information was received regarding the proclaimed offender, Rahul @ Jaggi. Accordingly, a dedicated team comprising ASI Nityanand and HC Manohar Lal was constituted under the leadership of Insp. Sudhir Kumar Gulia, SHO/PS Palam Village and under the supervision of Sh. Anil Kumar, ACP/Sub-division Delhi Cantt, to nab the offender," stated the press release. The arrests were carried out following court-issued orders declaring both individuals as proclaimed offenders in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Ifeanyi had been involved in illegal drug supply operations in Delhi-NCR, while Rahul was previously booked in multiple cases related to theft and illegal possession of arms. Quoting the press releases, Delhi Police emphasised their commitment to pursuing habitual offenders and proclaimed criminals: 'Dedicated teams have been working relentlessly to trace absconders and prevent street crime, with both technical and human intelligence playing a critical role in recent arrests.'

Delhi saw 13 car theft cases daily in first half of 2025

The national capital recorded an average of 13 cases of car thefts per day in the first half of 2025, officials said on Saturday. Between January 1 and July 15 this year, a total of 2,468 cases of car theft were registered across the national capital.(Sunil Ghosh/HT) However, Delhi also witnessed a decline in car theft cases in the first half of 2025 as compared to the same period last year. According to official police data, between January 1 and July 15 this year, a total of 2,468 cases of car theft were registered across the national capital. During the corresponding period in 2024, the figure stood at 2,732, indicating a drop of nearly 10 per cent. Senior police officials attributed this decline to enhanced night patrolling, increased deployment of plainclothes teams in auto theft hotspots, and proactive intelligence gathering by Anti-Auto Theft Squads (AATS) in various districts. The intensified crackdown on organised vehicle lifting syndicates and surveillance measures, including the use of CCTV and analytics-based policing, have also played a role, officials said. Multiple cases involving interstate gangs involved in stealing luxury vehicles and transporting them to other states using fake number plates and master keys have been busted this year.

How Delhi Police constable posed as ‘decoy customer', caught man with Rs 60,000 counterfeit currency in 2018

This month, a Delhi court is set to sentence a man convicted of dealing in counterfeit currency. However, the series of events that led to the man's arrest was set into motion on a chilly afternoon on October 16, 2018, when a secret informer arrived at the office of the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) in Delhi's Shahdara with a vital piece of information, as per court records. The informer told Constable Manu that a man named Mohammed Hussain was selling counterfeit currency at the service road near the Cross River Mall in Shahdara. This tip-off led the police to believe that Hussain had been circulating and trafficking fake Indian currency notes (FICNs). The information was conveyed to Inspector Sanjay Sharma, the AATS in-charge, and a raiding team of five police officials was formed to bust Hussain's network. According to court records, Head Constable Giriraj posed as Yakoob, a decoy customer, and stood near the location where the informer had said he had seen Hussain. Giriraj then saw Hussain and went to strike a deal with him. For two genuine Rs 500 notes, he was given counterfeit currency worth Rs 2,000 by Hussain. At close to 5 pm, Giriraj waved his hand—a predetermined signal decided by the raiding team—and the others closed in and apprehended Hussain within minutes. While conducting a search of the accused, the police found 29 fake Rs 2,000 notes from his right pant pocket. The recovered currency was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, Rohini, and after the results showed that the currency was fake, a chargesheet was filed on January 11, 2019, as per court records. Six and a half years later, a Delhi court convicted Hussain under Section 489B of the Indian Penal Code (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes). 'It is highly improbable that without any rhyme or reason for the police to pick only accused Mohd. Hussain and plant FICNs upon him…Moreover, in view of the unbreached testimonies of the witnesses available on record, the plea of accused regarding his false implication is without any basis,' Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur of Patiala House Court noted in her order dated May 30. The counsel for Hussain had argued that the accused belonged to a poor strata of society and had been falsely implicated in the case. He argued that the money had been planted by the Delhi Police. The defence lawyer had also argued that no CCTV footage of the incident had been collected and no public witnesses had joined the investigation. '…this Court has no hesitation to hold that accused Mohd. Hussain having possession of 30 FICNs in the denomination of Rs.2,000/- reached at the spot in order to supply the same to the customers,' Additional Sessions Judge Kaur said. Arguments on Hussain's sentence were heard on July 2. His sentence is likely to be decided on July 7.
