Highway police seize 26.4 lakh from Kerala-based bizmen

Coimbatore: The highway patrol police on Saturday seized Rs26.40 lakh from two men travelling on a bike from Coimbatore to Thrissur in Kerala after they failed to produce documents to prove the source of cash. According to a police officer, the duo were stopped by a team of highway patrol police conducting vehicle check at a police check post near Ellai Masaniamman Temple at Ettimadai on the Salem-Kochi National Highway. "During the search, police found the duo were carrying Rs26.40 lakh in a bag without proper documents. Suspecting it to be hawala money, the team took the duo to the KG Chavadi police station for further inquiry. " Preliminary investigation revealed that the duo, identified as A Abdul Hakeem, 49, of Vadakkancheri in Kerala, and A Abdul Rahman, 38, of Thrissur in Kerala, were involved in jewellery business and often travelled to Coimbatore to buy and sell ornaments. "We seized the amount, as the duo were not carrying proper documents to prove its source," the officer said. District superintendent of police K Karthikeyan also conducted an inquiry before the duo were handed over to Income Tax Department officials.
