‘Distortion': Seers, religious bodies appeal for peace amid Kanwariyas' vandalism

Amid recent incidents of violence reported during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad (ABAP) on Tuesday appealed to devotees to uphold the spiritual sanctity of the age-old pilgrimage and refrain from actions that undermine its religious significance. Kanwariyas carrying holy water from the Ganga in Haridwar on their way back to their hometown in Alwar district, Rajasthan, during the Kanwar Yatra, at National Highway-48 near Rajiv Chowk, in Gurugram.(Hindustan Times) According to data from the Mela Police Force Control Room, over 170 kanwariyas have been booked under charges such as hooliganism, rioting, blocking highways, obstructing police officials, breach of peace, and wrongful restraint, among others, in just five days since the Kanwar Yatra began on July 11. ABAP president Mahant Ravindra Puri expressed dismay at the increasing reports of violence and said the yatra is about 'compassion' and not 'aggression'. 'This is not just a journey; it's a deep act of devotion that dates back to Treta Yug when Lord Parshuram is said to have first brought the Kanwar from Haridwar. Later, Shravan Kumar carried his parents on a Kanwar, symbolising service, sacrifice, and devotion. Kanwariyas must remember they are following the footsteps of such revered figures. This yatra is about compassion and penance, not aggression and chaos, ' he said. Mahamandaleshwar Swami Harichetnanand Maharaj of the Shri Panchayati Naya Bada Udasin Akhada expressed concerns over 'a distortion of the yatra's essence'. He said, '...We are seeing kanwariyas pass Ganga Jal pitchers like batons in a relay race, which is a distortion of the yatra's essence...' Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand high court on Tuesday sought a response from the state's director general of police Deepam Seth and Panchayati Raj Secretary Chandresh Kumar Yadav on how the state plans to manage conducting Panchayat elections at a time when the state is witnessing huge influx of Kanwariyas and prevailing monsoon conditions across the state. Taking serious note of recent incidents of violence reported during the Kanwar Yatra, the court has directed that the response be submitted by Wednesday, when the case will be heard again.

PhD ecologist shares bird insights in Phalaborwa

LIMPOPO – With a bird book in hand before he could even speak, Dr Rion Lerm's journey from curious infant to internationally respected bird ecologist is as remarkable as the wildlife he studies. On Friday, June 6, that journey came full circle as he returned to the region where it all began, delivering an inspiring and insightful presentation at the Phalaborwa Conservation evenings held at the Coffee Lounge. The event, hosted by the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association, Mopani branch, drew a crowd of conservationists and nature lovers eager to learn from one of South Africa's leading voices in avian ecology. Lerm, a technician and ecologist with the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, captivated the audience with his lifelong journey through the world of birds, a passion that began before he could even walk. His story took flight in the early 1990s during family visits to the Kruger National Park, where, at just nine months old, a bird field guide was placed in his tiny hands. While others admired lions and elephants, young Lerm, nicknamed 'Tokka' by family, was mesmerised by the feathered inhabitants of the bushveld. This early spark ignited a deep and enduring love for birds, leading him to outshine seasoned birders at identification courses during his school years, and even portray his winged subjects through watercolour paintings. His skills earned him recognition among seasoned ornithologists. As his academic journey unfolded, so did his scientific curiosity. Lerm's BTech Honours degree at Tshwane University of Technology introduced him to ecological research, focussing on bird communities along elevation gradients in the Lebombo mountains bordering South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. A formative gap year followed, where he worked alongside leading international ecologists to investigate bird physiology and behaviour. His master's research took him into the vast semi-arid landscapes of the Kalahari, where he explored how land-use changes affect bird diversity. This year, Lerm earned his PhD through the University of KwaZulu-Natal, producing critical research on bird diversity in and around the Kruger National Park, including how birds respond to environmental extremes such as drought and seasonal shifts. These findings, which offer valuable insights for Sanparks and savanna conservation efforts across the continent, have gained widespread attention in both academic and public platforms. His work underscores the importance of birds as indicators of environmental change and the need for adaptive management in protected areas. Lerm emphasised the growing role of technology in ecological research and called on citizens to contribute to scientific knowledge through platforms like the South African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP2), African Bird Atlas Project (ABAP), eBird, and iNaturalist. 'I am looking forward to continuing my ecological work, focusing not only on birds but also on other biota, using emerging technologies and software developments to better understand and protect our natural world,' said Lerm. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

Three Udasin Akharas form new parishad to maintain unity, exerting influence

Prayagraj: In an important decision, three akharas of the Udasin sect-- Shripanchayat Akhara Bada Udasin Nirvana, Shripanchayat Naya Udasin Akhara and Shripanchayat Akhara Nirmal-- have collectively formed Udasin Nirmal Parishad to resolve mutual disputes and increase its influence. The new parishad hold significance as Ardh Kumbh in Haridwar and Kumbh Mela in Nashik are set to be held in 2027 followed by Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain in 2028. The new parishad will have bearing on the functioning of the Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad—the apex decision-making body of the 13 monastic orders of Hindus—that plays an important role in Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh and Maha Kumbh. Sources said the new parishad is sure to have an impact on ABAP as whichever side the three akharas join will have an upper hand. Sources said Jagatar Muni, secretary of Naya Udasin Akhara, was made the president of the council. Mahant Durga Das, head of Bada Udasin, was appointed the secretary, and Nirmal Akhara's secretary, Devendra Singh Shastri, was made the treasurer. The council will meet in Prayagraj in July during which representatives of the three akharas will discuss the expansion of the council as well as joining or extending support to particular faction of the ABAP.
