‘A Shared Language': Inside Country Music's Rap Revival
It's no coincidence that the two songs tied for most weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 toe the line between country and rap. Lil Nas X set the record with his Billy Ray Cyrus-featuring 'Old Town Road' in 2019, and late last year, Shaboozey tied the record when 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' hit the same 19-week mark. 'Country and rap might come from different worlds, but they thrive on the same foundation — raw storytelling and authenticity,' UnitedMasters director of A&R Aaron Hunter says. This year has brought an even bigger boom of successful crossovers between the genres. Post Malone's Big Ass Stadium Tour with Jelly Roll — two artists with roots in hip-hop now making country music — has so far featured special guests including Eminem and Quavo. Dallas rapper BigXthaPlug teamed with Bailey Zimmerman for 'All the Way,' a top five hit on the Hot 100, while ERNEST and Snoop Dogg released their country collaboration, 'Gettin' Gone.' On the festival front, the country-heavy Stagecoach was more rap-inclusive in 2025, with Nelly and T-Pain playing to major audiences. Meanwhile, Morgan Wallen's Sand in My Boots Festival had Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz and Three 6 Mafia onstage. 'Both genres share the same theme of heartbreak, life stories and struggle, whether it's rural life or urban hustle, and that grit creates a natural connection,' Hunter says. He also points to the rising use of trap drums and 808s in country and rap, which has 'blurred lines, making collaborations feel less forced and more like a shared language.' BigXthaPlug will follow the success of 'All the Way' with a country-trap project this summer that will include guest appearances from Jelly Roll, Post Malone and Shaboozey. Even though the Dallas native never listened to country music growing up, he has felt a warm welcome from the Nashville community. 'My fan base is the country world's fan base,' he says. ‘Let's not twist the message': Country music star clears up viral AMAs moment
Shaboozey is setting the record straight about his viral moment at the American Music Awards Monday night. The 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' singer appeared to provide context behind the moment in an X post Tuesday, writing "When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased." He then followed up with another post that read, 'The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' Shaboozey's posts were in response to the viral moment where he appeared to side-eye Megan Moroney while the duo was presenting the award for favorite country duo or group. 'Country music has been an important part of AMA history,' Shaboozey said a video clip of the award show. 'The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride.' Pride, who died in 2020, is regarded as country music's first Black superstar. 'That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson,' Moroney said. 'And this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' Shaboozey was then seen side-eyeing and scrunching his face in apparent confusion. He then chuckles and proceeds to introduce the nominees. The reaction from the 'Good News' singer had people on social media convinced that Shaboozey was mocking Moroney for spreading false information. People even started bombarding the 'Tennesee Orange' singer's posts with rude comments such as, 'Thinking the Carter's 'basically' invented country music is hilarious,' and 'Let's do our research on where country music came from.' Shaboozey later came to Moroney's defense by clarifying his actions on one of her Instagram posts. 'Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney! She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music and I've got nothing but respect for her,' Shaboozey wrote. 'I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about. Let's not twist the message — she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light!" The Carters — consisting of A. P. Carter, Sara Dougherty Carter, and Maybelle Addington Carter — are considered 'the First Family of Country Music,' according to the Country Music Hall of Fame. The family is credited with inventing the kind of harmony and singing that is commonly used in country music today. Black musician Lesley Riddle also had an impact on The Cater's style. Riddle helped A.P. compose songs and taught Maybelle her famous 'Carter lick' guitar style. Shaboozey Giving Megan Moroney The Mean Side Eye For Crediting The Carter Family For Creating Country Music Sparks Plenty of Reactions
Source: Ethan Miller / Getty / Shaboozey / Megan Moroney Shaboozey couldn't keep a straight face when Megan Moroney made an egregious claim about who created country music, and thankfully, it was caught in 4K. The 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' singer went viral for not being able to keep a poker face, and understandably so after fellow country artist Megan Moroney had the audacity and caucasity to credit The Carter Family as the inventors of country music. It was one of the head-scratching moments during the 2025 American Music Awards that garnered plenty of reactions on social media. While presenting the award for the Favorite Country Duo or Group category, Shaboozey began the segment by reading the teleprompter, telling the audience and viewers, 'Country music has been an important part of AMA history. The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charlie Pride.' Moroney got the ultimate side eye from Shaboozey when she followed him by saying, 'That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' The reactions to the moment were instant, with many users on X, formerly Twitter, basically praising the artist for keeping it real following Moroney's comments. Shaboozey did respond on his personal X account after the moment went viral, writing in a post that tries to help him save face, writing, 'The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' It's all good Shaboozey, no need to explain, we all made the same face listening to Moroney make that comment. You can see more reactions in the gallery below. Shaboozey Explains The Bombastic Side-Eye From 2025 American Music Awards
Chart-topping country star, Shaboozey, went viral following the 2025 American Music Awards. While presenting the award for Favorite Country Duo Or Group with fellow country singer Megan Moroney, the 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' phenom side-eyed her after she stated that the Carter Family 'invented country.' 'This award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music,' Moroney read from the teleprompter. Shaboozey stood there with a puzzled look on his face, but took to social media on Tuesday (May 27) with a proper response. 'Google: Lesley Riddle, Steve Tartar, Harry Gay, Defoe Bailey, and The Carter Family…' Shaboozey tweeted the day after the awards show. 'When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased. The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' Not to be confused with Beyoncé and Cowboy Carter, Moroney was referring to a group of musicians from the 20th century who many consider to be the first stars of country music since their work popularized the genre. However, they did not invent the genre. Many Black musicians like guitarist Lesley Riddle was part of those pioneering artists that helped define the country sound. Shaboozey also defended Moroney on Instagram — who faced backlash about the statement— noting that his reaction had nothing to do with her. 'Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney! She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music and I've got nothing but respect for her,' he commented on her post. The 30-year-old continued, 'I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about. Let's not twist the message— she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light!' Dan + Shay took home the win for Favorite Country Duo Or Group while Beyoncé was named Favorite Female Country Artist and Cowboy Carter won for Favorite Country Album. Shaboozey Responds To Viral AMAs Moment on X
The 2025 American Music Awards went off without a hitch on Monday, May 26, but that doesn't mean it wasn't without its awkward moments. The most awkward of the night went to Shaboozey and Megan Moroney. Now Shaboozey is responding to his viral AMA moment on Twitter, taking the opportunity to give fans a little lesson on the history of country music. The awkward moment, ICYMI, happened when Shaboozey and Megan took to the stage to present the award for Best Country Duo or Group. 'Country music has been an important part of AMA history,' Shaboozey said. 'The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride.' Megan then took over, adding, 'That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson. And this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' It was that last comment about the Carter family inventing country music that earned an eye roll into a side-eye and squint of confusion from Shaboozey who laughed after an awkward pause before continuing. His reaction quickly went viral and, IMO, will definitely earn the 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' singer a place in the country meme hall of fame. While I can't be sure, it does sound like Megan is reading off a teleprompter when she said this line, which is a little surprising. Thanks in part to Beyoncé and her Cowboy Carter collaborators, including artists like Shaboozey, the contributions of Black country artists are being increasingly celebrated in the mainstream. And given all the discourse about who really originated country music and the genre's history of discounting Black performers, Shaboozey's reaction isn't exactly surprising. The singer addressed his eye roll/side eye move on X following the awards, writing, 'When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased...' He followed that up with a second, more diplomatic message: 'The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' Megan has not publicly commented on the viral clip, but it sounds like there's no bad blood between the two. All's well that end's well with a little publicity, right?
