ADAFSA releases Abu Dhabi Date Varieties Guide
Abu Dhabi: In conjunction with the launch of the 21st Liwa Date Festival 2025, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) released the Abu Dhabi Date Varieties Guide, a comprehensive reference for the most prominent date varieties in the emirate. ADAFSA's pavilion at the festival will witness promoting the guide to help farmers, visitors, and stakeholders know more about the palm farming and date production. Featuring 61 date varieties classified by their environmental and geographical traits, the guide clarifies varieties suitable for arid regions and others adapted to high-humidity coastal areas. The guide further provides in-depth details on ripening times, production rates, unique traits for each variety, and recommendations to improve quality and productivity. The guide highlights several prominent date varieties, including "Fard," widely grown in Abu Dhabi, particularly in Al Ain region. It is a commercial variety consumed both as fully ripe (Rutab), and dry (Tamer). Another variety is "Dabbas," a commercially significant variety thrives in arid environments such as the Al Dhafra region. Furthermore, the guide introduces "Naghal" dates, an early-maturing variety of high economic value, primarily consumed as fully ripe (Rutab). In this regard, ADAFSA emphasized that releasing this guide aligns with its strategy to promote sustainable agriculture and provide farmers with accurate information for selecting environmentally appropriate varieties. Moreover, the guide will contribute to preserving the diversity of local varieties while enhancing the economic value of the emirate's date palm sector. According to ADAFSA, the guide serves as a technical reference for farmers and professionals to improve agricultural productivity and food security through cultivation of high-quality local cultivars. The Authority emphasized that publishing such guides reinforces its efforts to promote Abu Dhabi's position as a leading hub for sustainable agriculture, aligning with Abu Dhabi's vision for comprehensive and sustainable development. The guide is available to the public on ADAFSA's website. It will also be distributed to farmers as part of ADAFSA's awareness programs and initiatives, to ensure its information is accessible to all target groups, with a focus on visitors of the Liwa Date Festival 2025.

Abu Dhabi shuts down Cocobona Cafeteria after repeated food safety violations
Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has issued an administrative closure order against "Cocobona Cafeteria" in Abu Dhabi, holding commercial licence (CN-3952783), for violating Law No (2) of 2008 concerning food in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and its associated regulations. The closure was also due to the establishment's risk to public health. ADAFSA stated that the food control report indicated the administrative closure was a result of repeated food safety violations and the failure to implement effective corrective measures, necessitating immediate action to ensure food safety and consumer health. The authority emphasised that the closure order will remain in effect until the violations are rectified and that the establishment may resume work only after fully addressing all issues and complying with all food safety requirements. ADAFSA urged the public to report any violations observed in food establishments or suspicions regarding food products by calling the toll-free Abu Dhabi Government number 800555 so that inspectors take necessary actions to ensure safe and healthy food.

Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority receives global accreditation for camel disease proficiency testing
18 July 2025 12:21 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has been awarded international accreditation (ISO/IEC 17043:2023) for proficiency testing in camel disease diagnostics, becoming the first globally accredited entity in this field. The accreditation was granted by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) after ADAFSA met all stringent international accreditation represents global recognition of ADAFSA's competency in providing proficiency testing services, which are a fundamental tool for ensuring the quality and reliability of laboratory diagnostics for camel diseases. It enhances accuracy and efficiency standards while bridging gaps in specialised measurement programmes within this line with this achievement, Biosecurity Affairs Division at ADAFSA—internationally recognised by World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) as a Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases and a Collaborating Centre for Quality Management Systems—has launched the world's first proficiency programme for evaluating laboratories' efficiency in detecting antibodies for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in camels. This programme focuses on improving validation processes for diagnostic kits used in antibody detection, supporting global efforts to combat and eradicate the initiatives reflect ADAFSA's commitment to supporting national and international laboratories in developing precise laboratory diagnostics for camel diseases, ensuring high-quality results on a global scale. This latest achievement raises the total number of global certifications obtained by ADAFSA to 15, reinforcing its leadership in food security and animal disease control, particularly camel diseases, and strengthening its scientific status as a global reference centre in this domain. Notably, ADAFSA's Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases, established in May 2022 and recognised by WOAH, serves as an authoritative scientific body in diagnosing and studying camel diseases. It offers advanced diagnostic, research, and training services in collaboration with leading international institutions. This accreditation further cements Abu Dhabi and the UAE's position as a leading hub for animal health and biosecurity.

ADAFSA launches Summer Camp at Bani Yas Research Station
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) launched "ADAFSA Summer Camp" at Bani Yas Research Station on July 15. Targeting children aged 4-14 years, this two-week camp aligns with the Year of Community and the "Plant the Emirates" program. The camp aims to provide unique educational and recreational experiences while interactively promoting awareness of agriculture, sustainability, and food safety. In this regard, Badr Al Shehhi, Director of the Communication and Community Engagement Division at ADAFSA, said: "We are delighted to launch ADAFSA Summer Camp, which combines entertainment and education. Through this camp, we aim to instill values of agricultural sustainability and food awareness in children, aligning with ADAFSA's vision and the 'Plant the Emirates' initiative. We believe that investing in children's education today secures a more sustainable future for generations to come." According to Al Shehhi, the summer camp features an educational field trip to Bani Yas Research Station, where participants will tour ADAFSA's facilities and explore its key research projects. The camp will also present the children's awareness videos, "Sustainability with Jassim and Noura." He added the camp's activities also comprise awareness workshops on growing small plants using safe tools, simplified theoretical sessions on agriculture and food, fun practical activities such as picking flowers and fruits produced at the station, and the distribution of educational comic books with engaging visuals explaining concepts of agriculture and sustainability to the children. The camp reflects ADAFSA's ongoing efforts to enhance community engagement and disseminate knowledge about agriculture and food security. This ultimately reinforces Abu Dhabi's leadership position in agricultural innovation and sustainability.
