Canadian Dante Leon goes after submission grappling world title in Bangkok

Seventeen years after being introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Canadian Dante Leon goes after a world title Friday. The 29-year-old from Harrow, Ont., who now calls Toledo, Ohio, home, faces American champion Tye Ruotolo for the One Championship welterweight submission grappling title in the co-main event of One Fight Night 31 at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok. 'This is the most important match of my career … Achieving that title, achieving that status would definitely be a life-changing thing,' Leon said in an interview. The Muay Thai main event is an all-Thailand affair pitting Kongthoranee Sor Sommai against former One bantamweight champion Nong-O Hama. Leon and Ruotolo have met twice before, with Leon winning a decision in 2020 and Ruotolo winning by submission in the 2021 rematch. 'I think any insight from those matches should be kind of taken with a grain of salt,' said Leon. 'There's been quite a bit of time between the matches.' Both men have distinguished grappling records. The 22-year-old Ruotolo took up BJJ at the age of three with twin brother Kade, who holds One's lightweight (170-pound) submission grappling title. In 2019, 16-year-old Tye became the youngest athlete to make it to the semifinals of the prestigious ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) World Championship. In 2022, he became the youngest-ever IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) world champion. Leon is a two-time IBJJF no-gi world champion and was named Grappling Insider's Male Grappler of the Year in 2023. Last year at the ADCC World Championships, he defeated ADCC world champions Mica Galvao and Giancarlo Bodoni en route to bronze in the absolute (open) division. Leon won his One Championship debut on Dec. 6, making short work of Brazilian Bruno (Puccibull) Pucci on the undercard of One Fight Night 26: Lee vs. Rasulov. He earned a US$50,000 bonus for his performance. He then defeated Norway's Tommy Langaker via decision on Jan. 10, also in Bangkok. Leon has not competed since, focusing instead on preparing for Ruotolo. Ruotolo, who is coming off a knee injury that has sidelined him since July, has won all seven previous One Championship bouts. His bouts last an average of two minutes and one second. He claimed the 185-pound title in November 2023, winning a unanimous decision over Russia's Magomed Abdulkadirov. Ruotolo has defended the championship twice, submitting Australian Izaak Michell in April 2024 and earning a decision over South Africa's Jozef Chen in July. Ruotolo calls Leon a threat 'in every department.' One Championship submission grappling bouts consist of a single 10-minute round with victory achieved by a submission, verbal tapout, stoppage initiated by either the referee (due to imminent danger) or an athlete's cornerman stoppage. The judges decide the outcome if it goes the distance. In order to make prime time in North America, the card starts at 8 a.m. local time in Thailand with Leon expecting to compete around 11 a.m. He says that is not an issue given he normally trains around that time. Born in Harrow in southwestern Ontario, Leon grew up playing hockey but switched to BJJ at 12 years old at the behest of his mother after learning he wanted to spend less time on the ice. Leon turned down golf and piano lessons before his father suggested jiu-jitsu. His BJJ training eventually took him to Toledo where he now has his two gyms. 'Each day that I get to do it, each day that I get to wake up and train, prepare for competition, teach my students is a blessing,' he said of jiu-jitsu. 'I really do enjoy it.' During Elections Get campaign news, insight, analysis and commentary delivered to your inbox during Canada's 2025 election. But he acknowledges it's a sport that takes its toll. 'Jiu-jitsu is not something that's great for your body health-wise,' he said. 'Especially at a high level when you train a lot, I think it's something that can really break your body down … My training has a lot of layers. There's a lot to do with the jiu-jitsu side and the wrestling, and the preparation for my skill development. 'And then there's also a lot of strength and conditioning and plyometric work that can kind of fill the gaps and strengthen me so that I can do jiu-jitsu more frequently and do it for a longer time.' — This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 30, 2025

‘The Smashing Machine' trailer: Dwayne Johnson transforms into UFC legend Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie's biopic

Dwayne Johnson sheds his signature charisma for a rawness in the first trailer for The Smashing Machine, a biopic about UFC legend Mark Kerr. Directed by Benny Safdie in his solo feature debut, the A24 film offers a stripped-down portrait of the former MMA champion — and unveils Johnson as audiences have never seen him before. Set to release on October 3, The Smashing Machine tells the story of Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion and four-time ADCC winner, whose rise to fame was matched by deeply personal battles with substance abuse and fractured relationships. The film is inspired by the 2002 HBO documentary of the same name, which chronicled Kerr's harrowing journey inside and outside the cage. Joining Johnson is Emily Blunt, playing Kerr's wife Dawn Staples, in their second on-screen collaboration after Jungle Cruise. The supporting cast includes Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk. In a statement to Variety, Johnson said, 'I'm at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter… that explore humanity, struggle, and pain.' He praised Safdie for creating stories that are 'raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting.' Safdie, best known for co-directing Uncut Gems and Good Time, both critically acclaimed for their intensity and nerve, also wrote the screenplay and produces alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Eli Bush, Hiram Garcia, and David Koplan.

KYAN Technologies to Present New Data on Optim.AI™ Immunotherapy and Real-World Pan-Cancer Utility at AACR 2025

Data shows validation of FPM platform in breast cancer immunotherapy and 85% clinical concordance across over 20 solid cancers and hematologic malignancies. SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE, April 19, 2025 / / -- KYAN Technologies Pte. Ltd. ('KYAN') today announced that two abstracts will be presented on its functional precision medicine platform at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2025, taking place April 25 – 30, in Chicago, Illinois. The two studies highlight the clinical utility and translational potential of a platform that rapidly identifies effective treatment combinations through ex vivo functional screening and combinatorial analytics, supporting both personalized patient care and oncology drug development. BREAST CANCER IMMUNOTHERAPY: FUNCTIONAL COMBINATORIAL EVALUATION In this study, KYAN researchers applied an experimental adaptation of the platform to evaluate immunotherapy combinations in breast cancer. The approach integrated high-content imaging, short-term 3D tumor-immune co-culture, and combinatorial analysis to rank the effectiveness of immunotherapy combinations in HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancer spheroids co-cultured with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The platform enabled real-time assessment of immune cell infiltration and tumor-specific killing, allowing for the phenotypic ranking of all possible combinations of from12 FDA-approved therapies, including ADCC/CDC antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). 'This study bridges a key gap in immunotherapy testing,' said Sharon Pei Yi Chan, Scientist at KYAN Technologies. 'By integrating multi-cellular, high-content screening with the platform, we're able to evaluate immunotherapy-based combinations in clinically relevant tumor models, using limited material and within a rapid timeframe. This creates a new path for functional, patient-specific immuno-oncology strategies.' REAL-WORLD CONCORDANCE: MULTI-CANCER CLINICAL VALIDATION A second study evaluated 75 retrospective and prospective clinical cases across more than 20 cancer types to assess the real-world concordance of with patient treatment outcomes. The platform demonstrated 85.4% concordance with actual clinical responses, accurately identifying both effective and resistant regimens. Cancer types included non-Hodgkin lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia, sarcoma, breast, colorectal and ovarian cancers, amongst others, with sample sources such as bone marrow, peripheral blood, tissue biopsies, and pleural effusions. These results reinforce the platform's ability to distinguish treatments associated with clinical benefit from those unlikely to be effective, underscoring its clinical application across a diverse set of patient cases. 'These results validate the ability of to support therapeutic decision-making by accurately predicting both response and resistance,' said Dr. Edward Kai-Hua Chow, Chief Scientific Officer at KYAN Technologies. 'By functionally interrogating hundreds of treatment permutations using patient-derived samples, we can deliver clinically meaningful insights within days, helping clinicians make more informed and timely therapy choices.' 'We're bridging the cancer care gap by advancing revolutionary technologies that are clinically validated and built for real-world use,' said Hugo Saavedra, CEO of KYAN Technologies. ' is uniquely positioned to transform drug development and how treatment decisions are made by combining speed, precision, and wide applicability in a way traditional approaches simply can't. These new studies show how can help drug developers and clinicians uncover new and effective treatment options, whether through cutting-edge immunotherapy testing or pan-cancer functional precision medicine.' UAE's Alserkal invited to big league in Norway after WGM status

10 Apr 2025 01:24 KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)It's heady days for Rouda Alserkal, the newly crowned first woman Grandmaster of UAE chess. Fresh from her norm being ratified, the 15-year-old will be heading to Norway to participate in a tournament with heavyweights of the chess world, on a special invite by organisers of the Norway Chess a press conference in Dubai at the Seven Seas hotel on Wednesday evening, it was confirmed that Alserkal will be travelling to the coastal city of Stavanger to participate in the May 26 to June 6 to Aletihad on her way to the conference, Alserkal said the news has barely sunk in. "When I saw the message, when I woke up about a week ago, I could not believe it; it sounded too good to be true, you know, like a scam. But then my club – Abu Dhabi Chess & Mind Games Club (ADCC) – confirmed it," the excited teen Norway Chess Open will be the home event of world No.1 and five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, besides big names such as D Gukesh, current world champion and India's youngest to do so, Hikaru Nakamura, the Fischer Random chess world champion, India's first WGM Koneru Humpy and many more."I was very close to beating [India WGM] Dronavalli Harika in a rapid game at the Asian Chess Championship. I lost eventually, but that game gave me belief. When I received this [Norway] news, I told my coach immediately that I need to start preparing," she belief turned into determination as she doubled up her training hours from the four hours she used to dedicate to it before achieving the WGM norm last November. She did not wait for her title to be ratified, which was last week. "I have cut down on my fun time. But I am not really complaining about that because if I want to achieve greatness, of course, I'll have to sacrifice something."I was speaking to Salem Saleh [the only Grandmaster UAE had until Alserkal] two days ago, and we discussed openings and endgames as areas I must focus on more. Besides, with opportunities like this, I want to target entering the 2,300 Elo rating mark," said Alserkal, adding that she is looking forward to potential interactions with elite players and gaining insights during the Alserkal's achievements, Norway Chess managing director Kjell Madland said: "She stands tall as an inspiration for women in this region to achieve. The Norway Chess Open provides a great opportunity for Grandmasters and chess players to hone their skills and gain competitive exposure. "We hope to find and encourage many future chess stars from the Middle East to play in the Norway Chess Open." Madland also expressed interest in creating future synergies with potential partners in the Grandmaster group, in which Alserkal has been invited to participate, will have nine rounds, with opportunities for title norms and a prize fund of €13, Alawlaqi, the media spokesperson of ADCC, said it was a source of pride to see one of their own flourishing. "What Rouda has achieved is not just for herself, but for the whole country. We are now looking at our other players now to reach such levels. This partnership with Norway Chess recognises the hard work we have put in with events such as the AD Chess Festival, which is popular in many parts of the world, how far Abu Dhabi has come with its public reputation and having many such partnerships in the UAE and abroad."
