Email money@ ASK ADELE I asked Virgin Media to cancel my broadband contract when I moved house – it still owes me £574 Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Q. In March my wife and I moved out of our home in Eastleigh, Hampshire, to a property in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. We needed to cancel our 18 month broadband contract with Virgin Media as the company doesn't provide a service on the Isle of Wight. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Consumer Champion Adele Cooke solves your money issues We were told that we couldn't pay an early exit penalty to do so. Virgin Media said it would take £545 as a direct debit in March and this would be credited to our account in April. It said it would also refund our account balance of £29.34 at the same time. The direct debit was taken but we never received the refund. We have called Virgin Media several times to chase the money but have had no luck. This is a huge amount of money and it is giving us a lot of worry. We have been loyal Virgin Media customers for the last 25 years and feel very let down. Please will you help us? Chris Hebbes, Isle of Wight. A. I was disappointed to hear about how Virgin Media had treated you, it's a real kick in the teeth as you've been customers for more than 25 years. In general, if you decide to cancel your broadband contract before it ends then you will usually need to pay an exit fee. The exact amount you will be charged depends on your provider. It will usually involve paying off the remaining months of your contract, plus the cost of any equipment you were given, such as your router. But there are a few reasons why you may be able to leave your deal early. These include if your provider has increased your bill, your broadband is slow or you have an issue that your provider has not solved. In your situation, you should have been able to cancel your contract for free as the service is not available in the Isle of Wight. Virgin Media knows the rules, so I was surprised that it had not refunded you. When I contacted the firm, its customer service team got in touch with you immediately to apologise for the delay in sending your refund. As the amount you are owed was more than £500, your case should have been escalated to a team manager before it was issued. In your case the refund was not escalated so your refund was not processed. Virgin Media has now sent you a cheque for £674, which includes a £100 gesture of goodwill. The money should be with you in the next ten working days. I am glad I was able to resolve this issue for you and hope you can now focus on getting settled in your new home. Squeeze team total: £226,802. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? I changed phone deal to save money – then EE said I wracked up £94 in extra charges
Got money problems? We can help fight for your cash back or challenge the way firms operate. Email money@ ASK ADELE I changed phone deal to save money – then EE said I wracked up £94 in extra charges Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Q. I've had a mobile phone contract with BT for the last eight years and currently pay £12.66 a month. In April, I was offered a new contract with more data for just £10 a month. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Consumer Champion Adele Cooke solves your money issues The contract was provided by EE as the two networks are merging. I was pleased with the offer so I agreed and signed up. But I was shocked when I received my first bill for March. I was charged an eye-watering £56 - £43.34 more than in February. The next month another shock bill followed, this time for £58. Both times I was told that I had gone over my data allowance. When I called and asked what I had used the extra data for I was told that the company does not have the information. I thought this was unfair, especially as I had set up a £40 bill cap on my account. I have spent hours on the phone trying to sort this out. Is there anything you can do? Malcolm Finch, via email. A. We all use data to scroll on social media, surf the web and stay connected to our loved ones. But in this situation your contract caused a disconnect between you and EE. It is important to read the terms and conditions of a mobile phone contract before you sign up. Although it may seem similar to your current plan, there could be higher fees or penalties if you make too many calls, use extra data or send lots of texts. This is what happened in your case. BT said you exceeded your data limit on your March and April bills. You were charged for the data you used up to your spending cap of £40 a month. A spending cap allows you to limit how much you can use your phone outside of your normal plan. BT has agreed to refund you £79.98 for the additional charges as a gesture of goodwill. A member of its team has also called to explain how the spending cap works so you do not get hit with a big bill again. This case shows how important it is to set a spending cap that you can afford. It should help you to limit how much you spend on roaming, picture messages and texts, which can stop you racking up extra charges. If you have a spending cap in place then your provider should let you know when you are getting close to your allowance. That's why I was very surprised that EE unwittingly let you rack up such a big bill, but I'm glad you have got your money back. Squeeze team total: £224,628. ‘NYT Mini' Clues And Answers For Friday, July 25
Mini Crossword Looking for the answers to Thursday's NYT Mini? Check them out here: We are just one day away from the weekend, and today should offer you a bit of a breezy Mini to get through in order to start your Thursday. But first… The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper's larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays. Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you'll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives. The NYT Mini is a fun daily distraction that usually takes no time at all. I try to beat the standard weekday grid in less than a minute. But sometimes I can't quite figure out one or two clues and need to reveal the answer. To help you avoid doing that, here are the NYT Mini Crossword answers (spoilers lie ahead, of course): NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers ACROSS FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder 1) What a palm tree emoji on Slack might indicate, informally - VACAY 6) Skirt - EVADE 7) iPhone app for jotting - NOTES 8) C.E.O., C.F.O. or C.T.O. - TITLE 9) Requirements for pink or purple hair - DYES DOWN 1) Let off a little steam - VENT 2) Skirt - AVOID 3) Like a remark that might elicit a "me-ow" - CATTY 4) "Skyfall" singer - ADELE 5) Positive R.S.V.P.s - YESES Mini A few tricky, overly clever clues today like 'a remark that elicits a 'me-ow' being 'catty.' Like come on, how were you going to naturally guess that? I also got the CEO, CFO and CTO one wrong at first as I could have sworn that was going to be 'execs," and I was surprised to learn that was not the case. The two words for skirt that had nothing to do with clothes were pretty clever. And I don't use Slack or emojis, but I could figure out vacay regardless. I have a repair policy with Currys but it will not fix my fridge freezer – now I'm £360 out of pocket
Got money problems? We can help fight for your cash back or challenge the way firms operate. Email money@ ASK ADELE I have a repair policy with Currys but it will not fix my fridge freezer – now I'm £360 out of pocket Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Q. I PAY £36 a year for my Currys Care and Repair plan for my fridge freezer. The policy says that if my fridge stops working Currys will come and fix it within seven days, if not, I could get a replacement. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Consumer Champion Adele Cooke solves your money issues In October, my fridge developed a fault and would not keep my food cold. I called Currys and it sent an engineer to check what was causing the issue. After a few days I called Currys again and a man came to my home to fix my fridge. He said it couldn't be fixed so Curry would send me a new one. But I haven't heard anything from them since. I really needed a working fridge so I contacted another company. I paid £360 for a new fridge freezer, which was delivered the next day. I've wasted £36 and am now hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Can you help? Kathryn Cudmore, Lincolnshire. A. Your plan with Currys promised care and repair but you received neither when your fridge unexpectedly stopped working. I was disappointed to hear that Currys had fallen below its usually high standards. The Care and Repair policy promises breakdown support when you need it. Once you have signed up you should be able to contact Currys as soon as a device breaks. The company is so confident in its ability that if it takes more than a week to repair your appliance then you can get a replacement for free. Meanwhile, if the device can't be repaired then Currys will give you a gift card so you can get a new one. This is what you were told when the repair man came to your house. Despite these promises Currys left you out in the cold - which was more than could be said for your fridge freezer. I wanted to get your issue resolved as soon as possible so I put your case to Currys. A spokesperson apologised and said it was not the level of service Currys prides itself on. You have been sent a cheque for £333.32, which includes the value of the voucher, refund for your policy, original delivery, installation charges and the cost to recycle the old product. I am so glad the money is back with you. It is always worth complaining to a company if its service falls below the levels you were promised. Make a note of the date and time you made any calls to a company's customer service. You should also save any letters or emails you receive to use as evidence. Squeeze Team total: £223,150.
