27 May 2025 11:05 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)As the 25th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion concluded in Abu Dhabi, the emirate not only made history as the first Middle Eastern host but also set a powerful new agenda for the future of global public health. Over four transformative days, more than 2,000 experts, leaders, and changemakers from over 100 countries convened to co-create solutions for planetary health and by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), and supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the conference delivered a suite of tangible global outcomes: 15 policy recommendations, 10 long-term strategic partnerships, and 385 expert-led sessions – all converging around the unifying theme of Settings for Planetary Health and Well-being. Discussions emphasised a paradigm shift from healthcare to holistic health creation, grounded in equity, climate resilience, and systems the most consequential outputs of IUHPE 2025 were policy recommendations that address some of the most pressing public health imperatives of the 21st century. These included Reframing Digital Health: From Tech-First to People-First: While digital health is revolutionising care delivery, the conference emphasised that technology must be an enabler – not a called for a collaborative, inclusive approach that ensures digital tools address the needs of all population segments, particularly the most vulnerable. The goal: enhance accessibility and affordability without displacing traditional care models. It's not about replacing doctors with devices – it's about using innovation to bring care closer to other recommendations comprised Designing Cooler, Smarter Cities for a Heating Planet: As extreme heat events grow more frequent, delegates endorsed nature-based and tech-powered urban design solutions. A call to action emerged for the adoption of reflective, porous, and green surfaces as the new global standard. These smart surfaces—combined with solar PV and urban forestry – offer cost-effective, climate-resilient solutions that make cities cooler, healthier, and more Health as a Right, Not a Privilege: A powerful outcome from IUHPE 2025 was the recognition that mental health must be treated as a systemic right. The policy roadmap urges countries to embed mental well-being into education, urban planning, and primary healthcare. Co-creation with youth and vulnerable groups through digital engagement and participatory design was highlighted as key to culturally relevant solutions. Cross-border investment in AI-powered tools and digital equity will also support global mental health Preparedness: With pandemics, climate shocks, and conflicts increasingly straining health systems, the conference put forward robust recommendations for emergency preparedness. These include boosting healthcare surge capacity, deploying mobile health units, and building community-based response programs. Importantly, mental health support and real-time surveillance must be integrated into all emergency protocols to ensure holistic From Healthcare to Health: A Systems Shift: the conference encouraged a decisive move away from reactive care to proactive health creation. We are no longer reacting—we are redesigning health itself.'Reflecting the UAE's commitment to collaborative action, eight strategic agreements were signed between ADPHC and global health leaders including Boehringer Ingelheim, Organon, Emirates Cancer Society, Gilead Sciences, AstraZeneca, Novartis, IHLAD, Ma'an , MSD and Roche. These partnerships span key areas such as non-communicable disease prevention, women's health, early screenings, and community wellness—laying the foundation for sustained localised impact and regional leadership in proactive Tu'itahi, President of IUHPE, said: 'Abu Dhabi has redefined what global collaboration in health promotion looks like. The new initiative offers free cancer, diabetes, and heart screenings for basic insurance holders through a joint ADPHC–Ma'an effort. May 19, 2025 Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an have signed an agreement to launch a fundraising initiative supporting early screening for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes among basic health insurance holders in the emirate. The initiative covers free screenings for cervical, breast, and colorectal cancers in women aged 40 to 75, and colorectal cancer in men of the same age group. It also includes early detection programmes for type 2 diabetes and heart disease risks. The agreement was signed at the 25th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion at ADNEC by Dr Rashid Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADPHC, and Engineer Abdulla Hamid Al Ameri, Director General of Ma'an. Fundraising will be led by Ma'an, while ADPHC will oversee implementation and service quality. The project aims to improve health outcomes for residents with limited insurance coverage and strengthen public-private collaboration in healthcare development.

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), an affiliate of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boehringer Ingelheim, a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, to enhance health outcomes for patients living with chronic diseases in the Emirate. The partnership aims to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CRM) conditions, pulmonary fibrosis, and stroke. With non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on the rise across the UAE, this collaboration underscores the importance of joint, data-driven approaches to prevention, early detection, and public education. Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases remain leading contributors to hospitalisations and long-term health complications in the region. The MoU outlines a series of public awareness campaigns designed to educate communities on the risks, symptoms, and management of CRM conditions and pulmonary fibrosis. In addition, both organisations will work together to collect data and generate insights, promote healthier lifestyle choices, and drive participation in early screening and health education initiatives. Both entities will collaborate to enhance women's health by focusing on key areas of intervention and addressing critical health challenges that uniquely or disproportionately affect women. The agreement was signed by His Excellency Dr Rashed Alsuwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre and Ramy Koussa, Middle East, Turkey and Africa Associate Vice President at Organon. The agreement marks a shared commitment to advancing women's health outcomes in Abu Dhabi. The partnership aims to enhance women's health and support a healthy pregnancy journey through various initiatives. These include delivering awareness campaigns, research and sharing insights on priority women's health conditions. ADPHC and Gilead Sciences Ireland sign MoU to strengthen public health collaboration in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) has signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gilead Sciences Ireland to enhance disease prevention, early detection, and public awareness in key health areas in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration between ADPHC and Gilead Sciences across two core pillars: disease awareness and education campaigns and screening and early detection and diagnosis. The partnership will focus on blood-borne viruses, including hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV. Dr. Faisal Al Ahbabi, Acting Executive Director of Communicable Diseases Sector, Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre and Vitor Papao, General Manager, Gilead Sciences, signed the MoU during the 25th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion, taking place from 13 to 16 May, 2025, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). H.E. Dr. Rashid Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre commented on the partnership: "This MoU marks a strategic step in strengthening our response to public health challenges. By collaborating with Gilead Sciences, we aim to amplify our efforts in disease awareness, early screening, and empowering the public and healthcare providers. Together, we will work to build a healthier and more informed population in Abu Dhabi." Vitor Papao, General Manager of Gilead Sciences, added: "At Gilead Sciences, we believe in the power of partnership to transform public health. Key activities under the MoU include co-developing public awareness campaigns across digital and traditional platforms, promoting proactive screening among high-risk populations, and joint initiatives to align local practices with global standards of care. Additionally, both parties will explore digital solutions to enhance patient tracking and improve referral and follow-up mechanisms. In 2024, the Centre released its Public Health System Strengthening Report (PHSSR), emphasising the need to target non-communicable diseases and improve early detection through proactive campaigns and systemic enhancements.
