Stormy days ahead as 2 weather systems 'park' above Indianapolis: the latest forecast

Thunderstorms will roll through Indianapolis beginning in the evening of June 4, the National Weather Service predicts. Stormy weather is expected to stick around until at least the morning of June 7, when the sun will return for a calmer weekend. The dreary days ahead are thanks to the collision of two weather systems over the Midwest. A northern cold front will meet a southern warm front, fizzling out with a prolonged series of storms. "The front is going to just sit over our area for a few days, which is why we've got multiple days of rain and thunderstorms," NWS meteorologist Kacie Fuson said. While a few isolated storms might cause dangerous high winds through the end of this week, flooding from excessive rainfall is the primary concern, according to the NWS. There's a marginal possibility that the thunderstorms will be severe. The stormy days will follow a cluster of hot, sunny days made hazy by wildfire smoke drifting over from Canada. The sun is expected to return this weekend once the colliding fronts move out of the area. But don't break out your lawn chairs just yet: a separate weather system will bring another round of storms next week, Fuson said. 🌥️/ ⛈️ Wednesday: Warm and hazy during the day, with temperatures as high as 87 degrees. Winds between about 10 and 15 mph and gusts as high as 28 mph. Scattered storms will develop and then become widespread overnight. ⛈️ Wednesday night: Thunderstorms and showers likely before 2 a.m., with another possible thunderstorm after 4 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 60%. 🌧️/⛈️Thursday: Showers with a high of 79 degrees. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the day. The chance of precipitation is 80%. ⛈️ Thursday night: Showers and thunderstorms. The chance of precipitation is 50%. ⛈️ Friday: Rainy with severe thunderstorms marginally possible after 2 p.m. A high temperature of 79 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60%. ⛈️ Friday night: A chance of thunderstorms and showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 60%. 🌤️/⛈️ Saturday: Mostly sunny with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Temperatures will reach around 78 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 30%. ☀️/⛈️ Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. Temperatures will cool to around 58 degrees. ☀️/ 🌧️Sunday: Sunny skies with a high temperature of 81 degrees. After 2 p.m., a 20% chance of showers. 🌦️ Sunday night: Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The chance of precipitation is 40%. National Weather Service predicts strong storms, days of rain ahead of mild race weekend

Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit Indianapolis during the afternoon and evening of May 20. The possibility of a tornado "cannot be ruled out," according to the National Weather Service. Rain showers will be constant through the afternoon. Isolated storms are possible before then, but forecasters don't expect widespread storms until about 4 p.m. High winds are the most pressing threat. Winds within storms could reach up to 50 mph, and gusts throughout the day will be more moderate, about 20 to 25 mph. Flooding and hail are also possible. Storms will end around 2 a.m. on May 21. Rain will continue to fall all day May 21 and May 22, but storms aren't predicted. Forecasters are keeping an especially close eye on the flooding risk because of the steady rain, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Drivers should be mindful of flooding risk along their commutes. "It's not uncommon for one place to get lighter amounts of precipitation and a place next door to experience flash flooding in a situation like this," Breon said. The sun will come back out on May 23. Race weekend so far looks calm and temperate, with only a 30% chance of rain on May 25. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. Severe storms could bring tornadoes, egg-sized hail on May 16. Here's the latest forecast

The National Weather Service has "good confidence" that strong storms will move into Indiana at around 5 p.m. on May 16. Tornadoes are possible, with winds between 60 and 80 mph. Hail about 2 inches wide — roughly the size of an egg — is also possible. The strongest weather will hit between 5-11 p.m. Severe storm risk is highest in southern Indiana, including Bloomington, Terre Haute and Evansville. Storms will follow an otherwise bright and sunny May 16. Indianapolis' temperatures could peak as high as 88 degrees. Skies will be clear during the day, but storm clouds will rapidly form in the late afternoon and early evening. That's because the high temperatures will weaken the layer of air that usually prevents severe storms. "It's kind of like if you shake up a Coke bottle," NWS meteorologist Aaron Updike said. "It's all fine if you keep the cap on, but as you start to warm near the surface, it starts to take the cap off." It's important to have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, especially if you're outside enjoying the summery day. Temperatures will drop to around 60 degrees during the storms, ushering in an otherwise mild weekend. May 17 will be 71 degrees and sunny, and May 18 will be 76 degrees and sunny. There's a slight chance of showers overnight on May 18, but no severe weather is predicted. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 🚫 What you should and shouldn't do when the power is out. Rain, hail, thunder and heat: what weather to expect in Indianapolis for the rest of the week

Indianapolis can expect rain for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service. The wet weather won't dampen the temperatures brought in by a heat wave expected to push temperatures into the high 80s over the next few days. While forecasters aren't ruling out the chance of severe storms on May 14, they aren't likely, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Rainfall amounts throughout the Indianapolis area will vary, with some zip codes receiving only a sprinkling while others will see as much as an inch of rainfall. A flood warning has been issued through 11:30 a.m. May 14 for "creeks, streams, low-lying spots on roads and construction zones, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring" for Marion, Johnson and Hamilton counties. May 15 will begin partly sunny, and temperatures will spike as high as 88 degrees. But be careful with enjoying the outdoors — there's a slight chance of severe storms beginning at around 3 p.m., and the risk increases at around 9 p.m. "The ones that do become severe have potential to produce large hail, strong winds - things of that nature," Breon said. Storms will continue overnight into the early morning hours, tapering off between 1-2 a.m. on May 16. The NWS doesn't currently predict tornadoes, but that could change as more information becomes available, according to Breon. The chance of severe weather will continue on May 16, though storms may stay south of Indianapolis. Hail will remain a possibility, but high winds will be a stronger concern. May 16 will see temperatures around 87 degrees. The days of heavy rainfall will bring "a ramped-up threat of potential isolated flooding," especially beginning on May 16. And while there's a chance of rain continuing through the weekend, May 15 and May 16 remain the primary severe weather threats. Breon said people should prepare for the hazards presented both by storms and by severe heat. Power outages brought on by the storms could knock out air conditioning, exacerbating heat stress, Breon said. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. 🚫 What you should and shouldn't do when the power is out. Sunday thunderstorms possible in Indianapolis. Here's what forecasters predict for Easter

If you're planning to take your family out for an Easter egg hunt on Sunday, bring your rainboots. The National Weather Service is calling for a wet weekend in the Indianapolis metro area. Saturday will continue to be rainy with a chance of thunderstorms before 2 p.m. Temperatures will reach a high of about 65 degrees. There's a 30% chance of light rain continuing overnight, according to the NWS. Saturday's scheduled Carmel Marathon was canceled as a result of the inclement weather, event organizers announced. Numerous other outdoor activities and sporting events across the metro area were either postponed or moved indoors due to heavy rainfall Saturday morning. The sound of tornado sirens awoke many Hamilton County residents shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday, as a strong thunderstorm brought lightning, heavy rain and a shelter warning from the NWS. "It looks like late tonight we'll probably have a break," NWS meteorologist Greg Melo said. The odds of heavy rain will increase toward daybreak on Sunday morning, and there's a chance of thunderstorms from about 8 a.m. until the early afternoon. The day will be warm, with a high of about 74 degrees. If kids want to go look for Easter eggs, "it looks like tomorrow afternoon would be a good time," Melo said. Another storm system will come in Sunday evening, again bringing the potential for more severe weather. If you're outside and hear a clap of thunder, move the festivities inside. There's a "non-zero threat" of a strong storm late Sunday, but it would likely be west of Indianapolis, Melo said. Easter morning will be warm with a high of about 74 degrees, but showers are expected to continue into the afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible after 8 a.m. Forecasters expect a break from the rain in the afternoon before showers pick back up in the evening. Sunday evening will be cloudy with scattered showers, and the temperature will drop to about 63 degrees. Thunderstorms are a possibility. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. 🚫 What you should and shouldn't do when the power is out. 🐶 Your neighbor left their pet outside.
