The Dolphins exercise patience as five players, highlighted by LB Tyrel Dodson, are re-signed

Patience. Patience. Patience. That appeared to be the Miami Dolphins' approach Wednesday as they officially re-signed several players including edge rusher Quinton Bell, defensive back Elijah Campbell, tackle Jackson Carman and receiver Dee Eskridge. Only one re-signing — that of inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson to a two-year deal worth $8.25 million, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz — made national news. 'Things didn't go as planned throughout 2024, I wouldn't have thrived in adversity without my support system,' Dodson tweeted Wednesday afternoon. 'As I look back I am extremely grateful for all the ups and downs. Even though it's all subjective.' Added Dodson: 'I am excited to continue my career in Miami! One day at a time. One play. One game. Better and better. Thank you Miami.' Meanwhile, the Dolphins' front office and coaching personnel — including general manager Chris Grier, coach Mike McDaniel and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver — headed to Athens, Georgia, as the University of Georgia held its pro day. They were able to watch safety Malaki Starks and outside linebacker Mykel Williams, both of whom could be options for the Dolphins with the No. 13 pick. Dodson joined the Dolphins about midway through the 2024 season after the Seattle Seahawks released the five-year veteran. He had three starts in Miami when fellow linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. went down with an injury and racked up 29 combined tackles as well as two interceptions. In total, he amassed 36 combined tackles, team-leading three picks and four pass deflections during his eight-game stint with the Dolphins. The inside linebacker even earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors following the Dolphins' second to last game against the Cleveland Browns. Dodson lead the team in combined tackles (15) and recorded an interception as well as a quarterback hit. 'I was just playing football,' Dodson said Jan. 1 after his career game. 'I was finally in a defense that everyone's on the same page, there's no gray area, it's black and white. I know where people are going to fit, I know how the d-line's going to play. It's fun when you come and play in a defense like that. Coach [Weaver] has done a great job.' 'We kind of expected that,' Weaver added after Dodson's Week 17 performance against the Browns. 'Fortunately I had some people in Seattle that could give us some really good intel, and all reports out of there was tremendous teammate, really good player.' An undrafted player out of Texas A&M, Dodson signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2019. The 26-year-old spent the following four seasons in Buffalo where he started 15 of a potential 59 games. Dodson then decided to sign with the Seahawks as a free agent in 2024. During his career, Dodson has registered 16 tackles for loss, three interceptions and more than 250 combined tackles. The Dolphins now have about $8 million in cap space following Dodson's deal, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. A simple contract restructure with veterans like Jordyn Brooks and Zach Sieler could instantly create more cap room. The franchise could also go to the bank of Tua Tagovailoa to generate roughly $19 million in cap space, however, they have clearly been rather hesitant to do so. With Dodson's deal presumably done, the Dolphins still have needs at several starting positions including offensive guard, defensive tackle and cornerback. The absence of a starting defensive tackle alongside Sieler is especially concerning considering the market has significantly depleted. There's still hope that Calais Campbell returns, however, he won't likely make that decision any time soon.

Dolphins re-sign inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson to two-year deal

The Miami Dolphins will bring back inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson. He will sign a two-year deal worth $8.25 million, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz. Dodson joined the Dolphins about midway through the 2024 season after the Seattle Seahawks released the five-year veteran. Dodson hadthree starts in Miami and racked up 29 combined tackles as well as two interceptions. In total, he amassed 36 combined tackles, three picks and four pass deflections with the Dolphins. How much will Tyrel Dodson get in free agency? Case for, case against Dolphins re-signing LB

Tyrel Dodson was brought to Miami to provide depth at linebacker behind Anthony Walker Jr. after he was surprisingly waived by the Seattle Seahawks in November. However, Dodson proved to be the better option for the Dolphins down the stretch, especially when he was given the chance to start. Dodson became a late season star for the Miami defense. Despite his limited time on the field, he led the entire Dolphins defense with three interceptions on the season. His best performance came in Week 17 in a win against the Cleveland Browns when he recorded 15 tackles and an interception, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Between his time in Seattle and Miami, Dodson totaled 107 tackles, three interceptions, five tackled for loss, two sacks, and four quarterback hits in 2024. The linebacker group is one of the many positions where Dolphins general manager Chris Grier will have to make tough decisions during the offseason. While Jordyn Brooks is under contract for two more years, Dodson, Walker, and Duke Riley are all set to become free agents this offseason. Dodson played in 2024 on a one-year deal worth $4.2 million. Considering he just had his best ever season, re-signing Dodson to another one-year contract might be a bit more expensive, but still feasible. The question is whether Dodson's performance with the Dolphins was enough for Grier to prioritize bringing him back? Case for re-signing Dodson Grier has a lot of work to do to get the Dolphins under the salary cap, but he should be able to find the money to lock down Dodson to another one-year deal. Dodson, 26, is entering his sixth season after his best as a pro. He was a force for the Dolphins defense in the tackling department and created turnovers. With Brooks under contract for two more years, re-signing Dodson would give Miami a pair of starters at inside linebacker. That would allow Grier to focus on Miami's other needs in the 2025 NFL draft. Dodson proved to be the best fit at inside linebacker last season alongside Brooks. Keeping Dodson will maintain stability for a linebacker group that has seen significant turnover the last couple seasons. In Dodson's three starts with the Dolphins, he proved to be an upgrade from both Walker Jr. and David Long Jr. (who was waived upon Dodson's arrival). Dodson should be able to solidify himself as a consistent starter for the Dolphins in 2025 if given a full offseason and training camp to work with the team. Case for letting Dodson walk Dodson's impressive 2024 campaign and strong finish with the Dolphins will catch the eye of teams needing linebacker help. The Rams, Broncos, and Buccaneers are three teams with more cap space than the Dolphins and a need at linebacker. That could end up pushing Dodson out of the Dolphins price range. There are also other paths the Dolphins could go to address the need. Maybe Grier decides to spend more money at a top free agent linebacker such as the 49ers' Dre Greenlaw or Chiefs' Nick Bolton. Or he could go with a cheaper option by re-signing Walker Jr and/or Riley. Considering the Dolphins already have Jordyn Brooks set to make a $11.5 million cap hit next season, Grier will probably look to the more cost-friendly options. Walker and Riley are among the cheaper options to re-sign, and they're even more familiar with the Dolphins personnel than Dodson. Otherwise, there are many other linebackers the Dolphins will get to choose from in free agency and the NFL draft. Prediction: The Dolphins will prioritize the interior offensive line and safeties before linebackers, which likely means Dodson will get a better offer elsewhere. Even though Dodson is coming off a career season and impressive finish with the Dolphins, the limited time he spent in Miami makes it difficult to prioritize bringing him back off of just a couple great performances. Grier has more pressing matters to address. It is likely Dodson spends 2025 -playing in another jersey. Prediction: Broncos sign Dodson to a one-year, $6.5 million deal

Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. earns yet another All-Pro honor

All-Pro Sting has been a saying for weeks now. Consensus All-Pro could be a new title added to Houston Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.'s vocabulary by this time next week. The third-year defensive back was named a first-team All-Pro by The Sporting News Thursday morning, adding to his accolades from a breakout 2024 season. After starting a career-high 17 games, the former No.3 overall pick posted career numbers in nearly every category, including total tackles (54), passes defensed (18) and tackles for loss (four). Stingley also posted his second consecutive season with five interceptions. Stingley's five interceptions were tied for the team-high with rookie safety Calen Bullock and ranked fourth-most in the NFL this season. His 18 pass breakups ranked second among defenders, trailing only Cleveland's Denzel Ward. According to NextGenStats, Stingley allowed the lowest passer rating (56.9) and lowest completion percentage (46.7%) among cornerbacks who played at least 400 coverage snaps this season. Stingley's shining moment came in Week 15 while covering All-Pro Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill. In the victory, he recorded five tackles, including two for loss, two interceptions and two passes defensed, becoming the first cornerback in NFL history to record two interceptions and two tackles for loss in a game. He would go on to be named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, marking the second of his career. This marks Stingley's second All-Pro honor of the year after also being named to the Associated Press All-Pro First Team, making him the first cornerback in franchise history to earn Associated Press and The Sporting News All-Pro First Team honors in the same year. Stingley was also named to the NFLPA's All-Pro roster, which is voted on by only active players.
