PETALING JAYA: Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili is quickly carving out a reputation as one of Malaysia's most promising young defenders at only 21.
But even as the spotlight grows brighter, the Terengganu talent remains rooted in humility.
The Kota Baru-born player enjoyed a breakout 2024–2025 season, making 36 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals.
Comfortable playing both as a centreback and leftback, Ubaidullah has proven to be a reliable and composed presence in Terengganu's backline.
His form earned him a call-up to the national team, and on May 30, he proudly earned his first senior cap in a 1–1 draw against Cape Verde.
A vital part of the Malaysia Under-23 squad, he has already amassed 24 appearances and recently featured in the AFF Under-23 Championship.
Despite the quick rise, Ubaidullah remains self-aware and mindful of the volatile nature of football.
'I am glad to know that the coaches and players recognise me that way – like staying disciplined and being humble. But I always remind myself that we will be down one day.
'People won't see us and will criticise us. It happens in football,' he said.
'But I always tell myself, if I am down, I won't be down all the time. And when I am doing well, I keep reminding and asking myself, how do I stay consistent? It is these self-reminders that keep me going.'
It is this maturity that sets Ubaidullah apart – on top of his natural defensive instincts and versatility.
His experience at the AFF U-23 tournament, while not yielding the desired results, offered important lessons.
'It was a lesson for us in the AFF. Every game was a new experience. We played well but couldn't convert our chances.'
He's now eyeing a stronger showing in the AFC U-23 Cup qualifiers next month while also keeping his feet firmly on the ground at club level.
'I'm fully focused on Terengganu and the Malaysian U-23 team. The transfer overseas – all players want it – but when the time comes, it will happen. I just want to follow the flow and see where it takes me,' said Ubaidullah had drawn interest from Thai clubs but decided to stay put with the Turtles for another season.
Terengganu, for their part, have had a solid pre-season, including matches against Cambodian clubs and a trip to Southern Thailand, which Ubaidullah says has helped boost morale.
'Terengganu's preparation is good. Commitment is great. That has motivated us.'
With his eyes set on becoming a regular starter, Ubaidullah is clear about his objectives.
'I want to be in the first eleven often – that's the goal. And for Terengganu, we hope to finish in the top five and go far in the cup competitions. Hopefully, we can lift a trophy one day.'
Terengganu will kick off their season by taking on Penang at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Aug 10.
