Magda Szubanski sets the record straight after viral Heath Ledger moment causes controversy online
Magda Szubanski has opened up over a decades-old viral red carpet moment with Heath Ledger. The comedian, 64, took to X this week to reflect on an impromptu red carpet meeting with The Dark Knight actor. Heath, who died in 2008, was being interviewed on the red carpet at the 2006 AFI Awards. Magda, who was in character as Sharon Strzelecki from the hit ABC comedy Kath & Kim, approached Heath mid-interview, before he spontaneously planted a long smooch on her lips. The impromptu moment, which went viral at the time, left Sharon red-faced and screaming on the red carpet. Magda reshared a post that featured the now-iconic clip, with the comment: 'Never forget the time Heath Ledger made a fan's day unforgettable.' The Babe actor was quick to set the record straight that it was no mere 'fan' that secured some rare lip time with the Oscar winner. 'I don't know how many times I have to correct the record and tell people it's not some rando fan!!'she wrote 'It's me as my character Sharon Strzelecki from Aussie sitcom Kath and Kim!! That said, Heath had no idea 'Sharon' was gonna scream like that and he responded like a true Sharon fan. He pashed her! Magda's fans were quick to share there thoughts on the incident, with one offering: 'That will go down in history as one of the funniest moments on tv.' Another summed up the sentiment of many with: 'It's a testament to how good a performance you gave as a fan that people believe it.' It comes after Madga gave some more insight into the incident back in 2023, answering a fan on X who asked if the meeting was staged. 'Nup! Heath had NO idea! But he was such a brilliant actor he improvised spectacularly!!' she replied. The interaction between the two inspired Heath to pitch a Kath & Kim storyline that sadly never came to pass. The actress told TV Week that Heath nearly played a stalker in pursuit of her iconic Sharon Strzelecki character on the ABC comedy series. The guest role was first discussed in 2006, just two years before the Oscar winning actor's tragic death. The day after their red carpet smooch, the Two Hands star rang Magda with a proposal. 'He'd had so much fun that he wanted to discuss a storyline for Kath & Kim, where he would become Sharon's stalker,' said the three-time Logie winner. Just two years later in 2008, the Perth-born star tragically died following a drug overdose. 'It would have been so great if he'd been in the show,' lamented Magda. Heath died in a New York City apartment on January 22, 2008, after accidentally overdosing following months of physical and mental exhaustion. The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after taking a fatal cocktail of drugs, leaving behind his daughter, who was two years old at the time. Michelle Williams, who was in a relationship with Heath from 2004 to 2007 after meeting on set of Brokeback Mountain, decided to raise Matilda away from the spotlight. Magda starred as the unlucky in love Sharon in the ABC hit comedy Kath & Kim from 2002to 2005 and subsequently on Channel 7 in 2007 and 2022. The sitcom, which also starred Jane Turner, Gina Riley, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn, went on to become one of Australia's most beloved comedies. The hit comedy also boasted a litany of high-profile guest stars including Kylie Minogue, Little Britain's Matt Lucas, Eric Bana, and cricket icon Shane Warne.

Aussie star sets the record straight as infamous viral video resurfaces
Don't miss out on the headlines from Awards. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australian comedy legend Magda Szubanski has set the record straight about a viral video of her circulating online that's so far amassed more than five million views – and some controversy. The video in question dates back to the 2006 AFI Awards, and it features late Aussie actor Heath Ledger being interviewed on the red carpet when the camera pulls back to reveal one particular worker at the event: Szubanski, dressed as her iconic Kath and Kim character Sharon Strzelecki. Magda-as-Sharon immediately loses it over the sighting of the twenty-something heart throb, and Ledger ups the ante by rushing over to plant a giant, prolonged kiss on her. Heath Ledger on the red carpet at the 2006 AFI Awards. Heath goes in for the pash. As the short clip finishes, an overwhelmed Sharon has collapsed face down on the red carpet. 'Never forget the time Heath Ledger made a fan's day unforgettable,' X account @cinesthetic captioned the video in a post shared Friday. There was no mention of the identity of the 'fan' or the fact Ledger was gamely participating in a live comedy skit for laughs. Magda waded in to set the record straight as the red carpet moment recirculated. Picture: Fiona Hamilton Some replied to the video to provide that much-needed context, but others outside of the reach of Kath and Kim's primarily Aussie fanbase voiced their concerns about Ledger's seemingly forceful behaviour to the 'fan.' 'This type of reaction should be discouraged,' one person commented under the clip. 'Woah that's assault brotha!' wrote another. 'Never forget the time Heath Ledger sexually assaulted a fan,' wrote another. On the same night, Ledger copped another kiss from Magda and Dannii Minogue. Enter Szubanski herself – who pointed out that this isn't the first time she's had to step in and provide some context for the video. 'I don't know how many times I have to correct the record and tell people it's not some rando fan!! It's me, Magda Szubanksi, as my character Sharon Strzelecki from Aussie sitcom Kath and Kim!' she wrote. 'That said, Heath had no idea 'Sharon' was gonna scream like that and he responded like a true Sharon fan. He pashed her!' And Szubanski (still in character as Sharon) was on hand later in the same award show to present Ledger with a Reader's Choice award, 'pash rash' dutifully applied as she bragged about their earlier red carpet encounter – and Ledger this time giving her a peck on the cheek as he accepted the gong. Having set the record straight once more, Szubanski finished her social media update with a simple send-off remembering 'beautiful Heath,' who died in early 2008 aged just 28, barely a year after their AFI Awards encounter. Karla Sofía Gascón Not Expected at BAFTAs as ‘Emilia Pérez' Co-Stars Set to Attend
Embattled 'Emilia Pérez' star Karla Sofía Gascón is not expected to attend Sunday's BAFTA awards ceremony despite being nominated for Best Actress. The actress, who has been under fire for past racist tweets over the last month, is not among the list of confirmed attendees announced by BAFTA on Thursday. Her 'Emilia Pérez' co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña will be presenting at the ceremony. This is the latest awards ceremony that Gascón will skip after previously opting not to attend the AFI Awards luncheon, Critics Choice Awards or Producers Guild Awards. It's unclear if she plans to attend the Oscars, where she's nominated for Best Actress, in March. Controversial, racist tweets from the actress resurfaced in late January, and her inflammatory opinions on Islam being permitted in Europe, COVID vaccines, George Floyd as a 'hustler' and more have all put her awards campaign at risk. The actress began deleting the years-old tweets as they became public one by one before deactivating her social media account in full. 'The truth is, these have been very, very difficult days,' Gascón said in a surprise CNN apology in early February, which the actress appeared to set up personally as it was not a scheduled news hit through her team nor Netflix. 'Some people have told me not to even think about attending the Oscars gala because maybe I shouldn't.' In her initial apology through Netflix's PR team, she shared: 'I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.' The post Karla Sofía Gascón Not Expected at BAFTAs as 'Emilia Pérez' Co-Stars Set to Attend appeared first on TheWrap.
