AFRY to support GBP's Arkansas paper mill modernisation project
American pulp and paper company Green Bay Packaging (GBP) has commissioned AFRY to provide engineering services for its paper mill modernisation project in Morrilton, Arkansas, US. The scope of work includes multidisciplinary design engineering, procurement support, and commissioning support for the balance of plant. This multiyear project is expected to boost the mill's operational efficiency and infrastructure. The modernisation effort will involve crucial updates to essential process elements such as the site's recovery boiler and biomass boiler systems. Moreover, GBP plans to implement an electric turbine generator, a key component of its decarbonisation initiative, which is expected to significantly cut scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. GBP Arkansas Kraft Division vice-president and general manager Brad Harville said: "We recognise that investing in future technologies is crucial for maintaining our leadership in innovation and excellence. "Given AFRY's established leadership in the pulp and paper sector and their impressive track record in large-scale projects, we are confident that this partnership will contribute significantly to the success of this strategically important initiative.' Additionally, the project encompasses the procurement of approximately 300 acres of land to facilitate future investments and growth, preparing the mill for long-term operations. AFRY's engagement with the project dates back to its early phases, contributing to conceptual studies and basic engineering. The anticipated result is a modernised, sustainable, and efficient paper mill that upholds industry leadership. AFRY process industries USA head John Boettcher said: 'We are extremely proud to be part of this modernisation project driving the transition towards a sustainable society. "Our global leading position and network of international experts in the pulp and paper sector, combined with our local presence, allows us to provide best-in-class expertise to our customers. AFRY's commitment to sustainability and circular solutions makes us the perfect partner for this project.' In December 2024, GBP commenced a multiyear project for the modernisation of its Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill to improve the mill's infrastructure. "AFRY to support GBP's Arkansas paper mill modernisation project" was originally created and published by Packaging Gateway, a GlobalData owned brand. AFRY to lead PEA and PFS for Estonia's Toolse phosphate project
The Geological Survey of Estonia has engaged AFRY, a Swedish-Finnish engineering and design company, to conduct a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) and pre-feasibility study (PFS) for the phosphate ore project in Toolse, Estonia. Estonia holds some of the largest phosphorite reserves in Europe. Phosphorite is mainly valued for its phosphorus, a key ingredient in agricultural fertilisers. The country's deposits also contain rare earth elements vital for high-tech sectors such as electronics, renewable energy and battery manufacturing. Tapping into these resources could position Estonia as a key supplier of critical raw materials, helping to cut import reliance and boost its economic standing, according to AFRY. AFRY will scrutinise various aspects of the phosphate mining project. It will explore the economic implications, environmental considerations and the socio-economic impact of phosphorite mining in Estonia, focusing on the production of phosphoric acid. Geological Survey of Estonia director Sirli Sipp Kulli said: 'AFRY has a solid Nordic engineering heritage with understanding of local conditions and the highest environmental and sustainability requirements. 'Through this study, we aim to build a comprehensive understanding of how Estonia's phosphorite and related resources can be utilised in a responsible and sustainable manner. Our focus is on ensuring that any potential extraction is in line with strict environmental and social considerations while providing long-term benefits to local communities, including job creation and regional economic development.' The Geological Survey and AFRY are considering both surface and underground mining methods for the project. Their joint efforts include assessing the feasibility of a beneficiation plant and the economic viability of the entire operation, from mining design to the production of merchant grade acid. Phosphate mining in Estonia could lead to job creation, attract investments and support the agricultural sector. Moreover, it would bolster Estonia's self-sufficiency in critical resources and enhance its strategic position in the global supply chain, according to AFRY. AFRY Mining & Metals head Janne Tikka said: 'We are proud to be selected as a partner for this important project that can have a remarkable impact on Estonia's economy. Drawing on our expertise, we support clients throughout the entire process, ensuring efficient and sustainable solutions. Our approach emphasises the connection between process technologies and environmental performance to drive responsible development.' In October 2024, Steel company SSAB selected AFRY as the main engineering partner for a fossil-free steel mini-mill project in Luleå, Sweden. AFRY secures Breganzona tunnel planning contract in Switzerland
Swedish company AFRY, within the Tram Ticino consortium, has secured the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland, a significant development for the local public transport network. AFRY, collaborating with engineering companies Pini and Lombardi, has been awarded the contract for the tunnel by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese. The new Tram-Treno network in Lugano will connect the city centre with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, aiming to reduce travel time and emerge as a more sustainable transport option. The redesign of the network is also anticipated to triple its capacity, from the current 7,500 passengers per day to 20,000 in the future. The underground station Lugano - Railway Station SBB, situated 40m below the new underpass, will become an intermodal hub, linking trams, trains, and city buses. This integration will connect the new network with regional and national transport systems. The first phase of the Tram-Treno network is targeted to commence operations by 2035. AFRY's involvement in the project is thereby expected to span the next ten years, with the planning contract valued at approximately Skr120m ($12.3m). AFRY Switzerland country manager Marcel Winter said: "We are pleased to be able to use our expertise to bring this complex inner-city project from the planning stage to life, thus contributing to a sustainable transport solution.' AFRY provides engineering, design, and advisory services. The company employs 18,000 staff across the industry, energy, and infrastructure sectors. In a related development, AFRY began the design of a waste-to-energy facility near Mělník in the Czech Republic in July 2024. The facility, to be constructed by CEZ Group, is set to convert municipal waste into heat for Prague, located roughly 30km to the south of the plant.
