Chennai: A Mahila Court in Chennai on Monday sentenced A Gnanasekaran, the sole accused in the 2024 Anna University campus rape case, to life imprisonment without the possibility of remission. The court ordered that he must serve a minimum of 30 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 on him. Mahila Court judge M Rajalakshmi handed down the sentence four days after convicting Gnanasekaran on 11 charges, including rape, abduction, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

Anna University rape convict gets 30-year jail, no remission
CHENNAI: The convict in the sensational Anna University sexual assault case, A Gnanasekaran (37), was sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without any remission of the jail term by the Chennai Mahila Court on Monday. Judge M Rajalakshmi said the perpetrator of such a grave offence cannot be shown any leniency. Gnanasekaran, a biryani stall owner, had raped the second-year engineering student on the Anna University campus on December 23, 2024, claiming himself to be a university staff member and had videographed the act. A total fine of Rs 90,000 was slapped on the convict, and the judge ordered the amount to be paid to the survivor. The court also ruled out the involvement of any other accused, widely attributed as 'sir.' The court announced the quantum of punishment on Monday four days after holding the accused guilty on all 11 counts of charges, including rape. 'The convict is sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission with a fine of Rs 25,000 under section 64 (1) (rape) of the BNS. In default, he has to undergo simple imprisonment for three months,' the judge said in her 207-page order. Pointing out that 37 other criminal cases were pending against Gnanasekaran, the judge said 'no leniency' could be shown to such an offender. The other charges he was punished with imprisonment are 329, 126 (2), 76, 127 (2), 75 (2), 76, 351 (3), 238 (b) of BNS and BNSS and Section 66 E of Information Technology Act for criminal trespass, wrongful restraint, using criminal force to disrobe a woman, and videographing a woman by violating her privacy.

Rape on campus rocks Anna University On the night of December 23 last year, a 19-year-old student of the Anna University in Chennai was raped in the university campus. The survivor was sitting with her male friend on the campus when Gnanasekaran, 37, confronted them, Indian Express reported, citing the Tamil Nadu police. He pretended to record the video of the pair and blackmailed them with the footage. Gnanasekaran, who ran a biryani outlet on a sidewalk near the campus, then went on to sexually assault the student in a secluded spot. He also filmed the rape on his mobile phone. Gnanasekaran tried to blackmail her by threatening to send the footage to her father and the college authorities if she failed to heed his demands. The student, however, did not stay silent. She, with the support of her family and college, approached the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station the next day. Gnanasekaran was arrested on December 25. PTI The incident triggered a huge uproar in the varsity over the safety of women on campus. The Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) organised protests, demanding justice for the survivor. FIR leaked, SIT formed After the First Information Report (FIR) with the survivor's details and identity was uploaded on the official website and then leaked to mediapersons, the case drew national attention. The Madras High Court took suo motu cognisance and chided the Tamil Nadu Police over the leak of the FIR and its tone that was perceived as shaming the survivor. It named history-sheeter Gnanasekar as the lone accused. As per NDTV sources, the convict had also confessed to carrying out thefts at several houses in Chennai during questioning. More than 100 sovereigns of gold and a luxury SUV were recovered from him. The issue took a political turn after BJP members shared photos of Gnanasekaran with Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. The DMK had dismissed the pictures, with CM Stalin reportedly asserting he was only a supporter, not a member of the party. A repeated offender like Gnanasekaran (the accused) was not on the rowdy list because of his connection with DMK leaders,' he alleged at a press conference last December. The AIADMK had held a road roko protest near the university campus in Chennai. Rape convict sentenced The Mahila Court in Chennai on Monday sentenced Gnanasekaran to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission. Last week, the court found him guilty on 11 charges, including rape, abduction, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. As per The Hindu, Mahila Court judge M Rajalakshmi said while pronouncing the sentence: 'For the charge under Section 64(1) [rape] of the BNS, you are sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission. Also, a Rs 25,000 fine is imposed under this section, and if you default to pay the fine, you will have to undergo simple imprisonment for three months.' Anna University sexual assault: Chennai court sentences convict A Gnanasekaran to 30 years in jail, fines him ₹90,000
The Chennai court sentenced A Gnanasekaran, the convict in the Anna University sexual assault case, to life imprisonment on Monday. Judge M Rajalakshmi said that the accused must remain in prison for at least 30 years without remission, news agency PTI reported. On 28 May, a Mahila Court in Chennai had pronounced Gnanasekaran guilty in the Anna University woman student sexual assault case, with the prosecution seeking 'maximum punishment' for him. The court awarded sentences in respect of each 11 charges proved by the prosecution against him. The sentences run concurrently, Mahila Court judge Rajalakshmi added, the report said. The judge, while convicting Gnanasekaran, said that he sought a lenient sentence claiming he was the sole bread-winner of the family and prosecution objected to it and sought maximum punishment. The Consultant counsel of Gnanasekaran, however, said that they will be appealing the court's sentence. According to a PTI report, BR Jayaprakash Narayanan said, '…We will be appealing this punishment of 30-year period. We will be going on appeal on the receipt of the judgment documents and valid papers." A second-year student of Anna University was sexually assaulted on the Anna University campus in December. After an investigation, the Chennai Police had arrested Gnanesekaran in connection with the case. The case came to light after the victim lodged a complaint before the All Women Police Station in Kotturpuram in Chennai on 23 December last year. The student alleged that an unidentified man had threatened and sexually assaulted her when she was talking to her friend on campus. The Mahila court framed charges against Gnanasekaran under various sections of the BNS, including sexual harassment, BNSS, IT Act and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. Hailing the court's decision, Congress MP Jothimani told IANS, '…Today, the punishment has been announced – 30 years of imprisonment for the culprit. The way justice has been served gives satisfaction not only to me but to every woman in the country, especially because the case was fast-tracked.' The sensational case had triggered a political row over Gnanasekaran's alleged connections with the ruling DMK in the state, although the party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, had in January said he was only a sympathiser and supporter, and not a member of the Dravidian organisation. After Gnanasekaran was convicted on 28 May, in a post on X, CM Stalin had hailed the state police, investigating officers, and government lawyers for the expeditious verdict in the Anna University sexual assault case. He also slammed the opposition parties, which had made allegations against the ruling DMK over the incident, and said attempts were made to play 'cheap politics'.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Mahila Court on Monday sentenced the sole accused in the Anna University rape case, A Gnanasekaran, to life imprisonment. He must undergo at least 30 years of imprisonment. On December 24, a complaint was lodged by the survivor at the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station (AWPS), alleging that Gnanasekaran threatened her when she was with a male friend on the university campus and then raped her. According to the prosecution, Gnanasekaran recorded the act on his mobile phone. As the identity of the victim was leaked in the public domain on December 26, the Madras High Court constituted an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. On February 24, the SIT completed the probe and filed a 100-page charge sheet before the jurisdictional magistrate. On March 7, the case was transferred to the Mahila Court, which framed charges against Gnanasekaran under sections 329 (criminal trespass), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 87 (abduction of a woman), 127(2), 75(2) read with 75(i), (ii), (iii), 76, 64(1) (rape), 351(3), 238(b) of BNS and BNSS, Section 66 of the IT Act, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.
