Take AHINDA members, poor along, they have supported Congress: Karnataka CM

MYSURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said the people of Mandya have stood by his leadership for decades, and advised district in-charge minister N Chaluvarayaswamy and others to take members of the AHINDA community and the poor along, since they have supported the Grand Old Party. Disputing the JDS' claims that it has contributed to the development of Mandya, Siddaramaiah said it was he who sanctioned a medical college and agriculture university for the district, and also released sufficient funds for the Mysugar factory. Without naming Union minister HD Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah said the medical college was sanctioned during the tenure of N Dharam Singh as chief minister. Speaking after laying the foundation for the DCC bank head office and Kuruba Sangha hostel, and unveiling a statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, he said the government gave Rs 50 crore assistance to the Mysugar factory and waived off power bills. He said the state produced 148 lakh metric tonnes of food grains during the previous years, and received copious rain, despite the BJP-JDS claiming that Karnataka is always affected by drought under Siddaramaiah's rule. Hitting out at the BJP for saying that the state would go bankrupt after implementing the guarantee schemes, Siddaramaiah said they have earmarked Rs 1.35 lakh crore for the development works and charged that the BJP is against social sector programmes, and not in favour of farmers, the poor, women, Dalits, minorities, and backward communities. Lauding the people of Mandya for contributing to food production, he said that the government has spent enough on irrigation projects and developments in all the taluks. Separately, the chief minister said he has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the Kuruba community hostel and assured funds to construct facilities for more than a hundred students from the backward communities.

With caste conundrum on backburner, Siddaramaiah likely to focus on admin

BENGALURU: Contentious caste issues have come in handy for Siddaramaiah to consolidate his position both as Chief Minister and a champion of AHINDA communities. The tabling of the Socio Economic and Educational Survey (SES-2015) report and the recommendation of the Backward Classes Commission to restructure the Backward Classes quota in the cabinet for discussion and commitment to implement the internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), were aimed at benefiting the AHINDA communities. With the backing of Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and LoP in Lok Sabha, to table SES-2015 and the Supreme Court's Aug.1, 2024, judgment allowing the states to implement the internal quota for the SCs, the CM was poised to strengthen his position. A section of castes within the SC category were opposing the internal quota for decades but Siddaramaiah sensed his opportunity with the apex court's judgment, according to political analysts. Even as the two dominant castes, Veerashaiva Lingayats and Vokkaligas, opposed the SES-2015 dubbing it as unscientific, the Centre's announcement of adding enumeration of caste as part of the national census is likely to dampen the is unlikely to disturb Siddaramaiah from his position, said a Congress legislator belonging to SC community. But other sources within Congress predict that once Siddaramaiah completed two-and-half years as CM in October, the issue of change of guard would resurface. The decision, however, would be in the hands of Rahul and AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge, also hailing from Karnataka.

OBC forum urges Rahul Gandhi to support caste census report

Mysuru: The Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum on Tuesday initiated a postal campaign requesting Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to address concerns regarding certain Congress MLAs who opposed the socio-educational report, commonly known as the caste census. The forum members sent letters to Rahul requesting his intervention in implementing the report. "For the first time in Karnataka, a comprehensive social, economic, educational, and political survey of all communities was conducted through the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes when Siddaramaiah was the CM for the first time in 2013. The primary objective of this survey was to understand the socio-economic and educational conditions of all communities, including the oppressed, with statistical data and to ensure social justice for these sections. This survey was conducted scientifically with a cost of approximately Rs180 crore. But now a few Congress MLAs are opposing it without any valid reasons," they alleged. "The report has now been presented and discussed in the cabinet meeting. However, it is deeply saddening that senior Congress MLAs such as Shamanur Shivashankarappa and a few others are opposing this report. Moreover, these MLAs and some leaders have made extremely derogatory statements about the report and the AHINDA communities (minorities, backward classes, and Dalits). They are demanding that the report be discarded entirely, which has caused great distress among all AHINDA sections," said forum president KS Shivaram. "The report consolidates statistical data not only on population but also on social, economic, and educational status of AHINDA communities. It has recommended reservation categorisation and an increase in reservation for various sections. Based on the statistics in this report, the govt will be able to provide political, social, and educational representation to AHINDA communities. However, it is truly unfortunate that some Congress MLAs themselves are opposing this," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo The forum requests Rahul's immediate intervention to instruct Congress MLAs to avoid creating unnecessary confusion regarding the report. AHINDA groups urge Rahul Gandhi to rein in Congress MLAs opposing caste census report in Karnataka

AHINDA groups have launched a campaign of writing letters to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urging him to caution party legislators in Karnataka from opposing implementation of the report of the Socio Economic and Educational Survey, popularly called 'caste census'. The survey was conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. Under the aegis of Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, the AHINDA groups have sent letters to Mr. Gandhi, who is also Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, through e-mail and post cards as part of the campaign, seeking his intervention in the matter. In its letter to Mr. Gandhi, the forum pointed out that the primary objective of the survey was to understand the socio-economic and educational condition of all communities through statistical data to ensure social justice for all. The survey, which was conducted scientifically at a cost of approximately ₹180 crore, reflecting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's social commitment and concern for the oppressed sections, has been presented and discussed in the Cabinet. 'However, it is deeply saddening that senior Congress MLAs, such as Shamanur Shivashankarappa and a few others, are opposing this report. Moreover, these MLAs and some leaders have made extremely derogatory statements about the report and AHINDA (an acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits),' the letter states. 'They are demanding that the report be discarded entirely, causing great distress among all the AHINDA sections,' the forum pointed out. The report consolidates statistical data not only on the population, but also on the social, economic and educational status of AHINDA communities, the letter states while adding that the caste census report has recommended categorisation of reservation while also increasing reservation for various sections. 'Based on the statistics in this report, the government will be able to provide political, social and educational representation to the AHINDA communities. However, it is truly unfortunate that some Congress MLAs are opposing this,' the letter states. Pointing out that AHINDA communities are the backbone of the Congress party support base, the letter reminds Mr. Gandhi that the party, in its manifesto, promised to implement the caste census across India. 'In this light, the AHINDA communities believe the Congress party will uphold the banner of social justice'. The forum has taken exception to the 'highly inappropriate' actions of a few senior party MLAs, who were going 'against this belief'. Contending that the behaviour of these Congress leaders in Karnataka is causing grave injustice to AHINDA communities, the letter warned that the party may face anger and backlash from these communities if implementation of the report is delayed or hindered. 'Hence, we appeal through this letter campaign that you kindly direct Congress MLAs and leaders in Karnataka to make room for implementation of the report, and correct minor flaws, if any,' the letter states. The forum's president K. S. Shivaram is among those who have written to Mr. Gandhi.

CM Siddaramaiah seeks confidential views as ministers to present views on caste survey report

BENGALURU: With the previous cabinet meeting chaired by Chief minister Siddaramaiah to discuss the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey report remaining inconclusive, now the attention has shifted to the upcoming cabinet meeting on May 2. Though a clearcut decision, whether to implement the report or go with a fresh survey, is unlikely even in the next cabinet meeting, there is curiosity over the opinions of ministers. Siddaramaiah played it tactfully by allowing his cabinet colleagues to express their opinions confidentially in writing. It may come in handy to play it safe to those who hail from the Veerashaiva Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities. They have three options -- express the opinions of their community, the community's organisation, and their own, according to analysts. 'I will express my personal opinion confidentially, besides that of my community and the Veerashaiva Mahasabha. I hope that any decision that will be arrived at will ensurie that no community feels let down,' Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre told reporters here on Friday. Other leaders are also expected to resort to a similar approach. Sources added that most of the ministers are unlikely to insist that the report be rejected. By using AI, district administrations are likely to segregate the taluk or Assembly constituency-wise caste census data, which would expose the strength of the AHINDA-Kannada acronym for the minorities, Backward Classes and Dalits. If leaders, who get elected on the AHINDA tag, oppose the survey, it will be seen as politically imprudent. 'So most of the Congress MLAs and ministers don't dare to go against the CM's decision,' a Congress leader remarked. Meanwhile, AHINDA MLAs, the sympathisers of Siddaramaiah, are eager to debate on the report if the government calls for a joint legislature session. It is mandatory as per the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission's Act, an expert said.
