DMK GC resolutions are to hide its failure: Murugan

Chennai: Union minister of state for parliamentary affairs L Murugan said the DMK had passed resolutions attacking the BJP during the party's general council meeting in Madurai in a bid to hide its failures. In a statement on Monday, Murugan said the Dravidian major was adopting diversionary tactics by condemning the BJP govt at the Centre. "CM M K Stalin seems to believe that if they pass resolutions condemning the BJP govt at the Centre, the public will forget about the corruption and failures of his own regime," Murugan said. During the general council meeting on Sunday, the DMK had passed multiple resolutions criticising the BJP from bringing the Waqf Act to withholding of funds and projects to TN. Murugan alleged there was widespread corruption in DMK govt which Stalin wants to hide. "The legacy of systematic corruption evolved under the DMK regime has evolved into brazen looting," he alleged adding the real aim of the general council meeting was to reaffirm that his son and deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin was the heir apparent and party cadres must blindly follow him. Meanwhile, BJP Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan criticised Stalin for his remarks that 'No matter which Shah visits Tamil Nadu, they cannot rule us,' made at the general council meeting. "If the DMK thinks TN is behind them, why is the CM always worrying about the AIADMK-BJP alliance," she asked.

Why DMK choose Madurai as venue for it's general council meeting

MADURAI: DMK's choice of Madurai for the general council meeting after 48 years, chief minister M K Stalin's colourful road show and his meeting with elder brother M K Alagiri all point to the party's renewed focus on south Tamil Nadu. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There are reasons for DMK's south push. The AIADMK-BJP front looks stronger than before after Nainar Nagenthran, a native of Tirunelveli with local heft, became BJP state president. In addition, ousted AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam and AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran too have considerable sway over voters, particularly thevars who form a sizeable votebank in the south. AMMK's inroads into the AIADMK vote share in 2021 assembly polls helped DMK win several seats. DMK is wary that this may not happen in 2026 as TTV would be part of the BJP- AIADMK front. "It has been a long time since we held the GC in Madurai. DMK's performance in the southern districts was satisfactory in the 2021 assembly elections. This time (2026 polls) we wish to further improve our performance in the southern districts," DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi told TOI. Speaking about the significance of choosing Madurai for conducting the general council meeting, CM Stalin, while addressing the functionaries during the meeting said, "This is the seventh time we are holding the general council meeting in Madurai, and it will serve as the stepping stone to our seventh victory in the state assembly elections." This was also the first to be conducted outside Chennai after Stalin became party president. The last time the GC was held outside Chennai was in Coimbatore in 2011. "Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election we organised a mega public meeting in Coimbatore since we wanted to win all the seats in western TN. Now we want to revitalise our rank and file in Madurai and down south. Hence, the temple city was chosen," said a party functionary. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It was part of the southern push that dairy development minister T Mano Thangaraj who was sacked from the post last year was reinducted into cabinet a month ago, he said. Yet another objective is to iron out internal feuds. Stalin calling on Alagiri might have signalled the end of the once intense factional rivalry in DMK, but the party is grappling with factionalism at local level in southern districts. Tirunelveli DMK mayor P M Saravanan has a running feud with his own party councillors. In Madurai corporation too, the mayor's husband P Ponvasanth had to be suspended a few days back for anti party activities. Stalin hopes the synergy generated by the general council would repair the rifts. While there was speculation that Alagiri might return back to action after his meeting with Stalin, party insiders said the chances of remote. "Neither is Alagiri in a mood to carry out party work, nor is thalaivar inclined to give him party post," said a senior party functionary.

"Rescued Tamil Nadu from the depths it had fallen into": CM Stalin at DMK General Council meet

Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 1 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin on Sunday said that the people are well aware of the 'circumstances' under which the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) came to power and 'rescued' the state from the crisis left behind by the previous AIADMK-BJP alliance government. Speaking at the DMK's General Council meeting held in Madurai, Stalin launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of 'trying to financially strangle' Tamil Nadu by 'withholding the rightful share of funds' due to the state. 'In the historically significant land of Madurai a land that exemplifies the ancient culture of the Tamil people we have convened this General Council meeting to make decisions essential for the future of Tamil Nadu, to devise strategies to confront and defeat the forces that surround and threaten the state, and to work tirelessly toward victory,' CM Stalin said. Drawing parallels between the gathering and a battle cry, he added, 'The moment I hear the call to battle, and when I see all of you gathered here, like tigers charging into the field with the speed to seize victory, I feel a surge of new energy.' He claimed that there is a growing 'wave of support' for the DMK government, alleging that some are trying to 'suppress' it. 'Whether in power or opposition, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) always faces the most criticism. However, more than a wave of opposition, it is a wave of support that is rising for the DMK government. Some are attempting to divert attention and suppress this support from coming to light,' he said. The Chief Minister said that the DMK government has been 'consistently fighting' against the Union government for their rights. 'The people know the circumstances under which we assumed office. We have rescued Tamil Nadu from the depths it had fallen into due to the previous AIADMK-BJP alliance government. Despite the numerous actions taken by the Union BJP government against our rights, we have been consistently fighting against them to this day. Even when they try to financially strangle Tamil Nadu by withholding the rightful funds due to us, we have overcome all those challenges and continued implementing welfare schemes for the people,' he said. Referring to the ongoing tussle between the State government and the Governor, Stalin said Tamil Nadu has achieved top ranks in development despite hurdles. 'Be it economic roadblocks, political hurdles, obstructions through the Governor, or attempts to snatch away our rights -- no matter how many obstacles the Union BJP government places before us, we have overcome them all and elevated Tamil Nadu to be the number one state in development across India today,' he claimed. With an eye on the 2026 Assembly elections, Stalin urged party leaders to stay alert to 'slanderous attacks' from the opposition. 'There are only a few months left until the 2026 Assembly elections. Hence, more than usual, the opposition will launch slanderous attacks against the DMK and its government. They will try to plant lies in the minds of the people under the guise of opinion polls. They will also spread these lies through social media. We must be prepared to counter all of this,' he said. Earlier in the day, the DMK passed 27 key resolutions at the General Council meeting held on a sprawling 90-acre site in Madurai's Uthangudi. One of the prominent resolutions condemned the Union Government for denying Tamil Nadu its rightful financial allocations. Over 10,000 party leaders, including Chief Minister MK Stalin and ministers, MPs, MLAs, and senior functionaries, participated in the gathering. This is the first time an event has been held in Madurai in 47 years, solidifying the party's influence in the southern region. Other major resolutions included a call to ensure the party's victory in the 2026 Assembly elections and to re-elect MK Stalin as Chief Minister, a declaration to observe June 3rd -- the birth anniversary of former CM M Karunanidhi -- as 'Classical Tamil Day,' and an expression of gratitude to Stalin for his efforts to uplift women in the State. Another resolution emphasised the need to publicise the DMK government's achievements among the people. (ANI)

AIADMK executive committee okays BJP pact, assures minorities that it would remain their protective shield

CHENNAI: Nearly three weeks after the revival of the AIADMK-BJP alliance, the executive committee (EC) of the AIADMK, which met in Chennai on Friday under its presidium chairman Thamizhmagan Hussain, 'wholeheartedly endorsed' the decision. A resolution passed at the meeting said the alliance was a strategic move to prevent division of opposition votes and dubbed the ruling DMK as the common political enemy that must be unseated in the 2026 Assembly elections. Interestingly, one of the resolutions sought to reassure minorities, saying that the party would always remain their protective shield. The party cited its opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act in Parliament as proof of its commitment. Of the 16 resolutions passed, a majority of them were critical of the DMK government over its alleged failures across fronts. Sources said the meeting proceeded without dissent as AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami had held prior discussions with senior leaders to explain the rationale for the alliance. One of the resolutions hailed Palaniswami for forging a 'mega alliance' and crafting a sound electoral strategy to reclaim power in 2026. The committee also expressed gratitude to the union government for announcing a caste census and allocating funds for the 'Nadanthai Vazhi Cauvery' scheme conceived during the previous AIADMK regime, while accusing the DMK of inaction on key water conservation projects.
