India's demand for AI professionals to hit 1 million by 2026: Report

NEW DELHI: India is set to witness a sharp rise in demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) professionals, with reports projecting a need for one million skilled workers by 2026. As the nation aims to become a $23–35 trillion economy by 2047, higher education—especially in engineering—is being reshaped to keep pace with the fast-changing job market driven by AI, automation, and innovation across disciplines, as detailed in the report 'India's AI Revolution: A Roadmap to Viksit Bharat', issued by the Union Ministry of Electronics & IT. Engineering is at the center of this shift. According to the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the number of approved seats for 2024–25 has increased to 14.9 lakh, a 16% rise over the past four years. This growth is mainly due to a surge of over 50% in seats for Computer Science and related fields like AI/ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain, reflecting strong demand from industry. India's technical education sector is adopting cross-disciplinary and industry-integrated approaches to develop engineers proficient in coding, creation, collaboration and innovation leadership. The evolution from STEM to STEAM, incorporating Arts, is becoming prevalent, combining technical expertise with design thinking, communication, psychology, law and business principles. The India Skills Report 2024 by Wheebox predicts the country's AI industry will reach $28.8 billion by 2025, growing at 45 per cent CAGR. The report indicates that AI-skilled professionals have increased 14-fold from 2016 to 2023, positioning India amongst the top five rapidly growing AI talent centres, alongside Singapore, Finland, Ireland, and Canada. "The surge in demand for AI professionals' stems from rapid technological progress. As AI reshapes productivity, operations, and innovation, preparing a future-ready workforce is imperative. At SRM Institute of Science and Technology, we offer interdisciplinary programs in areas like Medical Engineering, ECE with Data science, Biotechnology (Food Technology) and AI-ML Embedded Systems to bridge emerging domains. Our strong academia-industry partnerships provide students with real-world exposure and global competitiveness," Dr Kathiravan Kannan, Director, SRM Group of Institutions, Ramapuram, Chennai and Tiruchirappalli told news agency ANI. Faculty in private engineering colleges in Coimbatore contend with stagnant salaries

Left with limited options, faculty in even leading private engineering colleges in Coimbatore region contend with salaries that have been stagnant for years, due to which the attrition rate is also limited, it is learnt. The maximum salary offered for a faculty in Computer Science department does not exceed ₹60,000 a month. Those in Mechanical and core branches receive monthly salary between ₹20,000 and ₹30,000. The scenario is more worrisome in colleges of average standing, a faculty member pointed out requesting anonymity. The AICTE, according Anna University sources, specifies payment of faculty salary as per its norms, but the implementation remains a far cry, a functionary of a college management acknowledged. The Anna University does determine compliance of the affiliated colleges to AICTE norms in terms of teacher-student ratio, but has no authority in enforcing salary payment, university sources said. 'Exploitation' of teaching staff in the private engineering colleges does not augur well for meeting quality parameters in higher education, M. Chidambaram, former Director of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi, said. Prof. Chidambaram, who had filed a Public Interest Litigation in Delhi High Court on the issue last year, said a substantial proportion of faculty members were exploited and were not paid even the basic minimum prescribed salary (AICTE Pay Scale), got no salary slips, had prolonged working hours, and faced forceful retention of the original documents. Prof. Chidambaram had referred to a report of the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute on the condition of faculty in private engineering colleges in his PIL. It was unfortunate that the AICTE had refused to take desired measures. The AICTE had formulated the All India Council for Technical Education Pay Scales, Service Conditions and Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff-(Degree) Regulation, 2019, for granting 7th Pay Scale to the faculty members in the technical institutions along with other benefits, i.e., increment, promotion, health insurance, pension, leave, training and incentives, Prof. Chidambaram said. The onus was on the AICTE to strictly enforce the AICTE (Grant of Approvals for Technical Institutions) Regulations, 2020, he said. The PIL, Prof. Chidambaram said, also sought directions for increasing investment upon technical educations to meet the requirement of the vast country like India, including measures such as increasing the number of engineering seats, appointment of sufficient faculty, infrastructure, research and development in the engineering colleges.

JSS STU launches computer science prog for students with disabilities

Mysuru: In a first for Karnataka, JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU) will launch an exclusive BE computer science and technology programme tailored specifically for students with hearing and orthopaedic disabilities. The course will commence from the upcoming academic year at the SJCE campus, announced Harish, registrar of JSS STU, on Thursday. The initiative aims to bridge a critical gap faced by differently-abled students, particularly those who completed a three-year computer science diploma at JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled. Many of these students found it challenging to continue higher education due to a lack of inclusive learning environments in mainstream engineering colleges. "Recognising their struggles, we approached the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for permission to start a dedicated course. With the support of both the State and Union govts, the AICTE has now approved the programme," said Harish. The course will initially admit 30 students and is open to applicants from across Karnataka and other parts of India.

Employees' body seeks AICTE probe into ‘irregularities' in some engineering colleges in A.P.

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Technical and Professional Institutions Employees Association (APTPIEA) have urged the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to look into 'gross irregularities' resorted to by some of the private deemed to be universities in the State. In a letter addressed to the AICTE Chairman T.G. Sitharam on Thursday (May 29), the association president M.V. Bramhananda Reddy alleged that some institutions were resorting to practices that compromised the integrity and quality of technical education. They alleged that certain universities offered online and distance learning programmes without proper regulatory approval or in a manner that violated the University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE norms. Accusing them of manipulating student attendance, internal assessments and backdate registrations to produce dishonest academic outcomes, Mr. Reddy said some institutions claimed inflated placement statistics and misled stakeholders, hiding the actual employment status of their graduates. They often imposed hidden charges under various heads, thrusting a huge financial burden on students, he alleged. The association leader said many Ph.D. candidates had reported lack of proper guidelines, alleged unethical publication practices and delay in the evaluation of their thesis, undermining the spirit of quality research. The association leader urged the AICTE to probe the academic credibility of such institutions and take appropriate action against those found violating the rulebook. The association leaders have also alleged irregularities in the inspection procedures in engineering colleges affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)-Kakinada. They said it had come to their notice that a college principal held a fake Ph.D and continues to be shown as an M. Tech student in regular stream from the same college. The members said the college also did not have sufficient ratified faculty as per the requirement. Accusing irregularities in allocation of Ph.D guides and in grant of autonomous status to colleges without following due diligence, they demanded that the authorities concerned conduct a re-inspection of the colleges that were granted autonomy under JNTU-Kakinada.
