President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday attended the first convocation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Kalyani in Nadia district. According to the authorities, a total of 48 MBBS students, who were admitted in 2019, and nine Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) students, received their degrees. The PDCC cohort includes four scholars from 2023 and five from 2024. President Murmu, who was the chief guest, while addressing the event, said that doctors, conscious of their social responsibilities, have played an important role in the development of the nation. 'This is the first convocation of the institute and I congratulate everyone who are passing out today. May your dreams come true. You are the first batch and it is through you that AIIMs will be recognised, you will be carrying the lineage of AIIMs. It is your responsibility to keep everyone healthy,' President Murmu said. 'Doctors have a bigger role than the government and stakeholders in controlling health problems…,' the president said, adding, 'The average life expectancy, which was only 32 years at the time of independence, has now more than doubled to about 70 years. There has been extraordinary progress in the field of vaccination in last few years. Many diseases have been eradicated.' The event was attended by Governor C V Ananda Bose, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, AIIMS Kalyani executive director Dr Ramji Singh. On Thursday, President Murmu will attend the first convocation of AIIMS, Deoghar, in Jharkhand and on August 1, she will attend the 45th convocation ceremony of IIT (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
