The Future Of Samsung TVs: Samsung Exec Talks Picture Quality, Features And AI
Inbeon Kim is a Corporate Vice President at Samsung, where he's Head of R&D Innovation. His knowledge of Samsung TV is especially comprehensive, so when I was offered the chance to interview him, I was keen. Samsung Neo QLED 8K When it comes to TV, great picture and sound are the primary concerns for most people, I suggest. So, how does Samsung make sure its cool extras, like live caption translations and generative wallpapers get across to customers? 'We understand that most consumers prioritize picture quality above all, which is why we're always striving to deliver the best,' Kim says. 'All of our screens offer vivid and realistic colors with incredible brightness, seen best with our Neo QLED TVs powered by Quantum Dot technology, delivering immersive and lifelike visuals. At the same time, people want their TVs to do more—make their lives easier, connect seamlessly to other smart devices, and provide creative functionality and benefits. We have innovated for years to challenge users to rethink what a TV should be. No longer is it just the black square in your living room… it's an intelligent partner that helps consumers simplify their lives.' Samsung is obviously doing something right as it's been the number one TV manufacturer worldwide for 19 years and was the first to introduce the Smart TV, Kim says. 'We believe that like Smart TV capabilities, AI technology is set to become the next TV experience to quickly evolve from innovation to expectation. We know that consumers expect more convenience, simpler connectivity, and smarter functionalities than they ever did before and our investment in AI is providing this,' Kim believes. And he thinks that AI can be used to improve picture quality further, 'making visuals even more vibrant,' as he puts it. 'A great example is our 8K AI Upscaling Pro and AI Motion Enhancer Pro features, which work together to sharpen low-resolution content while reducing distortion and blur. These are especially helpful for sports fans to minimize ball distortion and blurring, delivering a clearer, more immersive experience. It all happens seamlessly in the background, powered by AI,' Kim says. AI also has benefits for the sound, Kim says. 'AI ensures viewers never miss a moment of their favorite shows. For example, during an intense action sequence where dialogue can get lost in background noise, AI Voice Amplifier Pro and Adaptive Sound features intelligently minimize distractions while enhancing speech clarity so that viewers can follow the story without missing out on the action.' Live subtitle translation is also part of the enhanced service. 'It breaks down language barriers, enabling everyone to enjoy high-quality content, while generative wallpaper brings AI-generated artworks to life on the screen, tailoring them to unique personal tastes and adding to the versatility of the TV. The features are all intuitively designed,' he insists. Moreover, AI plays a crucial role in enhancing and streamlining the TV experience, Kim says. 'It intelligently adapts to the user's needs by recognizing the type of content being viewed—whether it's video playback, gaming, or document editing—and automatically optimizes the picture quality accordingly, delivering a seamless and immersive viewing experience without the need for complex manual adjustments.' Samsung is known for saying that open is better, that is, that closed systems aren't as good. 'Openness is a fundamental principle at Samsung, as it provides consumers with more choices. To support third-party developers in integrating their apps into Samsung's TV ecosystem, we provide a robust development environment built on Tizen OS. This open approach has led to innovations like Samsung Gaming Hub and Microsoft Copilot, now available on Samsung's latest TVs and Smart Monitors,' Kim explains. I ask about how TVs are getting bigger but not everyone wants a massive black rectangle in their room. 'There is a clear trend toward ultra-large TVs, while at the same time, there is also demand for flexible screen solutions that can be used anywhere. We introduced the Freestyle and Premiere series [which are both projectors] to offer new experiences for customers as their lifestyles evolve. The Freestyle is for active consumers who are always on the move but still want a high-quality viewing experience anywhere. Our latest Freestyle is compact yet able to project up to a 100-inch screen anywhere; you can also combine two Freestyle projectors to create an extra-wide display up to 160-inches, making it perfect for movies, gaming, or outdoor adventures. Meanwhile, The Premiere caters to the consumer who expects superior technology in their projector for high-quality experiences at home. At CES First Look this year, we also introduced The Premiere 5, featuring interactive touch capabilities, allowing users to interact with the projector in exciting new ways.' Finally, it's easy for companies to become complacent when they hit number one. How does Samsung challenge itself, I wonder? 'We are intentional about every feature we include in our TVs, continuously assessing the latest trends, priorities and needs through ongoing feedback from consumers,' he says, adding that picture quality is still paramount. 'We're continuing to innovate to create brilliant visuals: our Neo QLED 8K TV is powered by our most advanced, powerful, and intelligent processor to date, the NQ8 AI Gen3. It processes vast amounts of picture and sound data in real time while simultaneously optimizing energy consumption. It's a game-changer when it comes to viewing experiences and signals our continued investment in great picture for category leadership for the next 19 years.'
