AITUC stages protest against contract jobs for sanitation staff
Trichy: The AITUC staged a protest outside the district collectorate on Thursday, demanding that the state government regularise the appointments of sanitation workers employed on contract across Tamil Nadu.
The demonstration followed the recent mass protest by Chennai Corporation sanitation workers against the privatisation of solid waste management (SWM). AITUC Trichy urged the government and urban local bodies to ensure job security for conservancy workers and stop outsourcing core civic services. "The practice of outsourcing solid waste management and sanitation work should end. Local bodies should not privatise such basic civic services," said K Suresh, general secretary of AITUC Trichy. The protesters condemned the late-night arrest of striking sanitation workers in Chennai and called on the government to drop charges against them. They also demanded the correction of salary discrepancies and the fixing of minimum wages for all sanitation workers employed by municipal corporations and other urban local bodies, including those hired for SWM activities through outsourcing agencies.
