JOHOR BARU: To mark their close ties, Malaysia's border agency gifted its Singapore counterpart with a cake and white orchid in conjunction with the island republic's 60th National Day.
The symbolic handover was done in front of the Woodlands Checkpoint on Saturday.
Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) assistant commander Vimala Ramalinggam headed a team of officers from the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (BSI) to present the 6kg cake and potted orchid to Woodlands Immigration and Checkpoints Authority assistant commander Tan Zhaofeng.
The orchid is Singapore's national flower. The island republic celebrated its 60th National Day on Saturday.
Every year, the two agencies commemorate each other's national day celebrations.
They also organise regular visits and exchange programmes to enhance cooperation in managing one of the world's busiest land crossings.
Besides BSI in Johor Baru, the other land checkpoint with Singapore is the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ complex at the Second Link.
Traffic has been heavy in Johor since Friday due to the long weekend holiday in Singapore.
