Shoppers cut down on plastic waste with 'amazing' soap that 'lasts way longer than shower gel'

It may seem a bit 'old school', but like vinyl records and ballet flats, soap bars are experiencing a bit of a revival. One brand, in particular, has been lauded by shoppers as a plastic-free alternative to shower gel that lasts longer, and leaves their bathroom 'smelling like an expensive spa'. Shower gels generally come in bulky plastic bottles, which usually clutter up the bath edge, disrupting the tranquil ambience of the bathroom. To combat this visual chaos, consumers are swapping shower gels for bar soap - a more sustainable option that not only smells good, but looks good, too. The independent brand Òir - pronounced oar, translating to 'golden' in Gaelic - is crafting handmade soaps that are becoming popular among those aiming to reduce plastic use without sacrificing quality or luxury. They're currently offering a discount, perfect for first-time customers or those looking to save on festive expenses, reports the Daily Record. To incentivise more people to make the switch, Òir is presently offering 15% off any purchase with a unique discount code. Additionally, free delivery is available on all orders over £30. Valid until 30 September, anyone who uses the code OIR15 will see their total cost reduced at checkout. Each bar of Scottish-made soap is priced at £12.50 and boasts an entirely plastic-free, vegan, and palm-oil-free composition, with the fragrance derived solely from essential oils. The cruelty-free soaps are visually appealing too, featuring exquisite designs coloured with natural clay and activated charcoal. They come in various aromas, including a scent-free option for those with sensitive skin, and Òir's soaps are crafted to be durable, outlasting your typical bottle of shower gel. Their formula, enriched with cocoa butter and shea butter, is described as 'super moisturising' and ensures the skin remains hydrated. In other news, AKT has introduced a body wash concentrate retailing at £26, which includes skin-balancing prebiotics, moisture-retaining olive squalane, and enriching vitamin E. This waterless concoction offers a triple-concentrated blend that comes to life once you hit the shower. Meanwhile, Wild is marketing their eco-friendly refillable shower gels, starting at £15.40 for a case and refill. The cases are priced at £12 and are designed to be replenished with your preferred scented shower gel for many years. Òir's soaps have been receiving rave reviews from customers who adore the fragrances. A customer commented on the lemongrass, clary sage, rosemary hand and body soap: "Bathroom smells like an expensive spa. Stopped using shower gels years ago and tried various soaps and this is by far my favourite so far. Smells great, lathers well, not drying on skin and lasts. "I use Oir soap every day," shared a fan of the cedarwood, clary sage, rose geranium, vetiver hand and body soap. "It smells amazing, and to know that it's free of nasties, cruelty-free and sustainable makes it the perfect soap. It lasts way longer than a shower gel and smells sooo much better." One customer expressed their reluctance to repurchase the soap due to its large size, stating: "The scent is really good, but I'm finding the size a bit big for my little hands. So much so I won't be buying any more." However, the brand suggests slicing the bars in half before use for easier handling. Another shopper, who enjoys the peppermint, lavender, patchouli, tea tree hand and body soap, said: "This is the second Oir hand and body soap I've had. Got one for Xmas and just had to have another. Smells stunning and lasts. Moisturising too. My shower room smells of it too. Will definitely be sticking with Oir." Whether you're a newcomer to bar soaps or a seasoned user, aiming to reduce plastic waste at home, mindful of what you're applying on your skin, or simply seeking thoughtful and sustainable Christmas stocking fillers, Òir could be an excellent choice.

NUMed sets regional benchmark with UKMLA-ready MBBS curriculum

AS global healthcare systems continue to converge on standards of excellence and mobility, the ability to practice medicine across borders is becoming increasingly desirable. One initiative that exemplifies this shift is the introduction of the United Kingdom Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA) – a standardised exam required for all medical graduates wishing to practice in the UK. Recognising its global relevance, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) has integrated the UKMLA into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) curriculum. Students are consistently exposed to the UKMLA format throughout their studies. In early 2025, the university's Year 5 students sat for the UKMLA exams, achieving a pass rate of almost 100%. MBBS graduate Bhumika Jethnani noted that NUMed had prepared them well since the beginning. 'Our lecturers did a great job at ensuring we were ready for the two components of the UKMLA,' she shared. Understanding the UKMLA The UKMLA was officially implemented in the 2024/25 academic year by the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) to ensure that all doctors – no matter where they received their medical education – meet a consistent high standard of medical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competency. The exam consists of two segments. The first is the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) which uses a computer to evaluate the candidate's ability to apply higher level thinking based on real-life scenarios. The Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA), on the other hand, examines their clinical and communication skills with real and simulated patients. Bhumika says NUMed lecturers prepared them well for both components of UKMLA. Both components ensure that newly qualified doctors entering the UK healthcare system are well-prepared for practice, while also setting the benchmark for high-quality, outcome-based medical education across the world. 'When the UKMLA was introduced, we took proactive steps to adjust our curriculum, such as rearranging the courses to make sure that our students are thoroughly prepared for the assessment's format and expectations,' explained NUMed's clinical affairs dean Professor Dr Harinarayan Radhakrishna. Regional trailblazer From the first year, students are introduced to the types of questions and scenarios they might face in the AKT and CPSA. This allows them to build familiarity and confidence, reducing the pressure of high-stakes exams later on. 'Our students are consistently exposed to the single best answer (SBA) format required by the UKMLA, as our exam questions are carefully designed to align with this standard, featuring clear, straightforward lead-in statements. 'We are proud to be the first university in the region to play a direct role in the development of the assessment. 'Several of our academic staff are actively collaborating with the UK team to ensure the smooth delivery of the assessment, contributing their expertise to enhance its effectiveness and alignment with clinical education standards,' Prof Harinarayan elaborated. 'At NUMed, the UKMLA functions as the final examination for MBBS students. This means that by the time you graduate, you've already passed the UKMLA – giving you confidence that you are fully prepared to enter the global medical field,' he added. ATOM Sinks 5% Amid Altcoin Weakness, Faces Key Support Test

Cosmos Hub's ATOM token suffered a steep decline over the past 24 hours, falling from $5.08 to $4.82 as institutional participants intensified liquidation activity. The 5.1% drop was accompanied by a surge in trading volume, with a peak of 7.73 million tokens changing hands during a particularly heavy sell-off between 09:00 and 14:00 UTC on July 23. The sharp move reinforced resistance around the $5.07-$5.13 range, while accumulation interest surfaced in the $4.78-$4.88 zone, offering tentative support. However, persistent breakdowns below the $5.00 threshold highlighted ongoing distribution pressure that could challenge recovery attempts without sustained buying momentum. During the final hour of trading on July 23, ATOM experienced pronounced volatility. The price tumbled from $4.90 to a session low of $4.78 before rebounding to $4.81. This recovery, while notable, came on declining volume—potentially signaling exhaustion among short-term buyers. Akash Network (AKT), another Cosmos-based project, continues to show strength in long-term forecasts, with a potential target of $6.19 in 2025, contrasting ATOM's current technical fragility. Technical Analysis Highlights 24-Hour Movement: ATOM fell 5.1% from $5.08 to $4.82 with a total range of $0.35 (6.8%). Peak Liquidation: July 23, 09:00-14:00 UTC saw volumes surge to 7.73M, well above the 1.11M average. Critical Support: $4.78-$4.88 zone showing accumulation on elevated volume. Intermediate Resistance: $4.98-$5.00 level faced multiple rejections. Institutional Pressure: Sustained breakdown below $5.00 signals distribution activity. Intraday Volatility: July 23, 13:10-14:09 UTC saw a sharp dip from $4.90 to $4.78, followed by a rebound to $4.81. Rebound Weakness: Recovery to $4.81 occurred on declining volume, suggesting possible exhaustion. Crisp, fresh and perfect for summer, Hay Fever opens with Crisp apple, marmalade, boasts heart notes of a splendid English garden, Earl Greyand plump apricots, and finishes with cashmere, soft leather, and generational wealth. What bliss! shop £21w3 Inspired by the dazzling Noël Coward play of the same name, the new Hay Fever deodorant is a seductive summer scent that'll have people thinking you've just spritzed on some expensive perfume. Hay Fever transports you to an English country garden in the roaring 1920s. Think: high tea, high drama, and lots of marmalade. This triple threat formula combines an opening number of crisp apple and marmalade, followed by an encore of earl grey and apricots, leading to a grand finale of cashmere and soft leather. An iconic homage to Noël Coward's infamous comedy of manners, this fragrance is your backstage pass to a particularly English kind of summer – filled with roses, marmalade, mischief and the occasional dramatic exit. And truly, this deodorant smells amazing , truly like a sophisticated and refined perfume rather than the medicinal and powdery 'deodorant' smell of times gone by. Enjoy instead the smell of plump fruits, Earl Grey tea and cashmere with just a sprinkling of generational wealth. Did someone say bliss? 'Our new deodorant fragrance was designed to capture the spirit of a quintessential British summer — languid, sun-dappled, and ever so slightly unhinged,' say AKT founders Ed Currie and Andy Coxon. 'And what better muse than Noël Coward's Hay Fever? …and, in Ed's case, beastly seasonal allergies!' Tested and perfected on the stage by the people who perform there, AKT Deodorant Balm is infused with AKT's exclusive DEO-BARRIER COMPLEX™, the super-special secret to the brand's unwavering success. This Deo-Barrier Complex has been designed to transform from a skin-nourishing balm into a dry, invisible powder that actively cleanses, deodorises and absorbs perspiration for persistent protection, keeping you sweat-free, even in the summer sun, all day long. This natural deodorant really does look after your armpits, too – made without pore-blocking aluminium unlike many standard deodorants, instead utilising natural ingredients that work to moisturise the skin while eliminating odours and keeping you dry all day. Yup, zero aluminium, zero phthalates, zero compromises. And you can really feel the goodness. The balm glides on easily (they recommend applying a pea-sized amount to clean underarms each day), hydrating and nourishing the skin without greasiness or wetness, meaning you don't have to wait to throw on your outfit. And it doesn't get all over your clothes, either, meaning no crusty, yellow armpits in this joint. Game-changer. But, especially with the new Hay Fever scent, the magic really lies in the stunning fragrances. More Trending The brand collaborated with leading experts in fragrance to curate each deodorant balm like a fine fragrance, each named like 'scenes' as a homage to their theatre roots. These include SC.01 Orange Grove, SC.02 After Thunder and SC.03 The Onsen. But I have to say, Hay Fever is our absolute favourite. As AKT put so beautifully in its own words: 'Hay Fever is not just a fragrance, it's a standing ovation to British eccentricity, queer legacy, and the sheer joy of a good scandal in the garden!' What bliss! Shop this limited-run deodorant fragrance while you can – this is truly one for the ages. Tribal Ministry urged to delete 'Any Kuki Tribes' category from Manipur's ST list

Two Manipur-based organisations have urged the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to delete the 'Any Kuki Tribes' category from the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list in the State as it allegedly allows "foreigners to claim rights" of the indigenous people and "poses a threat to their land and resources". Also read: On delisting some Kuki-Zomi tribes in Manipur | Explained In a memorandum to the Ministry, the two organisations - Thadou Inpi manipur and Meitei Alliance - stated that "the appeal aligns with the official position of the Government of Manipur, which, following cabinet decisions on October 19, 2018 and January 2, 2023, formally recommended the deletion of 'Any Kuki Tribes' category. "The vague nature of 'Any Kuki tribes' (AKT) allows foreigners to claim tribal rights in Manipur. This poses a serious threat to land, resources, and constitutional privileges of pre-existing scheduled tribes," the two organisations claimed in the memorandum. They also alleged, "AKT has no unique language, separate cultural heritage, and geographical isolation, all of which are the basic criteria for Scheduled Tribe recognition under Article 342 of the Constitution of India. It fails every benchmark and only serves to sow ethnic discord and legal confusion." The two organisations also claimed that the category 'Any Kuki tribes' was inserted into the Scheduled Tribes list of Manipur in 2003 through "politically motivated and non-transparent means". "Unlike any of the Scheduled Tribes of Manipur that are linguistically and culturally distinct, AKT is an ambiguous and arbitrary insertion without a legitimate basis. AKT is not accepted or recognised by any of the Scheduled Tribes of its existence has only exacerbated ethnic tension and undermined social harmony," the memorandum said.
