Is this £26 body wash worth the money?
What's the story? In 2018, West End performers Ed Currie and Andy Coxon, unable to find a product powerful enough to deal with the sweat of their intense physical work, created AKT The Deodorant Balm, a potent natural product. Their focus was on being plastic-free and gender-neutral – and The Body Wash Concentrate, AKT's newest launch, claims to follow the same ethos. Why should I buy? Triple-strength concentration means you only need a pea-sized amount, and there's less water waste. The aluminium tube is recyclable and, instead of a typical plastic cap that can't be recycled, AKT's is aluminium and so helps reduce the amount of plastic entering our ecosystems. The packaging is chic, too, and the formula super-hydrating. Why shouldn't I buy? It's expensive and we have no idea where the ingredients are sourced from, or how sustainably they are farmed, since AKT couldn't tell us at the time of going to press. The extra mile AKT is working towards its B Corp certification, and planting trees with a search engine that helps restore biodiversity hotspots. The brand also has a key you can buy (The Assistant, £11) that saves waste by squeezing out those last few precious drops of body wash. Made in Hampshire, near Portsmouth. Made from Squalane, calendula oil, aloe vera and vitamin E. Journey Sea freight (for the aluminium packaging).

Officials check school buses for road worthiness in Kallakurichi
As many as 22 school buses out of a total of 197 buses were found not roadworthy during an inspection by officials of various departments in Kallakurichi on Friday. The officials have instructed the school authorities to take remedial measures and bring the vehicles back for inspection to get a fitness certificate. Collector M.S. Prasanth supervised the inspection under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Special Rules, 2012. Officials from the district administration, transport and school education departments inspected the vehicles from 47 schools in Kallakurichi on the AKT private school campus here. The officials checked the vehicles for fire extinguishers, first-aid boxes, emergency exits, and speed governors. They also made sure that attenders were appointed in the buses to assist students in boarding and alighting. Drivers will also be subjected to scrutiny and are required to have a minimum of five years of experience. The school managements have been given a week's time to set right shortcomings, an official said.

Five organisations offer support to MHA's efforts for ensuring free movement in Manipur
Five organisations of Manipur's Meitei and Thadou tribal communities have offered support for the Ministry of Home Affairs' efforts to ensure free movement of all communities across Manipur, including the National Highways in both the valley and hills. The five organisations, including Meitei Heritage Society and Thadou Inpi Manipur, also demanded firm action against any entities that block the free movement of all communities, as this is a constitutional right of all people and groups. The Manipur government recommenced bus services on March 8 on four routes connecting five districts -- Imphal, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur and Churachandpur. A large contingent of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel escorted the vehicles belonging to the government-owned Manipur State Transport Corporation (MSTC). Though the buses were escorted by the CAPF, activists of the tribal organisations attacked the buses in different places, including in Kangpokpi district, leading to massive violence. On March 8, at least 43 people, including 27 security personnel, were injured, and a protester identified as Lalgouthang Singsit was killed during the clashes in Kangpokpi and a few other districts as the Kuki-Zo tribal organisations protested against the resumption of the bus services between Imphal and the hill districts to alleviate public inconvenience and as an initiative to bring back normalcy in the state. These organisations in a joint statement have also demanded to introduce an Assam-like National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise to identify "illegal immigrants" through an updated process. "We reaffirmed to safeguard the integrity, unity, and interests of Manipur as a multi-ethnic state. All parties also recognised the significant roles and contributions of the Thadou people for the protection of the collective interest of Manipur people and the state's integrity," the statement said. The statement said that all parties jointly resolved to appeal to the competent authorities for the deletion of the "unconstitutional and ambiguous category Any Kuki Tribes (AKT)" from the Scheduled Tribes' list of Manipur. This unclear designation is being exploited by illegal immigrants to obtain undeserved Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, propagating a deadly ideology of "Kuki Supremacism" that endangers communal unity in Manipur and poses a direct threat to national security, the statement said. These organisations claimed that AKT was incorrectly added to the list of ST of Manipur in 2003 for political reasons, paving the way for the (mass) influx and legalisation of illegal immigrants. "The parties agreed that the term 'Kuki' is neither an ethnic nor a cultural identity, but rather a faulty colonial construct that was later exploited by the power-hungry activists and vested interests with separatist and political ideologies to gain control over local indigenous communities and separate from Manipur. None of the 29 originally recognised tribes of Manipur identify as Kuki or AKT. Therefore, the use or reference to the term 'Kuki' must be discontinued in all academic, research, and official settings." The statement said that to preserve and protect the authentic identities of the indigenous people of Manipur, the names of the recognised ST listed under Article 342 of the Constitution of India, each with its own distinct and independent ethnic identity, should be used only when referring to that specific tribe or community and not under any blanket, colonial, or imposed label.

Manipur's Meitei, Thadou groups push for NRC, free movement
GUWAHATI Five organisations representing Manipur's Meitei and Thadou communities have sought an Assam-like exercise to filter out 'illegal immigrants' through an updated National Register of Citizens (NRC). The organisations have also demanded the deletion of 'Any Kuki Tribes (AKT)' from the Scheduled Tribe list in Manipur and the termination of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki extremists, while vowing to protect the State's territorial integrity. The groups are Meitei Heritage Society, Delhi Manipuri Society, and Ningol United Progressive Initiative, which represent the Meitei civil society organisations, and Thadou Inpi Manipur and Thadou Students' Association, which represent the Thadous, who assert their non-Kuki identity. In a joint statement on May 2, 2025, the Meitei and Thadou organisations reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Manipur's integrity, unity, and interests as a multiethnic State. 'Both parties also recognise the significant roles and contributions of the Thadou people for the protection of the collective interest of Manipur people and the State's integrity,' it said. The two sets of organisations recognised Thadou as a distinct indigenous community, which 'does not fall under the category of Kuki or AKT'. They resolved to appeal to the competent authorities to delete the 'unconstitutional and ambiguous' AKT from the list of Scheduled Tribes in Manipur. 'This unclear designation is being exploited by illegal immigrants to obtain undeserved ST status, propagating a deadly ideology of Kuki supremacism that endangers communal unity in Manipur and poses a direct threat to national security. The AKT was incorrectly added to the ST list of Manipur in 2003 for political reasons, paving the way for the (mass) influx and legalisation of illegal immigrants,' they said. 'Neither ethnic nor cultural' The organisations said the term 'Kuki' was neither an ethnic nor a cultural identity, but a faulty colonial construct that was later exploited by power-hungry activists and vested interests with separatist and political ideologies to gain control over Manipur's indigenous communities. 'None of the 29 originally recognised tribes of Manipur identify as Kuki or AKT. Therefore, the use or reference to the term 'Kuki' must be discontinued in all academic, research, and official settings. To preserve and protect the authentic identities of the indigenous peoples of Manipur, the names of the recognised ST listed under Article 342 of the Constitution of India, each with its own distinct and independent ethnic identity, should be used only when referring to that specific tribe or community and not under any blanket, colonial, or imposed label,' they said. Denouncing Kuki extremism, the organisations demanded the termination of the SoO agreement with some 25 armed groups. They claimed the SoO groups weaponised the agreement to terrorise and suppress the unarmed indigenous people, particularly the Thadou community, in pursuit of an anti-Manipur agenda. Free movement 'Both parties collectively resolved to call upon the government of India to expedite the updating of the NRC in Manipur to identify and address the influx of illegal immigrants whose presence threatens indigenous communities and national security. A thorough NRC process is fundamental to preserving demographic integrity and restoring public confidence,' the Meitei-Thadou organisations said. They expressed support for the efforts of the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure free movement of all communities throughout the State, including the National Highways in both the Imphal Valley and the hills, and to take firm action against any entities that block this constitutional right. Since the ethnic conflict that broke out on May 3, 2023, Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo people have avoided going into each other's areas. The Meitei and Thadou organisations also agreed to appeal to the government to rehabilitate and resettle internally displaced people in their legitimate places of residence with proper compensation and protection. The bulk of some 60,000 displaced people in Manipur continue to live in relief camps.
