McGhee Tyson to temporarily close main entrance amid high traffic
ALCOA, Tenn. (WATE) — To manage heavy traffic, McGhee Tyson Airport plans to close the main entrance off Alcoa Highway for several nights in March. The airport staff anticipate higher than normal traffic from March 6 through the 24, so they are implementing a plan to prevent vehicles from backing up onto Alcoa Highway, which could cause safety issues. Alcoa soda shop fined $2,000 over TOSHA violations The main airport entrance off Alcoa Highway (US 129 South) is scheduled to close from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the following nights: Thursday, March 6 to Monday the 10 Thursday, March 13 to Monday the 17 Thursday, March 20 to Monday the 24 During these nights, visitors will be redirected to the Hunt Road Exit. Signs will guide drivers to the terminal building. Knoxville Police say fatal shooting inside car on I-640 believed to be accidental The airport posted that traffic coming from US 129 North won't be impacted, with the exit process remaining the same. Additionally, the airport will relocate the entrance to the parking garage starting the week of March 10. However, the new entrance will be close to the old one, so drivers will not need to change route. Staff will post signs marking the new entrance. McGhee Tyson Airport breaks passenger record in 2024
ALCOA, Tenn. (WATE) — McGhee Tyson Airport in East Tennessee had 3.3 million passengers in 2024, the most they've ever had. This was a 17% increase over 2023. The holidays were especially busy, with a regional TSA spokesperson telling 6 News there expected 6,000-7,000 people to pass through their checkpoints. TN Gov. Chances are, you've noticed just how busy we've been,' the airport posted on X. The airport is currently undergoing expansions. It broke ground on a new parking garage in November that builders expect to have 3,500 spots. This is part of a development plan to expand the airport to keep up with East Tennessee's population growth.
