Yankees face rotation decisions after veteran lefty's impressive start
Yankees face rotation decisions after veteran lefty's impressive start originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ryan Yarbrough was the stopper the New York Yankees needed Sunday night. After being humiliated on Saturday and losing the series, the converted reliever stepped up and delivered his best start with the Bronx Bombers. Advertisement In six innings, Yarbrough allowed just one run while striking out five in a 7-3 win over the Dodgers. That performance not only helped the Yankees win, but it also made it clear that Yarbrough has become a major piece of their rotation puzzle. Yarbrough has been impressive since moving from the bullpen into the starting rotation. He's 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in 13 appearances, five of them starts. With injuries hitting the Yankees' pitching staff hard, including losing Gerrit Cole for the season to Tommy John surgery, Yarbrough's ability to provide innings and stability has been a huge plus. Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, has been out since spring training with a high-grade lat strain. He took a big step Friday, throwing off a mound for the first time since the injury. Advertisement Gil still has a few steps to go, including facing live hitters and a rehab assignment. But when he's ready, the Yankees will have a decision to make. While Yarbrough gives them the flexibility to move him back to the bullpen, do they really want to lose one of their most effective starters? Rookie right-hander Will Warren was forced into the rotation out of necessity because of the injuries to Cole, Gil, and Clarke Schmidt. He has shown flashes of success, but he's also struggled. He still has minor league options. He could be the odd man out of the rotation. Yankees' Luis Gil back on mound for first time since suffering lat strain
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free LOS ANGELES — Luis Gil took the next step of his rehab process Friday — onto the mound. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year still has a ways to go before he could rejoin the Yankees from the high-grade lat strain he suffered in spring training, but his 15-pitch bullpen session Friday marked the latest box he has checked on the road back. 'I heard [it was] good,' manager Aaron Boone said Friday at Dodger Stadium before the Yankees' 8-5 loss to the Dodgers. 'Another good step for Luis.' Gil began his throwing program April 27 after being shut down for eight weeks following the diagnosis. Since he missed almost all of spring training, he will need to go through the equivalent of that (six weeks), but he still is behind where pitchers normally are when they report to camp. Given that, the best-case scenario may be getting Gil back at some point after the All-Star break in July since he still has to throw multiple bullpen sessions, multiple live batting practices and a rehab assignment to build up his pitch count. The Yankees rotation has been thriving lately, even without him and Gerrit Cole, who is out for the season because of Tommy John surgery, but the Yankees gladly will take Gil back whenever he is ready. Luis Gil, pitching during spring training, threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Friday, his latest rehab step as he looks to come back from a lat strain injury Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 'It's still going to be a while,' Boone said. 'Today was technically what we call a touch-and-feel, where you're getting off the slope for the first time. 'The good news is he seems to be in a really good spot. He's responded from this whole rehab process really well. Every step, whether it's once he started throwing and once he started long tossing, now getting on the mound, it's gone really well. I know he's felt really good throughout it, so hopefully that's a good sign.' Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique strain) came through his first rehab game Thursday feeling good and had Friday off. Jazz Chisholm talks with Liberty Star Breanna Stewart who threw out the pitch before the Yankees' win over the Mets on May 18, 2025. Corey Sipkin / New York Post He will play another game Saturday with Double-A Somerset at third base, then potentially DH on Sunday before possibly being activated Tuesday when the Yankees open a homestand. Boone reiterated that he is 'leaning' toward having Chisholm play third base when he gets back — after playing second base to start the season — which allows DJ LeMahieu to play second base, where he is most comfortable, as he tries to prove he still can contribute. 'Even when you have the skill set to do it, like Jazz obviously does, third, when you haven't done it, can be a little tricky on the fly,' Boone said. 'He had some growing pains in there [last year], but overall, he was elite, in my opinion. The range he has over there, the arm strength, some of the double plays he was turning, I thought he did really well.' Giancarlo Stanton (tennis elbows) has been getting five to seven at-bats in live batting practice every day this week in Tampa, which will continue through the weekend. The Yankees will then reassess what comes next — either more live at-bats or a rehab assignment — but he is likely to need at least another week before he could be activated. Fernando Cruz (shoulder inflammation) is scheduled to face hitters Saturday in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium. If that goes well, he is likely to be activated when first eligible on Tuesday. Mookie Betts was not in the Dodgers lineup after stubbing his toe Wednesday night at home, manager Dave Roberts said. He was set to undergo X-rays before first pitch, with Roberts labeling him as day to day.

Angels star Mike Trout activated, in lineup as DH
May 30 - Activated by the Los Angeles Angels on Friday after spending one month on the injured list, Mike Trout is in the starting lineup as the designated hitter against the host Cleveland Guardians. Trout, 33, is batting fifth in his return. Outfielder Matthew Lugo was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Trout, a three-time American League Most Valuable Player, sustained a bone bruise on his surgically repaired left knee while trying to beat out a grounder on April 30. This week, Trout resumed running the bases and taking batting practice. He returns to an Angels team that has lost five games in a row after winning its previous eight. Trout is in his first season as a right fielder, having moved from center field in an attempt to maintain his health. In his absence, Jo Adell served as the primary right fielder and hit .200 with four homers and seven RBIs over 23 games this month. That average is actually higher than Trout's .179 this year. He's also carrying a subpar .264 on-base percentage. However, Trout has nine homers, 18 RBIs and a .462 slugging percentage through 29 games. Trout, 33, captured AL Rookie of the Year in 2012, then won AL MVP honors in 2014, 2016 and 2019. He also finished second in MVP voting in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018. The 11-time All-Star is a nine-time Silver Slugger honoree. Across 1,547 games in 15 seasons, Trout owns a career batting slash line of .297/.408/.579 with 387 homers, 972 RBIs and 214 stolen bases. His total of 85.8 Win Shares, per Baseball-Reference, ranks fifth all-time among center fielders -- trailing only Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Mickey Mantle. --Field Level Media

Dodgers, Yankees haven't 'skipped a beat' despite injuries
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees continue their three-game series this Saturday evening at Dodger Stadium. You can watch all the action on FOX and the FOX Sports app with coverage starting at 7:15 pm ET. It shouldn't be a surprise that both teams haven't skipped a beat since meeting in last year's World Series, though it hasn't been without adversity. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole had Tommy John surgery in March and AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil has been on the shelf all season with a strained lat muscle. Meanwhile, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, Gavin Stone, Brusdar Graterol, Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen are all on the injured list for Los Angeles. Sheesh. Despite all the injuries to their pitching staffs, both teams keep winning. New York (35-20) has the third-best record in baseball behind the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles (34-22) is right on their heels. Great teams always find a way. It also helps to have superheroes like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. "It feels like the Dodgers haven't really had a great year," Westgate SuperBook senior baseball trader Randy Blum told FOX Sports. "Then you look up, and they're a top-three team in baseball that's sitting in first place. It speaks to the depth of their team and their ability to sustain injuries. "The offense is still very legit," Blum continued. "They're winning some shootouts. Ohtani has just been amazing. I'm double the market on him for MVP because he's going to start pitching soon. The guy has the best numbers of any player in the National League, and now he's going to pitch. "They're also going to get some of these pitchers back from what I've been reading from the beat writers. We'll probably never see 'em at 100 percent, but reinforcements are on the way. They're winning without these guys and if they get even half of them back, they're still the team to beat." World Series odds via DraftKings Sportsbook: Los Angeles Dodgers: +280 (bet $10 to win $38 total) New York Yankees: +550 (bet $10 to win $65 total) Philadelphia Phillies: +750 (bet $10 to win $85 total) Detroit Tigers: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total) New York Mets: +950 (bet $10 to win $105 total) Chicago Cubs: +1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total) Seattle Mariners: +1700 (bet $10 to win $180 total) Houston Astros: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total) Minnesota Twins: +1900 (bet $10 to win $200 total) Atlanta Braves: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total) As for the Bronx Bombers, they're doing exactly that — bombing the baseball. They currently lead the Majors with 88 home runs and Judge is on pace to have one of the greatest all-around seasons of all time. He's slashing an insane .391/.739/1.227 with 18 homers, 51 runs and 47 RBIs and the advanced metrics say he's already worth over four wins. Judge is as high as -10000 to win the AL MVP. "As good as Judge has been, I'm more impressed by the pitching staff," Blum admitted. "It's so unexpected. This was a huge concern in Spring Training after [Gerrit] Cole got hurt and Luis Gil got hurt. This is not what was expected. "[Carlos] Rodon has performed in the past, but even he's having his best year as a Yankee. They're piecing the rest of the rotation together." But what about Judge? "I don't want to sell Judge short," Blum said. "He's been incredible. He should win another MVP, which should be his fourth. I thought he got robbed his rookie season the year they gave it to Jose Altuve." Assuming Judge finishes the season strong, he'll win his third MVP award in pinstripes to draw even with Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle. He'll quite literally be one of the greatest Yankees of all-time. "He's obviously got to sustain it for a few years," Blum said. "Barring injuries or a very steep decline, there's no reason he can't keep it up. And the power will always be there because he's such a large individual." Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins goes on 10-day IL with hamstring strain
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Cedric Mullins on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain prior to their series-opener against the Chicago White Sox. Mullins has played 50 games, including all nine innings of Wednesday's loss to St. Louis after missing the first two games of the series. He is leading the struggling Orioles with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and 19 extra-base hits. Baltimore (19-36) began Friday with baseball's third-worst record after consecutive playoff appearances in 2023 and 2024. Mullins' IL stint comes as Baltimore anticipates the return of 2024 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up and outfielder Colton Cowser (thumb), who is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles signed utility player Cooper Hummel to a one-year major league contract in a corresponding move. Baltimore could be one of only a few sellers at the MLB trade deadline, with Mullins as one of the most movable pieces. The 30-year-old Mullins will hit free agency in 2026. He can play all three outfield positions and has exceeded 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in each of the last four seasons. He earned a 2021 All-Star appearance while homering 30 times, contributing 59 RBIs and batting .291 in 159 games. ___ AP MLB:
