Malaysia to renew tariff negotiations in Washington, says Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz will travel to Washington, United States (US), on June 18 to resume negotiations over tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. Tengku Zafrul said he had briefed the cabinet earlier today on the upcoming visit. 'I will be going to the United States next week, and we will continue in-person negotiations. Previously, discussions were held online. I will meet with the US Trade Representative in Washington next week,' he told reporters after witnessing the signing ceremony of the DayOne Syndicated Financing and Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme. He added that he is scheduled to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as well as other officials from the US administration and investors. Tengku Zafrul will also take the opportunity to engage with several business chambers, companies, and interest groups, including the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the US-Asean Business Council. Earlier, on April 24, Tengku Zafrul led a high-level delegation to Washington, where he held talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Greer. During that meeting, Tengku Zafrul stressed the importance of sustained engagement and reiterated Malaysia's commitment to finding constructive solutions to the concerns raised by the US. Malaysia has expressed its readiness to negotiate in four key areas: narrowing the trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, strengthening technology protection and security, and exploring the potential for a bilateral trade agreement. On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced tariff measures affecting around 60 countries, including a 24 per cent levy on most Malaysian goods. However, the tariffs have been temporarily suspended for 90 days for most countries to allow room for trade negotiations. — Bernama

Speaking after an event in Kuala Lumpur today, Tengku Zafrul said he briefed the Cabinet earlier today on the upcoming visit. 'I will be going to the United States next week, and we will continue in-person negotiations. Previously, discussions were held online,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Tengku Zafrul added that he was scheduled to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other US officials, investors and key business groups, including the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the US-Asean Business Council. Tengku Zafrul's follow-up visit comes after his visit in April, during which he met with Greer and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Malaysia faces a 24% tariff on certain exports to the US unless both sides reach an agreement before the current 90-day pause ends on July 8. Tengku Zafrul previously said that talks with the US would focus on three specific areas, namely reducing the 24% rate, non-tariff trade barriers and trade imbalance between the two nations.

Economic Resilience Bolsters US Investor Confidence In Malaysia -- AMCHAM

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS By Nurunnasihah Ahmad Rashid KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's economic growth of 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q 2025) is a positive indicator of resilience and broadly reflects the stable business environment experienced by members of the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM). bootstrap slideshow In a statement to Bernama, AMCHAM chief executive officer Datuk Siobhan Das said the US business community continues to view Malaysia as a strategic hub in the region, and this momentum reinforces a positive investment outlook. She highlighted that the strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and the United States — built over more than five decades — remain vital, and the association anticipates continued US investment in Malaysia. 'We also anticipate Malaysian corporate investment into the US to grow on the back of the strong gross domestic product (GDP) numbers,' she added. Das noted that while GDP performance is one of many yardsticks used by US multinationals, their investment outlook is largely influenced by the ease of day-to-day operations. 'What drives operational and growth decisions for US multinationals is the day-to-day experience, ensuring their business activities are not hampered by administrative bureaucracy and outdated, frequently changing rules and regulations. 'Although economic indicators remain relevant, long-term American investments also depend on Malaysia's competitiveness within global value chains,' she said.

KOTRA, AMCHAM to cooperate on regulatory reform, S. Korea-US trade

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency and the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea on Thursday formed a strategic partnership to promote regulatory reform and boost bilateral trade between South Korea and the United States, the organizations said. Under a memorandum of understanding signed on the day, the two organizations agreed to collaborate on promoting regulatory reform and support initiatives that advance the US-Korea economic partnership. They will set up a joint working-level committee to identify and recommend regulatory improvements to this end. The two sides also plan to co-host briefings, exhibitions and export consultations while continuing to explore new opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment. "We hope this partnership with AMCHAM will serve as a valuable bridge for Korean small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to enter the US market," KOTRA Chief Executive Officer Kang Kyung-sung said. James Kim, chairman and CEO of AMCHAM, said the partnership represents a key step forward in reducing non-tariff barriers in bilateral trade and strengthening South Korea's position as a premier regional business hub. South Korea to host Alaska governor, energy team amid talk of gas pipeline

SEOUL, March 25 (Reuters) - Alaskan state representatives led by the governor and including energy officials are due to visit South Korea on Tuesday, amid expectations of talks with U.S. allies in Asia to revive a stalled natural gas project touted by President Donald Trump. Governor Mike Dunleavy's delegation will include officials from the Glanfarne Group that is a partner in the project to transport gas from Alaska's remote north via a $44 billion pipeline and the state gas agency, the main U.S. business lobby in Seoul said. "Discussions over expanding energy cooperation between the two countries are scheduled," the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) said in a statement. The officials are due to meet senior South Korean officials and leaders of major businesses for discussions on key industrial sectors including energy, infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing, it said. Trump has sought to shore up the gas project and called for the participation of South Korea, Japan and Taiwan that are seen as potential buyers of the gas that would be transported through the 1,300-km (800 mile) pipeline. South Korea has already said it would be actively involved in discussions over the project. South Korea, a major exporter of steel, autos and electric vehicle batteries to the United States, has been bracing for Trump's plan to impose tough tariffs on countries that have trade surpluses in bilateral U.S. trade. Trump, who has directed his team to prepare reciprocal tariff plans by early April, has said South Korea's average tariff was four times higher than the rate imposed by the United States. Seoul has disputed Trump's assertion. South Korea's trade ministry said the country's effective tariff rate on U.S. imports was 0.79% as nearly all import duty was eliminated under the free trade agreement signed first in 2007. Dunleavy's delegation was expected to be in South Korea through Wednesday. Meetings with South Korea's acting president and industry minister as well as with the heads of the state gas corporation, the SK and Hanwha conglomerates and POSCO International were planned, AMCHAM said. The Alaska governor's office declined to comment on his schedule.
