Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to establish English-medium school in Thakkarbapa Nagar

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) School Board has decided to establish an English-medium school in Thakkarbapa Nagar area's India Colony locality, where two Marathi and Tamil medium schools were previously shut down due to low student enrollment. The Board has also decided to name the newly renovated English-medium school as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Public School. Last week, on Saturday, a ground-breaking ceremony of the new school was held in the presence of local elected representatives from Lok Sabha and Gujarat Assembly and office bearers of the AMC School Board. The officials said that they plan to start the school from next academic year in June 2026. AMC School Board Chairman Sujay Mehta told The Indian Express, 'Presently, around 450 schools of the Corporation are operating. Earlier, Marathi and Tamil classes were being held at a school in India Colony. However, gradually it closed down due to the dearth of students. So, for the last 10 years, this school building was lying closed. Our local school board member, local councilors and local MLA Kanchaben Radadiya were in contact with the local residents and they had given a representation stating that there is no English-medium school in the entire area and so if such a school could be started there, it would be beneficial to the (local) students.' 'Considering the representation, we wrote a letter to the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan of Gujarat government and we got the permission (to start an English-medium school). So, we have dismantled the old building and did ground breaking (for the new school building). We have decided to name the new school as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Public School,' Mehta added. Those present at the groundbreaking ceremony included members of Parliament Hasmukh Patel and Dinesh Makwana, local MLA Kanchan Radadiya and president of Ahmedabad City unit of BJP Prerak Shah. Mehta said that they are trying 'to make the school functional by the start of next academic year in June 2026'.
