Zahid in New Zealand: DPM studies disaster response on fourth day of official visit

WELLINGTON, July 17 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is scheduled to visit New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre today to observe the country's disaster and crisis response framework. Located in the Beehive Bunker beneath New Zealand's Parliament, the visit forms part of the fourth day of his official working trip to the country, in line with his responsibilities as Chairman of Malaysia's Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP). The visit aims to gain insights into New Zealand's emergency response systems, inter-agency coordination, and post-disaster recovery strategies – areas for which the country is widely recognised for its preparedness and transparency. Ahmad Zahid is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with New Zealand's Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, to explore potential cooperation in food security and strategic supply chains. Later in the day, he will attend a community engagement session with Malaysians in Wellington, where over 250 citizens residing in the country are expected to participate. The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to conclude his working visit and return to Kuala Lumpur on Friday (July 18). Since arriving in Auckland on July 14, he has met with local industry leaders and business groups, including the ASEAN–New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC). On the second day, he travelled to Rotorua for the Māori Business Roundtable, aimed at strengthening collaboration in indigenous and social development initiatives. On the third day, he was in the capital for meetings with senior New Zealand government officials at the Beehive, as part of ongoing efforts to further enhance Malaysia–New Zealand bilateral relations. — Bernama

Malaysia and New Zealand strengthen ties in sustainability, digital, and food security

AUCKLAND: Malaysia has outlined three priority areas to deepen cooperation with New Zealand, focusing on sustainability, digital transformation, and food security. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasised the alignment between both nations in advancing green energy, digital innovation, and agri-food trade. Speaking at the ASEAN-New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) Engagement, Ahmad Zahid noted New Zealand's leadership in renewable energy, with 87 per cent of its electricity sourced sustainably. 'This aligns closely with Malaysia's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,' he said. On digital transformation, he highlighted potential synergies between Malaysia's MyDIGITAL agenda and New Zealand's expertise in ICT, particularly in AI, smart cities, and cybersecurity. 'Collaboration in digital trade governance can drive mutual economic benefits,' he added. In the agri-food sector, Ahmad Zahid pointed to New Zealand's reputation for quality and innovation, complementing Malaysia's halal certification and logistics strengths. 'As ASEAN's middle class grows, this partnership presents vast opportunities,' he said. However, he stressed the need for inclusive growth, ensuring MSMEs in ASEAN and Malaysia benefit from improved trade finance, digital tools, and capacity building. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and New Zealand reached US$2.34 billion (RM10.72 billion) in 2024, making Malaysia New Zealand's second-largest ASEAN trading partner. Ahmad Zahid described the relationship as a 'deep-rooted partnership,' strengthened by agreements like the Malaysia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement and AANZFTA. The ANZBC event, held at Park Hyatt Hotel Auckland, aimed to enhance economic ties and explore trade opportunities between ASEAN and New Zealand. Attendees included ANZBC chairman Kathleen Morrison and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's Ivy Huang. - Bernama

From Ahmad Erwan Othman AUCKLAND, July 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has described people-to-people ties as the 'glue' that binds the long-standing partnership between Malaysia and New Zealand. Ahmad Zahid Highlights Three Priority Areas To Enhance Malaysia-NZ Cooperation

From Ahmad Erwan Othman AUCKLAND, July 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has identified three priority areas for enhanced cooperation with New Zealand, namely sustainability, digital transformation and food security. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said New Zealand, with 87 per cent of its electricity generated from renewable sources, is a leader in the green transition. 'This aligns closely with Malaysia's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,' he said at the ASEAN-New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) Engagement here this evening. On digital transformation, Ahmad Zahid said the potential for synergy between Malaysia's MyDIGITAL agenda and New Zealand's strengths in information and communications technology (ICT), particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities, cybersecurity and digital trade governance. In the agri-food sector, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Halal Industry Development Council chairman said New Zealand's global reputation for quality and innovation aligns well with Malaysia's capabilities in halal certification and logistics, presenting enormous potential for both economies as ASEAN's middle class expands. However, Ahmad Zahid stressed that economic growth must be inclusive by ensuring that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across ASEAN, including in Malaysia, are not left behind. 'That means improving access to trade finance, digital tools and capacity building,' he said.
