Agriculture ministers of S. Korea, China, Japan hold 1st trilateral meeting in 7 yrs
Agriculture ministers of South Korea, China and Japan held a meeting Monday to discuss food security, animal disease response, sustainable farming and other issues, ending a seven-year hiatus in the countries' trilateral talks, Seoul's agriculture ministry said. South Korean Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung met with her counterparts from China and Japan -- Han Jun and Shinjiro Koizumi, respectively -- in Incheon, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul, to resume the trilateral meeting, which had been suspended for seven years partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The ministers came together to discuss six agricultural issues: food security, response to animal diseases, sustainable farming, revitalization of rural areas, cooperation on the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems and international cooperation. Monday's meeting followed the 2025 APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting, held over the weekend in Incheon. In the trilateral meeting, the ministers agreed on the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation to respond to global challenges in the agriculture sector, such as climate change, the spread of infectious animal diseases and supply chain instability, the ministry said. The three countries also agreed to join hands for developing smart farming technologies, supporting the transition to carbon neutral agriculture and fostering young farmers, it added. After the meeting, Song and her counterparts adopted a joint statement calling for efforts to promote sustainable growth of the agriculture sector and bolster food security while agreeing to hold regular meetings. "At a time when the agricultural environment is rapidly changing due to such factors as the climate crisis and supply chain instability, it is highly meaningful that the three countries have gathered in one place to share concerns and seek solutions together," Song said. "I hope that the discussions initiated at this meeting will lead to deeper and more practical cooperation in the future," she added. Song also held a bilateral meeting with Koizumi to discuss ways to expand Seoul's exports of food and agricultural products to Japan and deepen cooperation on animal disease response. The bilateral meeting also marked the first of its kind in seven years. During their talks, Song told Koizumi that cooperation between Korea and Japan can help enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the countries' agriculture industries as they share similar systems and challenges, according to her office. Amid LDP turmoil, Japan's Koizumi to meet S. Korea's top diplomat in Seoul
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun will meet Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in Seoul on Monday, the Foreign Ministry in Seoul said Friday. Koizumi, a potential contender to become the next leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party amid domestic political turbulence following the party's recent election debacle, will embark on his three-day trip to South Korea on Saturday. Koizumi will participate in the APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting, hosted by South Korea and scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Incheon. He will also attend a trilateral meeting of agricultural ministers from South Korea, Japan and China on Monday. 'Our government has been seeking various high-level exchanges to forge a more solid and mature relationship between Korea and Japan, and this meeting is part of those efforts,' a Foreign Ministry official in Seoul said on condition of anonymity when asked about the background of Cho's meeting with Koizumi. Cho's separate meeting with Koizumi is widely seen as rare and commanding attention, given the ongoing Japanese political turmoil and his rise as a contender for the next LDP leader. The LDP-led coalition's loss of its upper house majority in a historic defeat in the July 20 election has left the fate of Prime Minister and LDP leader Shigeru Ishiba hanging in the balance. A recent public opinion poll conducted by Japan News Network from Aug. 2 to 3 among 2,531 people nationwide aged 18 or older found that Koizumi was favored when asked who would be the most suitable next prime minister should Ishiba stand down. Koizumi topped the poll with 20.4 percent of respondents choosing him, followed by former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi with 16.7 percent. Koizumi's prospects as a political leader were widely deemed over after he finished third in the LDP's leadership race in September. However, Koizumi has recently reclaimed the political spotlight after being inaugurated as Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in May. Koizumi has been acclaimed for bringing down rice prices in his current capacity amid rising household burdens, with his leadership viewed as being in a manner evocative of his father, popular former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Working-level APEC meeting on food security held in Gyeongju
A working-level Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting on food security was held in South Korea to discuss global food security, Seoul's agriculture ministry said Thursday. The three-day APEC policy partnership on food security took place in Gyeongju, about 275 kilometers southeast of Seoul, from Tuesday, with some 120 officials from 21 APEC member states in attendance, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. In the meeting, officials adopted "Driving Innovation in Agri-food Systems for Shared Prosperity" as the main agenda for the APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting to be held in Songdo, about 40 kilometers west of Seoul, in August. South Korea plans to host various APEC meetings in the country throughout the year as the host country of this year's APEC summit, slated to be held in Gyeongju in November. The ministry said the APEC road map on strengthening the region's food security by 2030 was discussed during this week's meeting. (Yonhap)
