Apple CEO Tim Cook has had an obsession in recent years: beating Meta to the punch with a consumer-grade version of AI-powered AR smart glasses. Unfortunately for Cook, this is very unlikely to happen, given the pace at which the company is tackling its his newsletter Power On, Apple insider Mark Gurman says that by the time there is a pair of smart glasses to complement the iPhone, Meta will have already established dominance. In fact, Apple may only release a pair of glasses that doesn't come with a display, while Meta will have had a product with a screen for approximately a year. Meta has seen unprecedented success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, and has followed that up with a new pair of smart glasses made with Oakley. Apple reportedly wanted in on the hype train, but its ambitions have been delayed again and again because of the slow progress of Apple Intelligence. Meta is now preparing to launch a pair of glasses that have a screen, albeit not a proper AR ( Augmented Reality ) display. The company wants these glasses to bridge the gap until its launch of a consumer version of the Orion smart glasses in 2027. When the company will get around to actually making a pair of AR glasses, and not just a display-free product, is up in the air. For all we know, it might not even happen. I think it will, though. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is convinced that AR glasses are the future of smartphones, and has invested billions of Dollars into research. Following in Meta's footsteps, Samsung is re-entering the XR ( Extended Reality ) industry with Project Moohan: a new MR ( Mixed Reality ) headset. Apple isn't giving up on XR, either. The Apple Vision Pro is getting an upgrade, possibly this year. This possible Apple Vision Pro 2 is a marginal improvement, and is also simply meant to keep the company relevant in the market until it can deliver a better product down the line.

CBS Texas recently launched a new augmented reality/virtual reality set, making it the only station in the region to offer the groundbreaking technology. The new AR/VR set launched on June 23, introducing a new way to deliver weather and news, immersing audiences in the story. Every week, we'll speak with a different person who has contributed to the project or will work closely with it. This week, CBS Texas sat down with Adam Bull, director of broadcast operations and engineering. CBS Texas: How does this new technology work? Adam Bull: This is some really cool tech. The best way to think about it is like being in a video game. We take a person, have them stand on a green background, cut them out and digitally paste them into a video game engine. This person wears an infrared tracker so they can interact with and walk around objects on the screen. They look at monitors above and in front of them to see what they are doing. It takes some practice to make it look like you are interacting with something that only exists in the virtual world. Our meteorologists also use an iPad to talk to the system. They send commands like, bring up a virtual monitor or change the map on the floor. CBS Texas: How much work went into launching this set? Bull: Quite a bit, actually. [The IT team] took more than six months of planning, construction and rehearsals to bring it online. For the geniuses at our [CBS] San Francisco station who pioneered this technology, it took a couple of years to develop. CBS Texas: What are you looking forward to next? Bull: I am excited to see where the creative minds from our news, weather and sports teams take us. This technology is cool, but it is really about bringing everyone into an immersive world so our storytellers can share their vision and take the viewer on a virtual journey. CBS Texas: What makes this set different from any other? Everything can be changed and nothing is "set in stone." The same green set we use for news and weather, at the click of a mouse, becomes a sports set or the Sistine Chapel. AR recovers huge cache of arms in Arunachal
Dibrugarh: Assam Rifles on Thursday recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition during a planned search operation at the MS 38 area, along the Miao-Vijaynagar axis, in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Deploying specialized teams, niche technology equipment and tracker dogs, Assam Rifles recovered six weapons, including three rifles — two of which were of AK-series — one Lathode (a type of grenade launcher), one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), and one locally made 7.62mm rifle. A large quantity of ammunition was also seized. "The operation was conducted based on credible intelligence inputs, and our teams executed it with precision. This seizure is a significant blow to militant groups operating in the region," a senior AR official said. Security analysts suggest that the recovered arms were most likely intended for various militant groups known to operate in the northeast, who often utilize AK-series rifles, UBGLs, and other similar weaponry.
