Explained: How Mexican Navy Ship Collided With Brooklyn Bridge In New York

New York, US: The Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtemoc, which hit the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, apparently lost power moments before the crash, forcing it to head towards the bridge, the New York police department said. Upon collision with the New York City landmark, the ship snapped all three of its masts, killing two people and injuring 19 others. "At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries," Adams posted on X. The ship, which measures 297 feet (91m) in length and 40 feet (12m) in width, sailed for the first time in 1982. Each year, the ship set sail at the end of the naval military school classes to finish cadets' training. This year also, the vessel had left the Acapulco port in Mexico on April 6, with its final destination intended to be Iceland, according to the Mexican navy. It lost power at around 8:20 pm (local time) while the captain was manoeuvring the vessel, forcing it to head for the bridge abutment on the Brooklyn side, New York police chief of special operations Wilson Aramboles told a press conference. The vessel's 45m (147ft) masts were too tall to pass through the arched bridge, which, according to the New York transport department's website, has a 135ft clearance at its centre. Several sailors at the top of the ship were injured when it crashed into the bridge, Aramboles said. It is not clear if these sailors are among the dead. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday she was "deeply saddened" by the loss of two crew members from a navy ship after it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtemoc Training Ship," she posted on social media. How the Ship Collided Footage shared online showed the sails of the Mexican Navy ship Cuauhtemoc furled, with festive lights and flags draped in its rigging, while an enormous Mexican flag waved off its stern. The ship was passing through the East River as hundreds of cheering spectators had gathered to bid it farewell. There were about 200 people on board the vessel, which arrived in the United States for a sailing event. — Gene Green (@GeneGreen344103) May 18, 2025 As a tradition, the vessel has been docked at a pier in southern Manhattan since Tuesday and was departing New York at the time of the accident. As it tried to pass beneath the bridge, its masts were sheared off, sending the vessel crashing into the East River. The ship was later moved to near the Manhattan Bridge, per an AFP report. The incident is the second deadly ship crash into a bridge in the United States in little over a year, after a vessel smashed into a bridge in Baltimore in March 2024, causing it to collapse and killing six road workers.

Mexican Navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge (VIDEOS)

Two sailors were killed and many others injured when a Mexican Navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night. The vessel lost power and drifted into the bridge during its departure from New York, according to officials. Videos from the scene show the ARM Cuauhtemoc's three tall, illuminated masts crashing into the underside of the bridge's road deck and toppling onto the ship. Multiple crew members were stationed on the masts at the time of the impact, the New York Post reported, citing fire officials and unnamed sources. The outlet also said rescuers were seen pulling people from the water. The ARM Cuauhtemoc was carrying 277 crew members when the incident occurred. New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters that at least 19 people were injured, including four in critical condition. 'The status of the personnel and material is under review by naval and local authorities, who are providing support,' the Mexican Navy said in a statement on X. According to the Latin Times, the crew may have miscalculated the height of the ship's 171-foot masts in relation to the bridge's 127-foot clearance at high tide. Despite the dramatic crash, officials have found no major structural damage to the bridge. Fabien Levy, a spokesman for Mayor Adams, said there appeared to be 'no signs of structural damage.'In an absolutely stunning modern metaphor a ship blaring Mexican music and flying a massive Mexican flag just got destroyed by the Brooklyn bridge. Can't make it The Cuauhtemoc had been in New York on a goodwill visit ahead of an international parade of tall ships next year in New York Harbor to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence. Brooklyn Bridge crash: Mexican Navy ship plows toward pedestrians on shore after mega crash

Shocking footage captured the moment a colossal vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, causing chaos as tourists scrambled to safety amid their screams. The initial assessment seemed to show the Brooklyn Bridge withstood the impact without apparent major damage, yet the same couldn't be said for the vessel; its masts crumpled and toppled onto the deck. Over 200 passengers were aboard during the collision, prompting an immediate search and rescue mission. The ship, identified as ARM Cuauhtemoc, is understood to be a Mexican Navy training ship, but the reason behind its navigation through the East River remains a mystery. Social media was abuzz, with one X user posting, "Just watched the Brooklyn Bridge get smoked live by a boat with a massive Mexican flag," attaching footage of the disastrous encounter. Another expressed disbelief, saying, "A massive pirate ship just hit the Brooklyn Bridge," and shared a video clip of the unfolding drama, reports the Mirror US . A baffled user questioned, "Uhhh what is happening here? ? ?" followed by, "That boat celebrating some Mexican boat just crashed into Brooklyn Bridge." Dramatic aerial video showcased the tragic moment from above, illustrating the impressive three-masted vessel's devastating impact with the renowned New York City structure, dragging down twinkling fairy lights along with the collapsing masts. The crash is being called a 'mass casualty' event (Image: X/@Corso52) The ship had over 200 passengers aboard (Image: X/@TheWillieNelson) The fairy lights turned out to be unexpectedly helpful as they momentarily caught the falling mast before it crashed onto the deck. Passengers were seen standing directly beneath it when it collapsed. Another clip captures the bridge quaking from below as the ship slams into it. Tourists on a pier under the bridge screamed and scattered as the vessel charged towards them post-collision. In all the videos, screams can be heard as bystanders on shore quickly pull out their phones to record the incident or dash to safety further inland. Mexican Navy Vessel Slams Into Brooklyn Bridge, Injuring Many As People Cling To Masts: Watch Shocking Video

A Mexican Navy training vessel with about 200 on board crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday night, sending panic into the streets and setting off a frantic search and rescue effort in the East River. The ship, the ARM Cuauhtemoc, is said to have hit the bridge around 9 p.m., when a giant 147-foot mast on the ship collided with the lower part of the famous bridge. The collision has been referred to by authorities as a mass casualty incident, with several injuries and at least two in critical condition, according to initial news reports by The New York Post and The Mirror. Casualties And Emergency Response Emergency teams were sent to the area right away, and victims are now being brought to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Those who were severely injured are being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The authorities have not officially stated the total number of people injured. The Cuauhtemoc, a steel-hulled tall ship belonging to the Mexican Navy and utilised for training, was traveling south on the East River at the time of the incident. The motive for being there and the route that took it under the bridge are still under investigation. Videos Of The Incident Go Viral A dramatic video of the instant that the ship hit the bridge has streamed on social media, with the vessel's mast crashing into the lower part of the bridge as onlookers stood in awe. A X (formerly Twitter) user posted, "Just watched the Brooklyn Bridge get smoked live by a boat with a massive Mexican flag." Another blog post called the accident a "giant pirate ship" crashing into the bridge, and a third participant called it a "dazzling modern metaphor" since the ship, "blaring Mexican music and flying a massive Mexican flag," was dented by the Brooklyn Bridge. Just watched the Brooklyn Bridge get smoked live by a boat with a massive Mexican flag — Nelson Slinkard (@TheWillieNelson) May 18, 2025 About The Vessel The ARM Cuauhtemoc, launched in 1982 and constructed in Bilbao, Spain, is a sail training ship employed by the Mexican Navy to train cadets in seamanship and navigation. The vessel is famous for its international goodwill voyages and attendance at maritime festivals worldwide. Bridge Damage And Investigation Authorities are now evaluating the strength of the Brooklyn Bridge's structure. No damage has so far been reported to the main road, though the full extent of the collision's effect on the bridge's lower deck and sea routes is still under assessment. Incident Brings Back Memories Of Baltimore Bridge Collapse The accident has been compared to the March 2024 Baltimore bridge collapse, in which a cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, killing six maintenance workers and causing a 1.6-mile-long span to collapse. That tragedy led to increased attention on maritime safety procedures and infrastructure weakness. Next Steps The investigation is being conducted by the US Coast Guard, New York City emergency responders, and officials from the Mexican Consulate. Maritime safety officials are also examining the conditions under which the tall ship was navigated underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, which has a vertical clearance of about 127 feet at mean high water. No official announcement has been issued by the Mexican Navy, although updates are to be expected as the inquiry continues.
