BJP welcomes SC observation on Kancha Gachibowli land clearing
HYDERABAD: The BJP on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court's stern observations and warning of possible contempt proceedings against the A Revanth Reddy-led Congress government for its reckless and unlawful attempt to bulldoze parts of the Kancha Gachibowli forest overnight. BJP Telangana chief spokesperson and media in-charge NV Subash said the episode reflects the Revanth Reddy government's blatant disregard for environmental laws and judicial directives. He alleged that the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC), acting on behalf of the state government, attempted to alienate over 400 acres of ecologically sensitive land, triggering outrage from environmental activists and students of the University of Hyderabad, which is located adjacent to the forest area. 'TGIIC's misadventure not only undermines environmental norms but also threatens the health and well-being of students and faculty residing on the central university campus. Their protests are justified and reflect the growing public anger against this government's misplaced priorities,' Subash said. He called for a transparent inquiry into the decision-making process behind the attempted deforestation and demanded that all those responsible for violating the Forest Conservation Act and other environmental safeguards be held accountable. In recent days, multiple reports and visuals have emerged showing widespread tree felling and illegal clearing of forest cover, which led to widespread condemnation and finally attracted the apex court's intervention, he said.

Powering progress: Telangana aims for 20,000 MW by 2030; deputy CM Mallu Bhatti highlights green energy plan
HYDERABAD: Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday sought to assure industrialists and investors that the Congress govt has set the process in motion to generate 20,000 MW by 2029-30 to cater to the growing power supply needs following chief minister A Revanth Reddy-led team attracting over Rs 3 lakh crore investments to the state. Bhattiheld a review meeting with officials of TS Genco after inspecting the Nagarjuna Sagar Hydro Electric Power Station. "We are focusing on clean and affordable green power with plans in place to generate 20,000 MW of green energy alone in the next four to five years," he said. The chairman, managing directors, engineers and staff of the electricity department will be trained in the latest global technologies, he said. Despite a 2,000 MW rise from last year, Telangana managed uninterrupted power supply at 17,162 MW peak demand, he said. Ahead of civic polls, Telangana cabinet clears 42% quota
HYDERABAD: A cabinet meeting of the A Revanth Reddy-led Congress govt in Telangana approved Thursday a proposal to grant 42% reservation to Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies - just in time for panchayat elections within three months, as mandated by a June 25 high court directive. The quota will be implemented through an ordinance. The reservation percentage is based on empirical data from the caste survey conducted by the state govt and submitted to the BC Commission headed by Busani Venkateshwara Rao. Based on Supreme Court's verdict permitting sub-classification of groups entitled to reservation, the cabinet had approved amendments to the Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, as precursor to raising the quota for Backwards Classes. With governor Jishnu Dev Varma proroguing the assembly and legislative council sessions on Thursday, the state govt now has the constitutional window to issue the relevant ordinance. The cabinet made the decision after consulting legal experts and the advocate general, who was present at the meeting, sources said. Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy & BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar said an ordinance was key to avoid delays & legal complications. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Per Rahul Gandhi's promise, Congress conducted a caste survey after coming to power. Two bills providing 42% reservation for BCs in education, employment, and local bodies were passed in the assembly and sent to the governor. But the Centre has been raising queries, stalling constitutional amendments needed for quota implementation. This ordinance reflects our firm commitment to BC political upliftment," Srinivas Reddy said. Ponnam said panchayat elections would be held by Sept 30, the deadline set by HC. "We stand by our BC declaration made in Kamareddy. We urge all parties to support this reservation for the smooth conduct of panchayat elections," he said. On concerns over SC's 50% cap on total reservations, Ponnam argued that it had already been breached through the Centre's EWS quota, while Tamil Nadu currently has over 60% reservation. He said BCs constitute 56% of Telangana's population, which justifies 42% reservation for them.

How key Telangana panel will gauge caste backwardness on a scale
A three-member expert committee constituted by the A Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government to study the state's caste enumeration exercise would measure relative backwardness of different castes on a scale of zero to 126 on 42 parameters. The Telangana Social Educational Employment Economic Caste Survey (2024) classified 243 castes in the state. This year, the Revanth Reddy government set up a three member committee comprising former Supreme Court Justice Sudarshan Reddy (chairman), writer and academic Kancha Ilaiah (vice chairman) and Congress leader Praveen Chakravarthy (member convener) to study the caste survey data and come up with a way of measuring the backwardness of different castes. Chakravarty, who is also the chairman of the Professionals' Congress, told The Indian Express that this is the first time in the country that 'a measure of backwardness is being done based on a wide variety of parameters'. The 42 parameters being used to measure backwardness of different castes include social circumstances, educational background, living standards, occupation, income, movable and immovable assets, and access to banking and finance. The parameters were designed on the basis of the Mandal Commission Report of 1980, which had used 11 parameters to compute relative backwardness. The Telangana panel's backwardness index has 17 points as positive indicators of development. These including inter-caste marriages, robust gender ratio, educational qualifications including diploma and above, private school education, English medium school education, government and private job profile, ownership of medium or large business, immigration to other countries for work, annual income of Rs 5 to 50 lakh, income tax payment, land holding of irrigated land or land between five to 20 acres, and households having a car and a fridge. As per this, households which have an annual income between Rs 5 and 50 lakh and own large tracts of land, for example, would get a smaller score on the measure of backwardness. On the other hand, those with annual income less than Rs 1 lakh or those who hold less than five acres of land will get a higher score of backwardness. The panel's negative indicators of backwardness include discrimination at places of worship, child marriage, women who have education below Class X, high school dropout rate, illiteracy, daily wage work, child labour, NREGA work, informal sector employment, no toilet, tap water and electricity. The Telangana caste survey had covered 3.55 crore people and collected information about 75 fields, including 'social, economic. educational, identity, occupational and living aspects of their daily lives. Of the 243 caste groups identified in the survey, 73 sub-castes constitute 96% of the population of Telangana. These include 10 sub-castes of Scheduled Castes (SCs), seven sub-castes of Scheduled Tribes (STs), 45 sub-castes of Backward Classes (BCs), and 11 sub-castes of Other Castes.

The chief minister is expected to return to the city on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Revanth-led team visited Hiroshima, where Revanth paid floral tributes to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. "We are ready to welcome many more as there are opportunities in clean energy, electric mobility, precision manufacturing, and green hydrogen," he said and invited the officials of the Hiroshima govt and business leaders to visit Telangana to see first-hand that Telangana can be their gateway to India and a platform for their global growth. Hiroshima Prefectural Assembly speaker took the team for a ceremonial visit to the Assembly Hall, where the CM pitched Telangana as one of the best investment destinations to Hiroshima Chambers of Commerce leaders.
