BSNL soft launches Quantum 5G FWA

New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the soft launch of BSNL Quantum 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access). This indigenous, SIM-less fixed-wireless-access solution delivers fibre-like speeds over 5G radio, according to an official release issued by the Ministry of Communications. BSNL made this announcement on June 18 in Hyderabad. The service was inaugurated at BSNL's Ameerpet Exchange by A Robert J Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL/MTNL. 'Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. It is the first SIM-less, 100 per cent home-grown customised 5G FWA for BSNL,' Ravi said. 'Hyderabad's tech-savvy ecosystem makes it the perfect launch pad for our next-generation access portfolio. Today is only a soft launch--many more cities and feature upgrades will follow,' he added. BSNL is the first Indian operator to showcase a production-grade SIM-less 5G service, which is built on BSNL's Direct-to-Device platform so the customer's CPE auto-authenticates - no physical SIM required. It has a fully indigenous stack with core, Radio Access Network (RAN), and CPE designed and integrated by Indian vendors under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme. Ameerpet recorded 980 Mbps DL / 140 Mbps UL with sub-10 ms latency--ideal for UHD streaming, cloud gaming, and remote work. Its self-install gateway reaches 85 per cent of Hyderabad households under the existing BSNL tower grid; no trenching or fibre pull is required. After the soft launch, the pilot will be expanded to Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh and will go live by September 2025. Introductory plans at Rs 999 for 100 Mbps and Rs 1499 for 300 Mbps. The same 5G SA core will support network-sliced, SLA-backed links for MSMEs and smart-manufacturing clusters. This is a controlled ('soft') launch intended for customer experience fine-tuning; nationwide commercial roll-out will follow after field feedback. Positioning BSNL as 5G pioneer with Quantum 5G FWA BSNL becomes the first Indian operator to offer indigenous 5G radio and SIM-less authentication. The event was attended by the Board of Directors of BSNL, CGM Telangana, CGM BBNW, academia & industry partners, and dignitaries from the Department of Telecommunications. BSNL remains committed to expanding its Technology and communication footprint across India, ensuring connectivity reaches every corner of the nation, including rural and remote areas. BSNL launches country's first indigenous 5g fixed wireless service

State-owned telecom firm BSNL has forayed into 5G fixed wireless service to provide home broadband service with its launch in Hyderabad, the company said on Friday. At present, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have been providing 5G Fixed Wireless Service (FWA) by using their 5G spectrum. "Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. It is the first SIM-less, 100 per cent home grown customised 5G FWA for BSNL. Today is only a soft launch - many more cities and feature upgrades will follow," BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A Robert J Ravi said. The service was launched on June 18. According to the details shared by BSNL, the company will expand the pilot project in Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Vishakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior and Chandigarh by September 2025. The company is initially charging Rs 999 for a 100 megabit per second (mbps) plan and Rs 1,499 for a 300 mbps plan. Through 5G FWA, telecom operators install a modem outside the subscriber's premise and transmit signals from their nearest base station for wireless broadband service. The technology does not require optical fibre for connection. BSNL posts Rs 280 crore Q4 profit, second straight quarter in green after 18 years

NEW DELHI: State-run telecom giant BSNL on Tuesday reported a net profit of Rs 280 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2025, marking its second consecutive profitable quarter after nearly two decades. The turnaround comes a year after the company posted a loss of Rs 849 crore in the same quarter. 'For the first time in 18 years, back-to-back quarterly profits, net profits, not just operating margins, for the second time running after 2007,' Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said while addressing reporters. BSNL had posted a profit after tax of Rs 262 crore in the October-December quarter of FY25. The company's cumulative loss for the full financial year has now narrowed sharply to Rs 2,247 crore, from Rs 5,370 crore in FY24. BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A Robert J Ravi attributed the performance to 'professional management, government support and relentless focus on both the top line and the bottom line.' 'BSNL is not just being revived, but redefined,' Ravi said, adding that the company is focused on cost discipline and accelerating 4G and 5G deployments to maintain momentum. 'We will not be chasing profits as our end goal. We will be redefining telecom excellence in public service. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Signature Global SPR, Luxury Living in Sector 71, Gurgaon Signature Global Book Now Undo When we consistently do the right things, provide excellent service, reach the unreached, innovate for inclusivity, profits will naturally follow,' he added. BSNL's operating revenue rose 7.8% year-on-year to Rs 20,841 crore in FY25, up from Rs 19,330 crore in the previous year. The Ministry of Communications noted that while profitability could moderate in the short term due to increased capital expenditure and spectrum investments, the long-term outlook remains strong. It cited nationwide 4G/5G rollouts using indigenous equipment, network-as-a-service initiatives, and backhaul fibre upgrades as key drivers of future growth. The ministry also highlighted BSNL's ongoing asset monetisation programme, which nearly doubled its proceeds last year and is expected to generate additional funds to support infrastructure expansion. BSNL discontinues PRBT service, invites fresh proposals for ad-funded AI-based model

NEW DELHI: State-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) has withdrawn personalised ringback tone or PRBT service for enterprise customers, and in a new request for proposals (RFP), sought artificial intelligence (AI)-backed, ad-funded services. The move, however, impacted closed user group (CUG) subscribers, including public sector firms that have taken bulk connections from the telco. 'Last month, BSNL closed down PRBT service, offered to large enterprise customers which was part of its offerings. The development has prompted BSNL call centres to flood with customer queries,' a source privy to the matter told ETTelecom. Enterprise users who were impacted include Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank, Coal India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Madhya Pradesh Police. BSNL, however, defended its position and said that the telco is coming up with an AI-led ad-funded model that would unlock a new revenue stream. 'We are transforming BSNL's PRBT service into a customer-driven, cloud-native or AI-driven platform that will offer personalized services, integrated seamlessly with streaming and over-the-top (OTT) apps,' BSNL Chairman, A Robert J Ravi, told ETTelecom. Personalised ringback tone or PBRT is a network-based service, offered by telecom carriers that enables subscribers to customise ringtone, allowing them to play a specified song or greeting to callers while dialling a subscriber. Further, Ravi said that they are examining an ad-funded model with dynamic content targeting to "enhance user engagement while unlocking new revenue streams" for BSNL. Last month, the state-run telco floated a tender that has now been extended with a deadline of May 16, 2025. Several state-owned telco customers who opted for PRBT service as a part of bundled long-term plans and recharges were left in the lurch without any prior intimation, and that may lead to subscriber churn, a person told on the condition of anonymity. The move comes at a time when the telco is grappling with challenges to retain its customers amid the next-generation or 4G network rollout. Bengaluru-headquartered OnMobile is offering PRBT services in East and South zones, while Hyderabad-based Digitral provides custom ringtones to BSNL's enterprise customers in North and West zones. Queries to OnMobile and Digitral did not elicit any response. However, the regulatory framework encourages service providers to intimate customers about any service change at least six months in advance. In its bid document, the telco indicated that it may "not recognise name tune as content" and shall not pay the revenue share to any PRBT partner. In addition, BSNL in its proposal said that it reserves the right to buy out the deployed PRBT solution along with hardware, software, and Intellectual Property (IP) at ₹100 upon a year-long contract completion.
