Amir's participation in ASEAN-GCC-China Summit to enhance stability in region, says envoy

QNA Doha Ambassador of Malaysia to Qatar HE Mohammad Faizal Razali has said that the participation of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in the 1st ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (today), will reveal new horizons for solid cooperation that will benefit both countries and enhance stability in the region and beyond. The ambassador said that HH the Amir's visit to Malaysia, coinciding with the Summit, will further strengthen the enduring ties between the two regions and foster deeper cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The Summit, he noted, would strengthen the bilateral partnership and establish a model for multilateral cooperation between ASEAN), the GCC countries, and China, through ongoing dialogue and joint efforts. This would enable full realisation of available potential and demonstrate a constructive commitment to the international community. He noted that Malaysia-Qatar relations are in a phase of strategic collaboration, with a strong focus on economic diplomacy. 'Both countries have common priorities in areas such trade and investments, high-technology, energy, sustainability and sports. Malaysia's robust manufacturing and service sectors complement Qatar's ambitious development plans, especially in line with Qatar's National Vision 2030,' he said. He noted that there is a growing emphasis on people-to-people ties, with a particular focus on education, tourism, and cultural exchanges, adding that Malaysia offers high-quality educational opportunities, as the number of Qatari students choosing Malaysia as a destination for higher education is increasing. He emphasised the two countries' commitment to deepening collaboration in areas of mutual concern, such as security, regional stability, and humanitarian efforts particularly the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, noting that the two countries have witnessed intensified high-level visits and discussions. He said that Qatar and Malaysia share a vision for a future of peace, prosperity, and deep interconnectedness, reiterating that the two countries' partnership is built on mutual trust, shared principles, and a firm commitment to multilateralism. The envoy explained that the two countries are fully prepared to drive regional growth and foster innovation, with bilateral trade increasing by nearly 49 percent in 2024, and cooperation growing across multiple sectors.

QNA Kuala Lumpur Ambassador of Qatar to Malaysia HE Salah bin Mohammed Al Sorour has affirmed that the visit of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Malaysia reflects the depth of fraternal relations between the two countries and enhances strategic cooperation in the fields of economy, investment and education. The ambassador said that the visit will open new horizons for enhancing political coordination and regional dialogue, in a way that supports the interests of the two peoples and strengthens partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He noted that HH the Amir's visit will focus on enhancing political coordination and the exchange of strategic visions, paving the way for broader future cooperation between the two countries across various sectors. He emphasised that the relations between Qatar and Malaysia are founded on mutual respect and shared interests, and have recently witnessed significant development across several areas. This progress reflect both countries' commitment to strengthening cooperation in fields of economy, investment, and education, as well as their coordination on regional and international issues, thereby opening new horizons for a strategic partnership that serves the interests of both peoples. Regarding the agreements signed between Qatar and Malaysia, the envoy noted that more than 40 agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) have been signed, covering diverse and important areas while work is currently underway to study over 20 new agreements and MoUs between the two sides. Regarding the mutual investments between Qatar and Malaysia, the Qatari ambassador affirmed that Qatari investments in Malaysia represent a fundamental pillar of the growing partnership between the two countries, especially in the energy and real estate sectors, such as the 'Pavilion' commercial project in Kuala Lumpur. The Qatar 2030 and 'Civil Malaysia' development visions open promising horizons for more major projects and future investments. On HH the Amir's participation in the ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit, he stated that HH the Amir's participation reflects Qatar's strategic vision to strengthen regional and international partnerships. 'We are confident that this participation will contribute to opening new horizons for constructive cooperation during the next phase, serving common interests and expanding opportunities for integration in various fields,' he added.

by HIDAYATH HISHAM PRIME Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Sonexay Siphandone will arrive in Malaysia on May 25 for his first official visit since assuming office in December 2022. Wisma Putra said the visit reaffirms the strong bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Laos, and comes ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related high-level meetings in Kuala Lumpur. 'Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone (picture) will be received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in an official welcoming ceremony held at Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, followed by a bilateral meeting,' it said in a statement today. The leaders are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, defence, education, renewable energy, transportation, tourism, capacity building, agriculture and the halal industry. The meeting will also involve a substantive exchange of views on regional and global issues, including ASEAN's role in responding to current geopolitical and economic challenges. 'The official visit, taking place ahead of the convening of the 46th ASEAN Summit, 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit on May 26 and 27, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, underscores the strong and enduring ties between Malaysia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic,' the ministry said. In 2024, bilateral trade between both countries amounted to US$21.9 million (RM99.7 million), with Malaysian exports at US$14.9 million (RM67.8 million) and imports at US$7 million (RM31.9 million). Malaysia is also the fifth largest foreign investor in Laos, with 46 registered projects worth a total of US$942 million (RM3.98 billion). Sectors include renewable energy, transport and logistics, telecommunications, construction, banking, and hotel services.

KUALA LUMPUR: The ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) today paid tribute to the former President of Vietnam, Tran Duc Luong, who died on Tuesday. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin extended the nation's deepest condolences and acknowledged the former leader's contributions, especially in the context of ASEAN cooperation. 'On behalf of Malaysia, we extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of the former president. 'Our Prime Minister has already conveyed his sympathies to the government and people of Vietnam, expressing our sorrow and recognising the late leader's service and dedication to the nation,' Amran said before the meeting commenced at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today. The SOM is a key preparatory phase ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit, scheduled to take place from May 26 to 27. The session began with remarks by Amran welcoming ASEAN SOM Leaders, Timor-Leste's SOM representatives and officials from the ASEAN Secretariat to the meeting. The 46th ASEAN Summit, themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', will gather leaders from the bloc's member states to discuss regional issues, foster economic cooperation and advance the principles of inclusivity and sustainability. Kuala Lumpur will also concurrently host the second ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit. Yesterday, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, noting that the late president served during a pivotal period in Vietnam's history. He credited Tran Duc Luong with steadfastly upholding the spirit of the Doi Moi (economic) reforms. Tran Duc Luong died at the age of 88, at 10.51 pm on Tuesday (May 20) at his residence in Hanoi, after a period of illness. He served as Deputy Prime Minister from September 1992 to August 1997 and as President from September 1997 to June 2006.
