MoS Pabitra Margherita to visit Malaysia for ASEAN-related meetings, also visit Cambodia
New Delhi, July 5 (UNI) Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will be visiting Malaysia where he will attend the Foreign Ministers' Meetings under the ASEAN framework, and will also visit Cambodia. During his official visit to Cambodia from July 7-8, MoS Margherita will be calling on the senior leadership of Cambodia, and would interact with ITEC/ ICCR Alumni, as also members of the Indian community. He would also review the extensive restoration and conservation work carried out by India at World Heritage Sites in Cambodia, that are also symbols of our shared culture, a statement said. Our excellent, close relations with Cambodia are underpinned by shared civilizational heritage and a robust, people-centric development partnership. The visit would further bolster our bilateral ties and provides an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on advancing initiatives and issues of mutual interest in diverse sectors. MoS Margherita will visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 10-11, at the invitation of the current ASEAN Chair, Malaysia. MoS will participate in the Foreign Ministers' Meetings under the ASEAN framework in the format of ASEAN-India, East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). India and ASEAN share cultural and civilisational bonds. ASEAN is the cornerstone of India's Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision. The visit will renew India's deep engagement with the ASEAN-centred regional architecture, underline our strong commitment to ASEAN unity, ASEAN centrality and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and strengthen the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. MoS (PM) is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other countries in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the margins of the ASEAN-related meetings, the statement added. UNI RN

India backs Malaysia's ASEAN vision, strengthens Myanmar ties
KUALA LUMPUR: India has pledged strong backing for Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair this year, endorsing its emphasis on regional stability and growth. High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, affirmed the alignment with Malaysia's ASEAN priorities during an interview with Bernama TV. Reddy stated, 'India is keen to align with the core themes of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship - 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', as well as ASEAN Centrality.' He further stressed India's interest in boosting connectivity with ASEAN via Myanmar, adding, 'We would like to see a prosperous and stable Myanmar, which is where our alignment comes with ASEAN.' The diplomat noted that ASEAN-India relations have progressed to a comprehensive strategic partnership. India's delegation will participate in the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur with a constructive approach. Pabitra Margherita, India's Minister of State for External Affairs, is set to attend, outlining India's regional agenda ahead of the ASEAN-India Summit in October. On bilateral relations, Reddy highlighted Malaysia's growing global influence and regional responsibilities. He pointed to the deep cultural and economic links, with Malaysia home to the largest Indian diaspora outside the U.S., exceeding two million people. 'A partner country like Malaysia is very significant for us. We call Malaysia part of our extended neighbourhood,' he said.

Slow progress of ASEAN-India FTA talks concerning
KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN Economic Ministers have raised concern over the slow progress of the bloc's free trade agreement (FTA) talks with India, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. 'We are concerned that the ASEAN-India FTA is not moving as fast as it should,' he told a press conference here today after the conclusion of 25th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit. Details for the slow progress were not revealed. The ASEAN-India Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation was signed during 2nd ASEAN-India Summit in 2003 -- the framework agreement laid a sound basis for the establishment of an ASEAN-India Free Trade Area, which covers goods, services and investment. Subsequently, the signing of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) was completed on Aug 13, 2009, in Bangkok and entered into force on Jan 1, 2010. As of 2023, ASEAN was India's seventh largest trading partner with a total trade of more than US$130 bilion (US$1=RM4.23), comprising US$44 billion of export and US$87 billion of import. Chaired by Tengku Zafrul, the 25th AEC Council Meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong; Brunei's Minister of Finance and Economy II Datuk Awang Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah; Cambodia's Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul; Vietnam's Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien; Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso; and Laos' Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaithong Kommasith. Other representatives included Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Allan B. Gepty (Philippines), Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong (Singapore), Minister of Commerce Pichai Naripthaphan (Thailand) and Deputy Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay (Timor-Leste). The 46th ASEAN Summit, being held under Malaysia's 2025 chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', marks Malaysia's fifth time chairing the regional bloc.
