ASEAN youths urge action on digital literacy, climate change

KUALA LUMPUR: Youths across ASEAN have called for urgent efforts to strengthen digital literacy and tackle climate change, identifying both as critical pillars for sustainable development and a greener future. Malaysian youth representative Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid said these issues received strong and encouraging feedback from ASEAN leaders, who expressed hope that the region's youth would take a more proactive role in shaping ASEAN's development, in line with ASEAN Vision 2045. 'We focused on youth development in a joint statement prepared by ASEAN youth representatives since last Wednesday,' he told reporters after the 4th ASEAN Leaders' Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth, held on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit here today. Izzat Afifi, who is also Malaysian Youth Council president, said the statement was well received, with leaders responding positively to the recommendations put forward by the youth delegates. During the session, which was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim along with ASEAN leaders and youth representatives, Izzat Afifi delivered the joint statement titled 'Youth for a Sustainable Future: Empowering Inclusion and Driving Change in ASEAN', outlining nine key points to enhance youth development across the region. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim. Meanwhile, Michelle Ann M. Villanueva of the National Youth Council of the Philippines expressed appreciation for the opportunity to elevate youth voices at the regional level. 'We are heard, we matter, and it is just an amazing experience because the people in the highest positions - those involved in policymaking and decision-making for every country in ASEAN - were there, and they heard what we had to say,' she said. The 46th ASEAN Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship, themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability.' This marks Malaysia's fifth time serving as ASEAN Chair, following previous terms in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. In conjunction with the summit, two high-level engagements -- the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit -- will also be convened, aimed at advancing regional and inter-regional cooperation.

REGION - SARAWAK > NEWS KUCHING, May 13 (Bernama) -- The International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo 2025 was officially launched today at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, marking a key milestone for East Malaysia and the ASEAN region as Malaysia assumes the ASEAN chairmanship. The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia, which organises the two-day event in partnership with Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd, said ICW Borneo 2025 serves as a strategic platform to advance sustainable construction, promote green energy innovation and accelerate digital transformation in the built environment. 'It brings together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and innovators to drive a future-ready construction agenda aligned with ASEAN Vision 2045,' it said in a statement today. bootstrap slideshow Held concurrently with the summit is BuildXpo, ICW's official trade exhibition, which features 32 local and international exhibitors across 55 booths displaying cutting-edge technologies, smart building systems, and sustainable construction materials. The exhibitors include CIDB IBS, Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), American Welding Society, Microleap, Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd and Serendah Steel Manufacturing Sdn Bhd. The statement said several specialised conferences and workshops are also taking place, including the Seminar on Construction Revolution (CR4.0), Construction Manager Programme, Construction Project Manager Programme, and Facility Management Accreditation. 'On May 15, technical site visits will bring participants to key infrastructure and energy facilities in Sarawak, including the Sejingkat Power Plant, the Hydrogen Production Plant and Refueling Station, and the Petros Darul Hana Multifuel Station,' it said. CIDB chief executive Zainora Zainal said the event brings together the region's brightest minds and most forward-thinking organisations to drive the Construction 4.0 agenda, enhance cross-border collaboration, and promote sustainable and inclusive growth across ASEAN's built environment. She added that as the first ICW to be held in East Malaysia, the event not only sets the stage for the 27th edition of ICW and BuildXpo in Kuala Lumpur this October but also underscores East Malaysia's growing role as a hub for sustainable development and regional cooperation in the construction sector.

Malaysia Has Done A Great Job As ASEAN Chair At A Critical Juncture -- FPCI Chairman

By Rohani Ibrahim KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has done a great job being the Chair of ASEAN during this critical period, said Founder and Chairman of Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Dr Dino Patti Djalal. According to the former Indonesian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, this is a very difficult time for world affairs, and the global system is under duress. bootstrap slideshow 'But Malaysia's chairmanship has been steady. It has consulted all stakeholders. And I do believe that Malaysia's chairmanship, when it ends, it is not just going to be a normal ending. 'It is going to be something that will lay the plan for the next 20 years. That is huge achievement,' he said in his opening remarks at a public discussion titled 'Road to ASEAN Vision 2045: When Expectations Meet the Reality', organised by the FPCI here on Thursday. Dino, who was also the former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, said that as an arms race is taking place in many parts of the world, ASEAN needs to come closer and decide what to do together, especially to maintain the region's resilience. Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri ShamsuI Iskandar Mohd Akin, who was one of the panelists, said that for ASEAN to realise the ASEAN Community Vision (ACV) 2045, the institutional frameworks must be more agile while still respecting the principles of inclusivity and sovereignty. 'Streamlining decision-making and strengthening ASEAN's capacity to act in real time will be essential to addressing both regional and global issues efficiently, and maintaining ASEAN's relevance,' he added. Sharing his vision on ASEAN in 2045, Shamsul Iskandar expressed hoped that by then, all ASEAN citizens would be able travel, live, and study easily across the region.

ASEAN Must Diversify Trade Ties Amid Global Uncertainty, Says Economist

By Wan Muhammad Aslah Wan Razali KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- ASEAN must urgently diversify its trade and investment relationships to strengthen resilience amid global uncertainty, said Senior Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, Dr Jayant Menon, during the FPCI Forum on ASEAN Community Building: Road to ASEAN Vision 2045 held here on Thursday (April 24). Menon, a veteran economist and former Asian Development Bank (ADB) official, said the region can no longer afford to rely heavily on any single economic partner, citing the increasingly erratic global trade environment, particularly recent efforts by the United States (US) to reshore industries and reduce foreign engagement. bootstrap slideshow 'Being too heavily dependent on any one country is an issue. A crisis presents an opportunity to explore more varied trade and investment patterns that reduce the risk of country-specific shocks,' he said. Menon said ASEAN's 2045 vision -- anchored on resilience, inclusion and sustainability -- requires urgent attention to structural reforms in labour mobility, human capital development, and climate action, areas where the region still lags. 'We have to bite the bullet. Labour mobility within ASEAN needs to be addressed properly before 2045. The work has to start now,' he stated. On sustainability, Menon urged ASEAN to pursue green growth regardless of external political shifts, including the return of climate scepticism in the US. 'We must not let that derail our efforts,' he said, stressing the importance of aligning economic development with environmental goals. Touching on the challenges of intra-regional inequality, he said that while development gaps between ASEAN member states have narrowed, inequality within countries is growing across gender, ethnicity, and geography.
