Horror moment boy, 9, attacked by shark
A nine-year-old boy has recalled the horror moment his board was smashed to pieces after he was attacked by a shark on the NSW south coast. Bowie Daly was surfing along Tathra Beach, a seaside area on the Sapphire Coast in southern NSW, on Thursday when he suddenly felt a 'tug' at the back of his surfboard. Speaking to the ABC, the nine-year-old said he 'suddenly started drowning' but got back up onto the board. 'When I came back up, I saw a giant back and I realised it was a shark and then I started screaming for help,' he said. ABC Credit: ABC While Bowie escaped virtually unscathed – suffering only a scratch and puncture to his wetsuit – the shark destroyed his beloved surfboard. His father Simon explained to the ABC his son could have 'lost his whole leg' if he was on the board properly. 'We got really lucky,' he said. Mr Daly said it was his 'worst nightmare' realising his son had been attacked, before paddling out with another group of surfers to help his son. 'Those seconds and that 20m of paddling was definitely the most intense of my life,' he said. A NSW Ambulance spokesman confirmed paramedics had been called over the incident but reported no injuries. The attack occurred at Tathra Beach on the NSW south coast. Supplied / Google Maps Credit: Supplied According to the Australian Shark-Incident Database (ASID), there has been an average of 20 incidents in which people have been injured by sharks. On average, there were 2.8 fatalities each year and seven incidents in which the person was uninjured. Three fatal shark attacks have been recorded so far in 2025 – one each in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. In January, 28-year-old Lance Appleby disappeared while surfing off Granites Beach, south of Streaky Bay in SA, after being attacked by a shark. The shark caused damage to Bowie's wetsuit. ABC Credit: ABC His body has not been recovered and subsequent searches by authorities have been called off. A month later, Charlize Zmuda, 17, died after being bitten by a shark while swimming at Bribie Island's Woorim Beach. In March, 37-year-old Steven Payne was surfing at Wharton Beach, about 780km southeast of Perth, when he was attacked by a shark. His body also could not be recovered. Rising ocean temperatures due to climate change, in addition to a greater number of people swimming in the ocean, have been attributed to the steadily-rising number of attacks over the last 10 years. Bowie's father Simon Daly said the pair 'got really lucky'. ABC Credit: ABC Bond University Associate Professor and shark researcher Dr Daryl McPhee said rising water temperatures rise along the coast, specifically around the Greater Sydney region, meant bull sharks were expanding their search for food – moving further south of Sydney and down the coast. She said an increase in prey in the area – such as humpback whales – had driven the increase of shark sightings and attacks.

Industry Reveals 8 Timely New Home Design Principles For Older Adults
Every day in the U.S., 10,000 people turn 65, and the number of older adults will more than double over the next several decades to top 88 million people, according to AARP. Are you one of them? I'll hit that milestone by the end of the year. The changes that impact many of our bodies and lives as we grow into our 'golden years' also impact how we live in our homes. The American Society of Interior Designers wants to make those spaces healthier, safer and more livable. Here are the principles they espoused in a June 2025 report called 'Reimagining Aging: A New Way Forward for Adaptive Living in the Home.' Imperative "Design is not just about aesthetics—it's about dignity," said Khoi Vo, ASID's CEO. He sees the report as a 'call to action for designers to lead in creating homes that evolve with people's needs—supporting independence, reducing isolation, and enabling wellness through thoughtful, inclusive environments.' Interior designers and other building and design professionals understand that most older adults don't like the 'A word,' and don't like to contemplate, much less discuss the changes helpful to aging at home. It's something I realized more than a decade ago, after earning a Certified Aging in Place designation. At the same time, many home buyers and homeowners are prioritizing one story living or first floor bedrooms and three-quarter bathrooms, barrier free showers, smart home features and other home elements that make living easier and safer. Terminology Rather than talking about 'aging in place design,' designers began speaking of 'longevity design,' 'inclusive design' and ASID's 'adaptive design.' Another term that's been around for decades, 'universal design,' has come to be associated with designing accessible spaces for individuals of all ages with physical challenges. It's more than that, but its connection to disability has turned off some clients who see themselves as vibrant and active but forward thinking. Real Estate Impacts As the Global Wellness Institute shared in its 2025 report, covered here, the market for wellness real estate has grown by 19.5% annually from 2019 to 2024, compared to a 5.5% average growth rate for traditional construction. Part of that trend ties to the pandemic, with an increased imperative for indoor air and water quality. An even larger part ties to an aging population globally and domestically. Designing your home to be wellness-enhanced and aging-friendly can potentially increase its resale value, should you decide to move in the future. Adaptive Design Principles ASID identified and described eight principles to help design professionals create spaces that are highly responsive to the needs of aging and diverse populations. This principle is about fostering the ability for older homeowners to live independently in their home or a loved one's, empowered to handle daily personal and household tasks safely and easily. It's also designed to reduce the risk of injury, such as falling trying to reach a window shade high on the wall or getting in an out of a tub. In 2023, the Surgeon General of the United States published a report called 'Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.' In it, he wrote that loneliness is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death, ranking it in severity above obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. With nearly three in 10 adults aged 65 and older living alone today, loneliness is a potential condition that can be addressed through design by employing strategies that reduce isolation. This relates to reducing isolation through the use of smart home technology to facilitate social engagement even when direct physical connection isn't possible. In practical terms, that can be creating comfortable seating, lighting and stands for using full-sized tablets to enhance online visits with family and friends. (I use an iPad and Messenger video to work out with a friend three time zones away!) Creating a home that is 'visitable,' a design term relating to the ability of someone with mobility devices to enter the residence and use its restrooms and gathering areas, makes social engagement easier for older adults, some of whom may need barrier-free spaces to spend time with the host. This is about creating easy indoor-outdoor access and bringing wellness features into home spaces to the greatest extent possible for healthier living. This principle is about reducing the physical barriers to aging at home, and supporting environmental health and comfort through the home's building and design materials, ventilation, climate and water delivery systems. This is about addressing financial challenges to safely aging at home, which can be difficult for some. Finding solutions can reduce the even greater costs of injury and institutional settings that often result from falls. This principle is about establishing conversations early with clients on the fundamental strategies to make their homes as safe and accessible as possible for them as they age. It's also about creating connections with community leaders and trade partners to educate about this imperative. Conclusions These are excellent starting points for discussion with your real estate professional if you're home shopping. If you're also shopping for a pro to partner with in your search, consider prioritizing a Senior Real Estate Specialist, especially if you're relocating to an unfamiliar area. If you're planning to remodel an existing home or build an addition, be sure to ask the contractor or designer you're interviewing for their knowledge and experience with adaptive design, aging design, inclusive design, longevity designer or other signifiers of this specialty.
