RPF's cyber cell tracks, recovers lost mobiles

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The cyber cell of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the South Central Railway (SCR) has dealt with 169 complaints of stolen mobiles in July. Out of these complaints, the cell blocked 139 mobile phones, traced 52 devices, recovered 21 mobile phoned and returned 9 phones to the owners, show official data. "The RPF of SCR has intensified its efforts under 'Operation Amanat' by effectively leveraging digital tools to trace and recover lost mobile phones. Through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, the Cyber Cell has been driving the recovery operations across the zone," said A Sridhar, chief public relations officer of SCR. SCR authorities said the RPF is authorized to facilitate the recovery of lost devices only when the incident is reported and registered through Rail Madad, and no FIR has been lodged by the complainant in the case. "The CEIR portal enables IMEI-based tracking and blocking of lost or stolen devices. However, it is the RPF's dedicated Cyber Cell that has been leading mobile recovery efforts across the zone," Sridhar said. SCR general manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava said that the RPF Cyber Cell has become a key force in restoring stolen or misplaced property through digital intelligence. Vijayawada flower market to be shifted to Ajith Singh Nagar

VMC Estate Officer A Sridhar said the market, located on Railway land, must be vacated following objections from Railway officials during a recent meeting with the Vijayawada MP. The Vijayawada Flower Market is the largest wholesale flower market in AP, with daily footfall from cities such as Hyderabad, Khammam, Ongole, and Tadepalligudem. On average, 3 to 10 tonnes of flowers are traded daily, rising to 20 tonnes during festivals. Flowers are sourced from Bengaluru, Kolar, Chikballapur, V Kota and Kuppam, while jasmine and crossandra come from Pedavadlapudi and Mylavaram. Around 5,000 workers, farmers, and traders depend on the market, which comprises 81 shops and 112 members. Originally located at Panja Centre, the market was shifted to its current site due to traffic issues. Traders now pay Rs 4,000 in monthly rent to VMC. Despite the planned move, traders have raised concerns. G Ashok Kumar, president of the Wholesale Flower Market Association, urged the government to consider relocating the market to GS Raju Road near Rythu Bazar, where 92 cents of land is available. 'Ajith Singh Nagar is far from the city, and has three nearby burial grounds, which may discourage customers. We're willing to build shops ourselves if land is allocated at GS Raju Road,' he said. Another trader, Gangadhar Reddy, said no prior notice was given and emphasised that the current location—close to the bus stand and railway station—offers easy access for buyers and transporters.

More rescuers join search for trapped workers in India's tunnel collapse

Operations have continued for the seventh day to rescue several workers who remained trapped in a partially collapsed tunnel in southern India. More heavy equipment has been deployed to hasten the search as India's South Central Railway announced on Friday that its rescue team had joined the mission to locate the trapped workers in the town of Nagarkurnool in Telangana state. Spokesman A Sridhar said railway experts have the expertise in cutting heavy metals using equipment such as a plasma cutter and Brocho cutting machine. Boring machines, high-grade shutters and debris removal machinery were also brought to the location to assist rescuers, A Sridhar said. India's national disaster response force had earlier joined rescue efforts on the night of the incident on February 22. The accident occurred after a sudden inflow of water and soil caused part of the tunnel to cave in. State Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao told reporters earlier this week that 42 workers swam to safety shortly after the collapse, adding that rescuers had called out to trapped workers through the rubble but had not received any response. Reports said the tunnel's ventilation system remained functional, which ensured the supply of oxygen to the trapped workers. On Thursday, Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy gave assurance that the rescue operation would be completed in the next two or three days, and tunnel work would resume in two or three months. 'This is an unfortunate incident, but we are committed to bringing them out safely,' Reddy told reporters, adding that a coordinated search and rescue effort was under way. Accidents on large infrastructure construction sites are common in India. In 2023, 41 Indian workers were rescued after a marathon 17-day operation helped pull them out of a partly collapsed Himalayan road tunnel in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
