Thieves are targeting these luxury truck models in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield is near the top of the list when it comes to car thefts in the country, and now police are sounding the alarm that luxury pickup trucks are getting ripped off. An undercover BPD officer says thieves are using auto diagnostic tools to start the trucks and disconnect OnStar systems so the trucks can't be tracked. They're even punching through the glass to open the door to bypass the push button start. Four people arrested on suspicion of stealing multiple Arvin Public Works trucks: Arvin PD 'The police department said that they're an organized ring and they're coming to Kern County to steal trucks to fill their orders,' Chief Operating Officer John Pitre with the Motor City Auto Center said. Over the last two months, there's been a surge of high-end truck thefts targeting 2018 and 2023 GMC Sierra half-ton and three-quarter ton pickups with the AT4 or Denali trims. 'Exotic suspension systems, wheels and tires, big brakes, high-power engines, leather interiors. I don't really think they're going after these trucks for a particular feature. I think they're looking for the entire truck,' Pitre said. Pitre said if you own one of the trucks, Motor City customer or not, to send an email to help@ or call 661-559-9595 to protect your pickup. 'We have a way to catalog those vehicles in such a way that if they are stolen, we can recover them,' he said. Bakersfield ranks 2nd in metro areas with highest car thefts in 2022 study Police say truck thefts are happening mostly along the Panama Lane and Buena Vista Road corridors. Brock Butler's GMC Heavy Duty 2500 truck got broken into. 'They ripped my deck out and messed with the whole brain of my truck. They popped my key cylinder and got right in the door,' he said. Brock Butler builds pools. It took three men five hours to dig a hole while their heavy duty pickups are out in the open. But, Butler has a hack. 'If you put an aftermarket handle that doesn't have a key cylinder on it, that's worked for me,' he said. California led the country in total vehicle thefts per capita last year. Bakersfield was ranked the third on the list for stolen vehicles in 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'Not shocking at all. My co-worker's truck was stolen like, I think it was six times in three months,' said Butler. San Francisco was first and Memphis second on the list. Lock your vehicle and park it in the garage, behind a secure fence or box it in. Add a GPS tracker so authorities can find your vehicle faster if it gets stolen. Police say the easiest way to protect your vehicle is to disconnect your battery. That way thieves can't even start your pickup. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The decision came following the meeting with Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chief of Defence Staff Gen on Tuesday. During the high-level meeting, PM Modi affirmed that it is our national resolve to deal a crushing blow to terrorism. The PM expressed complete faith and confidence in the professional abilities of the Indian Armed Forces and said that they have complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of our response. Hours after PM Modi's meeting, Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar warned on Wednesday of an Indian military attack within the next 24 to 36 hours, based on what he described as "credible intelligence" of Indian intentions to employ last week's Pahalgam attack as a pretext for aggression. Tarar made the warning through social media, stating, "Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to launch a military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours using the Pahalgam incident as a false pretext. Any act of aggression will be met with a decisive response. India will be fully responsible for any serious consequences in the region." The warning follows growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after one killed 26 people at a tourist resort in Indian-held Kashmir. India has blamed Pakistani elements for the attack, which has led to a series of retaliatory actions from both nations.

GMC rounds out Sierra EV trim lineup for 2026 with off-road, entry versions
GMC is adding entry-level and off-road versions of the electric Sierra full-size pickup for the 2026 model year, rounding out a lineup that launched first at the top end. The Sierra EV will come with the AT4 off-road variant and the base Elevation trim level, in addition to the high-end Denali, GMC said March 27. The Sierra EV also will have three different battery choices with varying ranges at multiple price points. The pickup, built at General Motors' Factory Zero electric vehicle assembly plant in Detroit, will start at $64,495 for the base Elevation with Standard Range and rise to $100,695 for the Denali with Max Range, including shipping. The Sierra EV launched for the 2024 model year with a fully loaded Denali Edition 1 variant that started at $99,495. 'With these additional trims and customer options, the Sierra EV is positioned right in the heart of the premium truck market,' Jaclyn McQuaid, global vice president of Buick-GMC, said in a statement. GMC said it will share range estimates for the battery options — Standard Range, Extended Range and Max Range — closer to when the pickups start to reach dealerships this summer. Standard Range and Extended Range will be sold on the Elevation trim level, while the AT4 will be offered with either Extended Range or Max Range. All three ranges will be available on the Denali. Towing capacity ranges from 8,500 pounds with a Standard Range battery to 12,500 pounds with Extended Range on the Elevation and Denali trim levels, the brand said. GMC said the AT4 variant will have a lifted coil suspension, 35-inch all-terrain tires, 2 inches of extra ground clearance and standard four-wheel steer with the brand's CrabWalk feature. Terrain Mode will give drivers extra maneuverability and control. The base Elevation trim will feature the vehicle's 16.8-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen, along with GMC's MultiPro tailgate and 18-inch wheels. AT4 and Elevation buyers both will be able to add optional features. The brand said it also enhanced the Denali trim level for 2026 with more exterior colors and two optional packages with additional content and features. Have an opinion about this story?
