Moment masked gang drive their Volkswagen into a Co-op - before driving off with the cash machine

A gang of masked robbers smashed a car into a Co-op store in a dramatic ram-raid before making off with the cash machine. The brazen criminals drove a dark Volkswagen Touareg straight into the front of the convenience store in Christchurch, Dorset, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Witnesses reported seeing the group using an array of tools to rip the ATM from the wall and haul it into the back of the vehicle. A second vehicle, a blue Audi RS3, was also spotted speeding away from the scene shortly after the raid, which took place at around 2:30am. Police were called and arrived within minutes, cordoning off the area at 2:43am as a full investigation was launched. A spokesperson from Dorset police confirmed: 'A full investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the incident.' The Co-op store has since re-opened, but staff and residents have been left shaken by the ordeal. A spokesperson for the Co-op said: 'There was an incident in the early hours of yesterday morning where there was an attack on the community's ATM. 'We appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward to Police, who are investigating. 'We would like to thank the Police for the speed of their response. The store is now reopen to serve the community.' No arrests have yet been made, and police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward. It comes after two masked robbers were captured on CCTV as they ripped out a shop till while threatening a shopkeeper with a metal wrench. The terrified member of staff was standing behind the counter of the shop in Newport, South Wales, when it was raided by the masked suspects in December. Footage from security cameras shows one robber repeatedly slamming the large metal tool on the shop counter before ripping out the till. And earlier this month, two masked teenagers who robbed a great-grandmother in her own home before leaving her alone for hours as she lay injured on the floor and crying out for 'mummy', were locked up for two years in a youth detention centre. Joy Middleditch, 82, died just days after she was discovered seriously injured inside her bungalow in Pakefield, Suffolk, by her family, having been left on the floor for 12 hours after she was burgled and robbed. She was conscious and breathing, but found to have five broken ribs and bruising before dying in James Paget Hospital, Great Yarmouth on March 27, 2023.

In unusual crime: Des Moines police investigating four ATM thefts this year

Des Moines police are investigating a recent spate of ATM thefts this year. Four machines have been stolen from a variety of businesses in 2025. Like most burglaries, the thefts are difficult to investigate since offenders took efforts to conceal their identity and avoid detection, said police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. They've been committed at night and offenders have covered their faces and worn gloves. Detectives have suspects in these ongoing investigations but no arrests have been made as of May 15. Typically, suspects have used stolen vehicles to force entry into a business or pull the 1,000-pound ATM free from its mounted position and then haul it away, Parizek said. It's not the first time Des Moines police have had to investigate ATM thefts: Two men were arrested for using explosives to rob ATMs in Des Moines in November 2023. Authorities alleged the two men stole at least $60,000 in cash around Des Moines. That was the first time the Des Moines Police Department saw criminals use explosives to dismount an ATM, Parizek said at the time. More recently, a driver plowed through the windows that enclosed the game room at The Dam Pub, the quirky eatery with an '80s and '90s theme in Beaverdale at 2710 Beaver Ave. early in the morning March 1. The vehicle occupants stole the ATM from inside the restaurant, according to the restaurant's owners. Later that morning, the restaurant was filled with diners ordering brunch at the bar and in booths while a handyman cleaned up the glass and made temporary repairs to the front façade of the building. Co-owner Renee Way said she was shocked when she found out people had stolen the restaurant's ATM. At first Way and her husband thought it was just an accident because a driver who had a medical emergency drove an SUV into the front of nearby restaurant a few months prior. 'When the police called, the alarm went off, we showed up and they just thought that it was maybe a medical emergency or something,' Way said. 'When I showed up, I walked in and said, 'Well the ATM is gone.' That's when we knew it was a theft.' The ATM, which had about $3,000, was later found near the south side Walmart with the cash still inside, Way said. The damage to the store was about $10,000. Although the ATM was found, they have opted not to get another. But the owners have decided to keep the marks from the car on their floor for the memory. Two Romanian nationals accused of $800k ATM card-skimming scheme

Two Romanian nationals have been accused of stealing $800,000 from ATMs across Sydney in a cunning scheme. The Australian Federal Police arrested the men, aged 48 and 41, for their alleged roles in the scheme and they have been charged with money laundering and stealing financial information. Police allege the men inserted skimmers – thin metal devices – into ATMs that captured the financial data stored on the magnetic strips of bank cards and was accessed upon retrieval. Using the skimmers, the men are accused of cloning bank cards with the stolen data and defrauding victims of more than $800,000. The skimming scheme was used on ATMs across Sydney suburbs such as Chatswood, Darlinghurst, Burwood and Haymarket, and in the Illawarra suburbs of Warilla, Shellharbour, Fairy Meadow, Warrawong and Berkeley. The men obscured pinhole cameras on ATM machines to avoid detection, police allege. Investigations began in April after banks provided intelligence about Sydney ATMs being tampered with. A search warrant was executed by the AFP at the men's home in Chatswood and a storage facility in Homebush on Thursday. The pair were soon arrested and a third man was questioned and released pending further inquiries. AFP Superintendent Marie Andersson said the card scheme 'stole more than $800,000 from hardworking Australians and went straight into the pockets of criminals'. 'These brazen schemes hurt hardworking Australians who are already feeling the financial pinch,' she said. 'The men who were living in Chatswood are scheduled to appear before Hornsby Local Court today charged with money-laundering offences, dishonestly obtaining or dealing in personal financial information and other passport offences.' Ms Andersson said the number of alleged victims was unknown but was likely to be in the thousands. 'It's extremely difficult to detect if an ATM has been tampered, so we encourage (alleged) victims if they see if there's been some unauthorised transactions in their bank account to financial institutions, go to the Australian cybercrime security website and they will be able to report it through that avenue,' she said The pair are set to appear before court on Friday to face charges of laundering money worth $100,000 or more and dishonestly obtaining or dealing in personal financial information. The 48-year-old man was also charged with importing the skimmers with intent to dishonestly obtain or deal in personal financial information. Meanwhile, the 41-year man has also been slapped with additional passport offences, including possession of a false foreign travel document and submitting false or misleading information to a reporting entity. Police say if convicted, the men will face a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment for the money-laundering charge and three years' imprisonment for possession and dishonest use of financial information.
