There is nobody in tennis quite like Corentin Moutet. Although he's far from a household name that transcends the sport like Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, hardcore tennis fans have all the time in the world for a player like Moutet. Not only is he a great underdog story as a 5-foot-11 grinder who has had to work his way up the professional tennis ladder, but he's also got a showman quality that is all too rare in the sport these days. Moutet is a creative shot-maker, but he's also got a short fuse and is no stranger to making a scene on the court. The Frenchman also happens to be playing some of the best tennis of his career of late, and comes into the qualifying rounds at the Canadian Masters having just made it to the semifinals at ATP Washington. Moutet took full advantage of being awarded a 'lucky loser' spot in Washington by defeating Alexandre Muller, Dan Evans, and Daniil Medvedev before losing to Alex de Minaur in the semis. Jenson Brooksby during Wimbledon. Susan Mullane-Imagn Images The 26-year-old now faces a quick turnaround for his showdown with Jenson Brooksby in Toronto on Monday. After taking all of 2024 off, Brooksby has been quite impressive this season. The American won a title in Houston in March and was the runner-up in Eastbourne last month. Brooksby's once promising career looks to be reignited. Moutet and Brooksby come into Monday's match in decent form, and the stylistic matchup – neither player is going to smash the other off the court – should lead to a long, winding match. ATP Washington picks: Ben Shelton vs. Gabriel Diallo odds, prediction
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. Thursday's showdown between Ben Shelton and Gabriel Diallo at the ATP Washington Open may not break into the mainstream, but tennis fanatics and bettors will consider it a can't-miss tilt. Shelton and Diallo are two rising powers in the sport, and they both should be well-suited for the North American hard-court swing, which favors players who can overpower their opponents with their serve and groundstrokes. Shelton, the World No. 8, is a -200 favorite over Diallo on Thursday. ATP Washington: Shelton vs. Diallo odds, prediction Diallo defeated Shelton in their only professional meeting, but that came back in 2022 on the Challenger circuit, so there's nothing you can really learn from that result. Not only are the two big-serving stars much better players now, but they're also in terrific form. Shelton is just a couple of weeks removed from a trip to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, where he lost to Jannik Sinner. Shelton had dropped just one set prior to his loss to the eventual champion. Diallo was stopped in the second round of Wimbledon by No. 4 Taylor Fritz, but he took him to five sets, ending a terrific spell on the grass in 2025. The Montreal native won a title at the Libema Open as part of a 9-3 run on the lawn. This is the first tournament for each player since Wimbledon, but both Shelton and Diallo looked terrific in straight-set wins in the Round of 32. Ben Shelton in action at ATP Washington Open. Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Both of these players are unabashed about how they want matches to unfold. Shelton and Diallo boast two of the best serves on tour, and they'll want to win quick, cheap points when they're starting with the ball. Given the stylistic matchup, it's no surprise that the Over/Under is set at 24.5 games, with juice on the over. In all likelihood, this match will be decided by which player holds their nerve in tiebreaks, and that really narrows the margin for error for both players. In this kind of matchup, I'd lean towards the underdog, especially a punchy one like Diallo. ATP Washington picks: Dan Evans vs. Corentin Moutet odds, prediction
New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. If I could get everybody in the sporting world to watch one non-Grand Slam tennis match this year, it may be Thursday's tilt between Dan Evans and Corentin Moutet at ATP Washington. This is a matchup for the tennis sickos, the ones who stick with the sport from the first ball Down Under until they turn off the lights at the ATP Finals in November. Neither Moutet nor Evans has ever cracked the top 20; neither of them has ever been beyond the fourth round at a Grand Slam, and they both are under six feet tall. They have more than that in common. Both players are known for their craft, guile, and, at times, their temper. Moutet has become especially renowned for his on-court antics, but Evans is no stranger to an outburst himself. ATP Washington: Moutet vs. Evans odds, predictions In addition to their temperament, Moutet and Evans are also terrific shot-makers. Given their size and lack of power, they need to be creative with how they approach matches, so getting them both on court at the same time could produce fireworks. Dan Evans in action at ATP Washington. Geoff Burke-Imagn Images After a couple of years toiling on the Challenger Circuit and then on the ATP, Moutet has put together some strong showings in 2025. The Frenchman has found a niche as a thorn-in-the-side player, and has used that style to upset two top-10 opponents (Taylor Fritz, Holger Rune) in the last three months. Moutet's win over Fritz came as part of an 8-3 stretch, which was one of the best of his career. Unfortunately, that run was halted by Y.B. Wu during qualifiers for ATP Washington. Moutet would get into the main draw as a lucky loser, however, and he defeated Alexandre Muller, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 32. Evans, a former winner at this event, had an up-and-down grass-court season, but he was able to grind out wins over Zizou Bergs and Alex Michelsen on the hard courts in D.C. Moutet is the younger player and carries a much higher ranking than Evans right now, but the Englishman still has some life left in his legs, and he clearly likes the conditions at this tournament. In a matchup between two similar players, I see no reason why the odds should be this wide. This thing could go in a million different directions, which is good news for the underdog. ATP Washington best bets: Learner Tien vs. Andrey Rublev odds, picks, predictions Wednesday
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. There have been some upsets already at ATP Washington, but that shouldn't be a surprise. Given its position in the tennis calendar, just a week after the conclusion of Wimbledon, there are often some overcooked favorites in the Capital, which leads to a couple of upstarts making deep runs. Last year's final featured Sebastian Korda beating Flavio Cobolli, while Dan Evans surprised everyone with a title in 2023, beating Tallon Griekspoor in the showpiece. Nick Kyrgios took home the trophy in 2022, which wasn't a shocker, but the fact that it was Yoshi Nishioka opposite him in the final certainly was a shock. There are some real heavyweights in this field, like Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, and Alex de Minaur, but don't be shocked if we see another dark horse lift the trophy Sunday. One such candidate is rising American Learner Tien. ATP Washington: Learner Tien vs. Andrey Rublev odds, pick After winning three Challenger titles in 2024, Tien really announced his presence by making it to the finals of the ATP Next Generation Tournament at the end of last year. Tien carried that momentum into 2025, getting all the way to the Round of 16 at the Australian Open and then the Round of 16 in Acapulco. The change from hard courts to clay slowed Tien's roll, but don't be surprised if the 19-year-old from Irvine, Calif., finds his form during the next few weeks. Andrey Rublev is playing his second tournament since the conclusion of Wimbledon. AFP via Getty Images Tien has plenty of work to do to become a well-rounded ATP player, but he's shown serious chops on the hard court and could give Andrey Rublev a lot to think about Wednesday. Rublev's reputation as one of the most consistent players on tour has taken a hit this season. For years, you could set your watch to the Russian. He would beat the players he was supposed to, and then struggled when he had to step up in competition. This year has seen Rublev fall to lesser players, which has caused him to drop out of the top 10 in May and June. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps Rublev's inconsistency is one concern, but he could also be quite fatigued after going to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, then playing in Los Cabos last week. A trip to D.C. is probably the last thing the 27-year-old needs right now. Tien should be the fresher of the two competitors, and he has the hard-court game to stop Rublev on Wednesday.
