Augustana's Greenwaldt claims National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AUGUSTANA) — Of all the accolades that Augustana Junior Bryn Greenwaldt has earned in her short career, there was one missing… until Wednesday afternoon. Greenwaldt became the first National Champion in program history after winning the 50 free at the DII National Championships. The back-to-back national runner-up in the 50 free had it rolling early when she smashed an NCAA DII record by posting the first ever sub-22 second time, finishing in 21.92 to earn the top prelim time. In the final, she made the turn at 10.67 and fended off the reigning national champion from UIndy by .15 seconds, finishing in a time of 22.09. What an amazing day at the pool,' said head coach Andrew Makepeace. 'Capping off the evening with Bryn bringing home the first national championship in program history was extremely special. She may not have broken the record she said in the prelims, but winning and getting your hand on the wall first can be more important sometimes.' Her day did not finish there, though. In the final women's event of the night, Augustana earned First Team All-America honors in the 200 medley relay with a fifth place finish and program record time of 1:39.82. The Vikings held a lead in the first 50 and steadily maneuvered through to keep a top-five position. Greenwaldt led off and was joined by Nesrine Jelliti, Angelina Chan and Makoa Montgomery. It is the second consecutive season that the core four finished fifth in the national championships. 'Breaking a school record in the most competitive event with two teams going under the national record was impressive,' said Makepeace. 'All four ladies, Bryn, Nesrine, Angelina and Makoa were up to the challenge and got after to meet the right way.' In the 1M Dive, Avery Lommel earned the top spot in the consolation final with 415.75 points to earn ninth place and Second Team All-America honors. Lommel was joined in the event by Kate Robbins, who narrowly missed out on the final round with 359.20 points in prelims. 'We're proud of our divers and their efforts from today and for what's to come in the 3m. They look really sharp right now and think that they'll have a really great performance on Friday.'Jelliti also participated in the 50 free prelims on Wednesday morning, placing 47th with a time of 23.74. She entered the meet with the 53rd ranking but was able to finish six spots ranked 19th nationally by the CSCAA, is in 10th place through six events with 57 remainder of Augustana's schedule at the NCAA Championships is 3-Meter Dive – David Binsfeld400 Medley Relay (Finals only)Friday100 Back – Bryn Greenwaldt100 Breast – Nesrine JellitiWomen's 3-Meter Dive – Avery Lommel, Kate Robbins200 Free Relay (Finals only)Saturday100 Free – Bryn Greenwaldt200 Breast – Nesrine JellitiMen's 1-Meter Dive – David Binsfeld400 Free Relay (Finals only) Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Augustana wrestling rolls past USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AUGUSTANA) — Augustana wrestling lit up the Elmen Center crowd on Thursday night, taking down the University of Sioux Falls Cougars in convincing fashion, 37-6, on Senior Night. The win pushes the Vikings to 9-8 overall and 6-2 in conference action while the Cougars drop to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC. Prior to the start of the dual, seven Viking seniors were honored for their success and contributions to the Augustana wrestling program, with Payton Anderson, Thurman Christensen, Gavin Gulbranson, Kage Lenger, Cade Mueller, Jaxson Rohman and Connor Simmonds all being recognized. No. 3 Jaxson Rohman started the night off strong for the Vikings at 125 pounds, dominating his opponent from start to finish in the first period alone. He stunned with five takedowns and one four-point nearfall to convincingly take the first period 19-4 tech fall in 2:48, putting Augustana on the board first. Alex Mentzer struck next for Augustana and quickly took a 7-0 lead after a strong first period takedown and four-point nearfall. The second period battle remained scoreless but Mentzer hit again in the third with a quick escape and another takedown. A penalty point and an extra point for riding time helped secure the 13-0 major decision at 141 pounds. It was another dominant showing for the Vikings at 149 pounds, where No. 2 Cael Larson took control early with three first period takedowns. He followed that up with another three takedowns and an escape in the second period to end it in 4:36 with a 19-4 tech fall. The momentum continued with Payton Handevidt at 165 pounds, who held the 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. He logged a reversal in the second before getting hot in the third with two takedowns. An extra point for ride timing gave Handevidt the 12-4 major decision, moving Augustana's lead to 18-6. Josh Wagener hit the mat next at 174 pounds and lit up the crowd with his first period performance. Over two minutes had ticked off the clock before any points were scored and it was courtesy of Wagener's takedown, which quickly turned into a pin in 2:17. At 184 pounds, No. 13 Cade Mueller held onto a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. He pressed on the gas and collected two takedowns, one four-point nearfall and one escape in those two minutes before adding in another takedown and an extra point for riding time in the third. Mueller took the 18-1 tech fall in 5:25 to further the AU lead to 29-6. In just the first period of action at 197 pounds, No. 4 Max Ramberg proved exactly why he's tied for first in the national in tech falls this season. He hammered out six takedowns and a four-point nearfall to secure the commanding 22-5 tech fall in just 3:00. The final match of the night again ended in victory of Augustana as Max Balow found hard-fought success in the third period.
